I know there's a few larpers, cosplayers here.
What else do you guys do part from being a mer?
I myself dress like a pirate for a charity, I'm also making Visas Marr for 501st Legion. I also do medieval reenacment and getting into WW2. I'm also into steampunk. I like dressing like a fairy too :D

I have done some cosplay myself, but heck any excuse to dress up I will take. I posted in another post some of my costumes:
http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?7901-The-Pains-of-Being-a-Not-So-Little-Mermaid&p=124570&viewfull=1#post124570
After the wall of text, you can see three of my other costumes, though the unicorn one is too big now and I do not wear it anymore. The head of the unicorn was cumbersome and would hurt my neck (even with added supports connecting to other parts of the costume) if worn for more than 2 hours.

Pretty much the same, cosplay, LARP, occasional medieval when I have the time. few starwars characters XP, yes I prefer to keep that separate as well..cause it's Starwars, no explanation needed (for me anyway :P)

I own a plethora of gothic/medieval garb, which I usually wear when performing on my harp.
I used to dance in some of my fairy costumes, and I've used bellydance props (wings + veils) for other dance styles (combining tails with wings and doing merdance is s much fun).
I also love to wear hanfu and qipao (traditional chinese clothing) of which I have far too many.

{Disney's Merida}
20833
{Not sure anyone will know this one, Suiseiseki from Rozen Maiden}
20830
I recently did Ariel, just to name a few :)
I also loved to attend the annual KMVR Celtic Festival (great way to celebrate my scottish heritage), although I'm so sad I can't anymore due to the timing and now living away from Cali :( (I was one of the mermaids there).
20828 20829
My boyfriend is also a furry, struggling to make or buy his first suit :)
I was interested in furries last year, but it was a phase that never really grew into much. I really want to make a fur suit though just for the fun of it :)
I would also cosplay like crazy if I had the money. I'm great at sewing and I love making my own costumes. My friend and I are going to an amine con this summer and as much as we wanted to work on cool elaborate cosplays, I'm putting all my spending money towards the tail I'm making.

Whoo, these are great guys! Love how varied your costumes are! Ah, I knew there had to be others interested in costumes besides mers. I'm working on a faerie (fairy/faery) costume now, though want to do another mermaid, dragon & other fantastical half-humans. Used to go to some conventions, and I always loved the gorgeous, handmade costumes. Lots of different fantasy types, and medieval costumes.. so lovely.

I've had the opposite experience. I find the mermaid community the most welcoming I've ever seen (incredibly so--it's so pleasant & nice here) but I feel like the majority of furries aren't very welcoming. There are bad apples everywhere of course, but rude furries to me seem to be more at large.
For me, I'm currently working on a dinosaur costume (link in my signature). I'd love to do more complicated and harder costumes and intend to but this current raptor project has worn me out big time.
I've been looking at Clockwork Creatures and Beetlecat as inspiration for my fursuit. Completely way above dreams though!
I'm off to a fairy festival in June and need to get going on doing my fairy clothing, I'm gonna love dressing like a fairy :D

Casual cosplayer, and I usually go to the local sci-fi con as my personal character, a faun:
20844
I was a furry for about a decade, got the hell out of there about about two years ago and never looked back. There are some great people, but compared to other fandoms, there's some awful shit that goes down in there and I just couldn't handle being a part of it and being associated with it anymore. Doesn't help that my ex-fiancé, who got me into the fandom in the first place, was a goddamn abusive psychopath.
Never owned my own fursuit, but I did borrow a friend of mine's at the sci-fi con a few years back:
20845
I'm really hoping to get into LARPing eventually, but unfortunately there aren't any groups like that around here. :c

I never was able to settle on one furry species, though I appreciate the aesthetic. I do go to conventions (Wizard World Philadelphia and Faeriecon), and last Halloween I made a pretty awesome Jack Frost costume. A friend also has a mythical creatures costume party every year on the summer solstice (where the rule is guests must come as something that doesn't exist, from dragons to sober frat boys) where I have gone as a peanut butter and jellyfish and as a Fairy Godfather (who was there to make Cinderella an offer she couldn't refuse). Still trying to decide what to go as this year.

