Hello everyone..
First let me say that I knew nothing about the Mer community, or that it even existed, until last weekend, when I met Mermaids Amara and Shelley at the Festival of Legends here in NC. I have been absolutely absorbed by my research into this community this week, reading about monofins, and different kinds of tails, and feeling a little overwhelmed! I am amazed that I didn't somehow find out about it on my own, because I've felt a deep connection to the ocean for my whole life.
I was born in NC, close to the coast, and can't even remember the first time my parents took me to the Outer Banks and showed me the ocean. I grew up spending a week almost every summer on the Outer Banks here, spending day after day swimming in the ocean and going to sleep at night to the sound of the waves. I always had a strong desire to go deeper and deeper into the ocean, especially to go out into the waves whenever I saw pods of dolphins swimming by. When I turned 30 recently, that was what I really wanted for my birthday, so we visited Discovery Cove in Florida. That's another story, but let me just say, that being in the water with a dolphin was everything I wanted it to be and more, an experience I'll remember in vivid detail for the rest of my life.
I have wanted a tail since I was a child, and I begged my mom to make me one. "What do you want that for? You won't be able to walk!" was my mom's reply. Of course, I'm thinking, that's the point isn't it?! I want to SWIM!!
I am planning on ordering a FINIS monofin soon, and am working on gaining access to a pool where I can practice with it several times a week. I cannot wait to get my first tail, and I'm so happy to be a part of MerNetwork to get help and support as I work towards that goal!
