Chinese mermaid movie from Hong Kong. It has English subtitles but they speak Cantonese in the film.

It must be an Asian thing... Her tail looks like the tails in This Love Heart with Rays.

It is the Chinese to English translation. Some of our Chinese words don't do well in English and sometimes make things read more absurd than it really is.
Have you ever seen the Chinese version of Lord of the Rings? Now that is a laugh!

So, I just sped through the whole movie (took like 10 minutes instead of an hour and a half) and it's basically the Splash movie. The only difference is that she doesn't change into a mermaid at the very end when they get her wet. Don't really know how. o.o

I love this movie.
They don't speak Cantonese btw, it's mandarin.

I watched a Cantonese one... This one I just found the link, didn't bother to check!
She didn't change at the end when the water hit her, because she made her final choice, to be with her true love.

what's interesting about this film is that is emphasizes on a certain detail that is very prominent in asian myths, but also is mentioned in western tales now and then; namely, the need for a certain item to be able to dive/stay underwater longer.
In case of asian mermaids and dragons, that is a "magical pearl" which endows its owner with all kind of powers (which is why you often see those images of dragons or other magic creatures obsessing about said pearl/ball).
In the west, the item is more obscure, but the mermaids needed a certain object too to be "seaworthy" and if it was taken away or lost, they would be landbound.
Most obvious is the selkie skin (probably an early and effective version of a neoprene suit the divers in the cold northern waters would sorely need), for more southern divers it was probably a swimming device (fins to strap on, for instance).
Don't ask me why it's shown as a pearl in Asia though :p

Pearls are more valuable. They have been around in Chinese culture for hundreds of years.
It was believed that pearls held magical powers. And the bigger the pearl, the more power it had. Because it came from the sea, people believed it had the power to give life, as it was a gift from the Water God.
So that's why many dragons wanted a big shiny pearl to hold in their claws.
Off topic: I might get a big glass pearl myself, since I'm having no luck finding a local supplier of H2O moonstones.