I have three kimono, a bit of anime stuff, mainly Bleach, and now working on a Shingeki No Kyojin Sasha outfit, which is something of a joke in my circle of cosplay friends, mainly because according to family legend, my last name means potato starch. I also have a rather colorful piratey Assassin outfit I put together over the span of a year, and love it to death. It's my go-to renfest outfit along with being the outfit people know me by at the conventions I go to. I am the "blue assassin girl". I also have an outfit nearly identical to the outfit the fallen angel Anna in supernatural wears, which again, is a running joke because I'm a readhead and my name is Anna.

When I'm not a mermaid I'm contracted out by a local party business, so I get to be Disney Princesses a lot :) I also cosplay and sew- I've made a few medieval dresses for events, and I'm sewing my first corset currently! I dabbled in kimono and I used to wear lolita and gyaru styles from Japan; but my costumes and mermaid life took over so I dont do either anymore. lol! I found them quite alright, besides getting warm due to being packed inside and the latex stuck to my head XP. I made mine so they're hollow latex but filled with the beanbag balls and stuffing, they could bend around my neck if i wished but they creased and looked funny to me >_<.
What were yours stuffed with?
Stuffing from things like teddy bears, packed quite tightly. My friend made the pair I have now but I may try and make my own pair.
Ilyena
09-07-2014, 08:03 PM
If they're made from latex perhaps taking some of the stuffing from down lower? and making it not as tightly packed, from what I found the only place which should be tight is near the top (scalp). Latex holds its shape quite well, well anything does really even lightly stuffed. I think the hardest part of making them was the colouring lol, latex dries a different colour than it looks
It streaked when my friend made it, although we only had a couple of days to make my lekku for the con. Hopefully when I make my own pair I have enough time to do it proper.
I'm hoping to do a tortuga one day.

I used to do drama club at school and a bit of larping in my late teens and early twenties, but I found that neither was really right for me.
Drama club seemed like fun at first, but far too often it degenerated either into a duel of clashing egos or just a coffee-drinking club. For example, there was this one kid who far into the rehersals started changing his lines just because he didn't like his character. I told him that its too late for that and then he he didn't want to be in the play at all! It was just too much of the wrong kind of drama. So eventually I picked up larp instead.
Initially, when I started larping I was happy to take breaks from my real life which was miserable at the time. But as the years passed, I was enjoying larp less and worried more and more that my role performances weren't living up to the expectations of the other participants. I also briefly hung out with a group of history larpers, but ultimately left that group because of safety concerns (the group has a tendency to gravitate toward a certain smallish cliff in the woods. It 's pictoresque and away from the gawking of joggers, dog-walkers and other passerbys but given how clumsy and uncoordinated I can be, it's also a potentially dangerous place... at least for me). So I lost interest in larping as well.
Mermaiding has thus far been a much better match for me. There's just more individual freedom in it and I can conviniently combine so many of my other interests (swimming, costuming, environmental issues etc.)

It's nice to know some fellow mers cosplay wow :)
I love to cosplay myself have been for about 8 years now just a nice fun thing to do on the side to break from reality
Heres a couple of my cosplays:

Awesome costumes guys!
I'm planning on having a few Star Trek uniforms, I'm also learning how to do prosthetic makeup so may try other races. Vulcan is a must, and thinking of some others. Argonian I love as I somehow go well as blue :D
Ok, now I'm trying to figure out "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" fursuits. Of course the ONLY kind of fursuit I'm vaguely interested in has to be one with practically no resources online... I can find plenty of tutorials for making the head, but they're all irrelevant since I'm planning on buying a head base from Atalon. I'm trying to figure out how best to do these hooves, specifically the hands. My biggest issue is that I pretty much refuse to use foam, for many reasons (mostly my allergies), so I'm planning on creating all the padding with custom removable "pillows" I'll be making.
I've even figured out how I'm doing the legs, but the finishing/enclosing of the bottom of the hoof is also stumping me.

