So I know there are several threads about good ol' Facebook including a list of mermaid fan pages, how to's, and warnings about changes in how FB pages are managed.

So here's my dilemma...I am trying to decide whether it's worth it to start a fan page (I realize it's technically free but is it worth more the time and effort). I intend to go around and check out more of y'all's fan pages beyond the few I've visited over time to glean some more info, but I thought I'd post here and see what if any advice comes up.

Here's my situation...I don't need a page to promote a business or sell anything currently with no particular plans to do either. I don't aspire to be a huge public figure although I am starting to be one in my own little town. My mermaiding stuff is currently done at my workplace or just recreationally. My personal FB page has become almost all updates on my mermaid life, which my friends and family seem to love...but I get friend requests from mermaids and people who seem to only befriend mers who may be completely benign but since I don't know them personally I don't necessarily want them on my personal page. That said, I generally like the idea of connecting with other mers on FB.

So the reasons I am considering the page? Connect with other mers without access to my personal page and provide a place for people in my town that are interested in keeping track of what I'm doing. I run my workplace's FB page but don't want to put a bunch of stuff about me on there. Every once in a while is ok, particularly when promoting an event I'll be appearing at, but I think having my own page might be nice.

I'm just unsure about putting myself out there with all the "mervert" issues and FB changes. Also I am not big on self promotion and publicity...it's just not my personality...although the nature of mermaiding at my job has put me there on a local scale (no pun intended there, lol). In other words it's a little out of my comfort zone.

So if anyone has any thoughts or advice I'd appreciate it...or if anyone is having the same dilemma please share!

If for nothing else, to separate your mer-life from every day. :D

Are mentally prepared to deal with the trolls and haters? This is why I don't plan on a mermaid facebook page, and when I finally have a video to post on youtube, I plan on disabling comments. Trolls suck.
