View Full Version : Siren's Calling new headdress style

I was going to wait until it was finished, but I figured you all might want to follow progress.
All greenery is hand sewn to the fish netting, and the fish netting us hand sewn to the headband. Shells are being glued down and details being added. Going to order the last thing I need to finish it next week :)
So, until then, here's a little teaser

Couldn't find anything vine like that I actually liked, but I've got a decent option ordered and on the way. Also have something no one else has used, at last not that I've seen, on the way also.
Hopefully I'll have this fished before the end of the month so I can debute it at my event coming up at the end of the month.

Thought I'd share a larger sneak peek of on of the new headdress styles. Been working really hard on it and want to share progress. Have a photo shoot planned next month for the first 2 styles.

So excited! I finished the headdress today! Can't wait to share it with everyone. BUT, have to wait until next month.
I've got a photo shoot at the end of the month with Blue Wolf Photography for this headdress, and possibly 2-3 others depending on how fast I can work :D and I'm not sharing photos of it until after the shoot

(Photo heavy post)
Sad to say that due to weather, we weren't able to do the photo shoot. BUT, on the up side, I'm turning this into a new product announcement thread as I've been working on many new products (Including a new unique gender neutral piece that I'm sure the guys will LOVE).
And, since the photo shoot is a no go, I've decided to share studio photos of the new larger headdress style that will be available by the end of summer after a few tweaks.
From the front, it looks like my usual headdresses.

But, get to the sides and back, and the magic happens. All greenery is hand sewn onto the fish netting, and the fish netting is hand sewn to the headband.
22004
And another unique aspect- Attached to the inside of the headband are several hair combs hand sewn on for strength. These lock into the hair and firmly hold the headdress to prevent slipping.

Apologies for the overly large photos, thought I had shrank them smaller than that -.-'

This is beautiful. I absolutely love all the greenery in the back and the choice of shells is lovely~

I came here from the other thread and I'm so happy to see all the extra pictures. I love the netting and all the green. The hair comb idea is genius. I might have to bug you for a commission after I get my tail together...

Hehe. Thanks! I have a hard time keeping stuff in my hair while swimming. The comb works great!

Woohoo. Finally got stated on the straps for a new piece made specifically for mermen, but can be worn by mermaids. Super excited to got this piece done. I know the guys are going to love it

Mermen and mermaids, I present or first truly gender neutral piece. Currently just progress pictures but it's nearing completion! (Note-no that is NOT real leather. It is faux leather, so it's perfectly safe to wear in the water)

Would love some feedback from some of the guys on this piece. It was mainly designed with them in mind, it's only classed as gender neutral cause some women I've showed it to said they would wear it also

Is that a real shell? I like it...Kind of military/warrior-looking
Morticia Mermaid
07-03-2014, 03:45 PM
Yep, it's a real shell. I'm working on finding bigger shells to use add well, and also working on making some with shell pairs on each shoulder to make them larger (so it would be 2 of the one currently used on each shoulder)

Ok, is there something particular you don't like about it, or just the whole thing?
Pictures of the double shell (had to have someone hold it so I could get pictures, couldn't get them to stay)-

For now, the whole thing.
If it's just the double shells on both shoulders, I will be honest, it's gonna look plain and unfinished to me. There is potential though.

Thanks for the feedback :)
It is still currently a work in progress, and there is a lot of room for improvements. Currently playing with ideas of adding a bit of greenery and smaller shells to make it look more like a solid piece. Nearly all the straps will be adjustable, with buckles in the front for ease of wear.

I really like the idea of it, but I personally wouldn't purchase it since it wouldn't be fitting for my mersona. Seriously though, it looks very neat. :)

My pirate mermaid costume would love something like that added to it. It has a very battle ready, warrior-mer feel to it but it does also have a slight 'there's something missing' kind of feel to it too. Hrmmm, maybe netting and stinger barbs or something spikey! LOL :p Now I suddenly have an urge to watch Mad Max!

:) I've got a couple idea I'm going to try (need to see about ordering another set of shells as I've only got the one currently). Going to do the double on each shoulder and add some things. I'll post progress pictures as I go. Would love more feedback as progress continues :)

The shoulder-piece looks awesome, and something similar would totally work for my mersona! A friend of mine offered to trade me a custom pair of finned leather bracers in exchange for a pair of costume boots and a unicorn tail I'm selling (though I don't think the leather is going to be water-safe unless I can find some way to waterproof it) and a shoulder piece like this could be awesome as an armory thing. :D

I like the idea, but a concern I have is comfort...with as articulated as the shoulder is, those hard shells just look like they are going to hurt moving around, especially swimming motions. I think you might consider making a mold and casting the shells in silicone, but something a bit harder than dragonskin.

I thought so too at the start but, I was able to do a test try on with it- The way I have the shells attached together allows for flex between the 2 and the way they are attached to the straps actually allows for a surprising amount of movement. I've also got being stretched across the inside for a short of "cushion" to prevent the shells from reading directly on the shoulder

Progress on the shoulder piece. Got the harness put together and the main shells attached. Time to decorate!

This piece has definitely been a learning experience. I am taking it for test wear to my event this weekend, as well as going to get feedback during the event. Once this piece is finished, it already has a permanent home to go to with a tail order I am currently working on :)

Wow! So, I'm really happy to report that the pirates this weekend LOVED this! I kept getting stopped by people asking to look at it and touch it, and asking me about it. It was such an awesome experience. I may have to try to find more events for me to do test runs of prototypes at! Going to search through facebook pages and websites (there were a LOT of photographers there this weekend and they all ran out of business cards :headwall: ) to see if I can find pictures, even if they are random shots.
Excited to get this one finished and sent to its permanent home :)

Have you ever thought of incorporating shark teeth down the straps? I feel like that would make it much more warriory.

How many and what size shark teeth are you looking for? I have a small stock of teeth that I collected myself from Peace River when I went there for a trip. I might be able to send you some, but I have very few larger than the size of nail on my ring finger. :3
Morticia Mermaid
08-12-2014, 03:47 PM
Thanks Saoirse. Those would be a bit too small. I may have to knuckle down and see about scrounging done money to order some. Would love to get some ranging in size between 1/2" to 1 1/2".
I'll definitely order some for my next one. Had an idea just pop up to edge the shells with them with the teeth perpendicular to the shell so they stick out. I think it would look really awesome if I could find the right shells

Yeah I don't have any really that big. Sorry. ^.^' Good luck though! Shark teeth are a great addition and I've found that with e6000 they're pretty much impossible to take off!
Can't wait to see your next projects. :)

Thanks. I'm trying to find my polished abalone set I have somewhere. I originally got them for a top but it didn't work out, they would be perfect for another shoulder piece. And I wouldn't have to add much as the marbling on them is amazing :)