Miyu , Are you on furaffinity forums? You could ask there how to build without foam there , you'll probably find more help than here :)

I am not. I hadn't thought to join, since my interest in fursuiting is extremely narrow, I've just been surfing the net trying to see what others have written on the subject. I may have to go make an account simply to ask questions about pony stuff... Oh geez they're going to love that, LOL! :p

Lol I don't think they'd mind :)

Have you looked at Draenei from World of Warcraft as well as larp satyrs? I've been looking and they've also got some good tips on making hooves.
Hmm, well I suppose I'll join and try not to be the obnoxious pony fan in the furry forums ;)
LOL no, I hadn't really thought of any WOW characters, I'm rather unfamiliar with the game's details :p Satyr hooves seem to be quite a bit on the small side for what I'm going for.
I've been looking at what horse hoof tutorials I can find, and they're helping some with the legs, but the problem I'm running into is the specific shape of the hooves in the Friendship is Magic series - it's huge, flared legs (pretty much like legwarmers). Most "regular" fursuit hooves make use of the regular shape of the bottom of the shoe, but these hooves are practically a whole circle around my foot. I'm wondering if I need to cut a piece of plastic out and bolt some shoes to that, then build the stuffing/fur combo around that? I was trying to avoid that because it hinders the flexibility of my shoe and prevents me from "feeling" the ground.
Hmm... I may go try and pester Atalon some more, and see if they can lend me any insight.

@ Miyu: you could also try the fursuiting livejournal. The memories and archives there have info on pretty much everything fursuit related ever.

Thank you for the link Ed :) I think I've come across a few of the threads on there in my searches. It seems that the MLP fursuiters are a rather small community, because a lot of other fursuiters/furries really seem to have something against them?

I've been wanting to make a leather "Petes" mask myself... because I have too much random leather and it's all worn and would make a nice "wood" mask :p
What's everyone's cosplay plans this year?
I know I'm planning on a jawa to finally join the 501st Legion and I'm looking at a Sith Pureblood from The Old Republic. Maybe some WoW costumes. Looking at doing a Stargate uniform.

First I'm planning on repairing some of my older outfits, like my Sailor Mars (bodysuit and skirt) , Eternal Sailor Moon (yellow skirt, hairclips and wings), Belle's golden dress (top of the dress) and my Xena-outfit (armor). The I still need to make 2 different kinds of shiny Gardevoir-dresses for my boyfriend. And after that I'm still want to my Sugar (from Tiny Snowfairy Sugar) and 1 special Disney-prinssess ballgown. One of the first new outfits for this year is already done: ice-queen Elsa ;)

I'm hopefully heading to Japan, so I'm just doing two costumes. Edea from Final Fantasy 8, and Dr. Nora Barlow from the Leviathan series which will get all the I want to make a victorian dress out of my system. lol

Another furry here. I've made several fursuits over the years.

My usual suit is Rhamphy, a pterosaur.
I've also made a few others, like this guy.

Besides fursuiting, I am also sometimes a robot.

My first cosplay was a horse satyr (sileni I think is the real term for that) OC I did for Renaissance faire. It was very hard to walk more than a few feet without someone rushing up wanting to take my picture. Also I was nearly 7ft tall in the whole get up and was EXTREMELY HOT with my lower body covered in fur in august heat. Totally worth it though :D . Me and some friends are working on a group starfox costume in the fall. I was going to go as Falco and set it up so it can easily be converted to Mordecai from Regular show. Any who here are two photos of my satyr costume.

Man, impressive silenus costume, jvry8c!
As for my plans, I'm uncertain... I'd love to go to Faeriecon East this year, and I'd also like to go to both Merfest events, but not sure I'll have enough funds for all of them. If I did go to Faeriecon, I'd probably wear my Jack Frost costume and maybe my Faerie Godfather outfit during the day, and I'd like to make a selkie costume for the good faeries ball and a ganconer one for the bad faeries ball. I have also been wanting to make a sphinx (combination Greek and Egyptian), a King Ghidorah (the three-headed dragon from Godzilla movies), a tenth, a hydra, a chimera, a kraken, and an archangel (from the X-men) costume.

:D thank you. Alot of the credit needs to go to Melissa Weber who did 80% of the legs. I only extended the white part (was a tad short when I got it) to make look more like the legs of a Clydesdale or Gypsy horse. They were built around pajama pants with foam glued on to give it the digitigrade look.
I make costumes. Just randomly.
Same here. Because WHY THE HECK NOT
I've been known my entire life for cutting up clothes and turning them into fashion designs and costumes. I used to get in trouble for cutting up clothes, LOL... Now it's accepted that I am crazy with the scissors
