Hey guys,
I'm a swim teacher and mermaid. One of my swim students suggested I host a MerFolk Camp for those just getting started in mermaiding. This joke of an idea took root, and MerFolk Camp was born!
Most of my "campers" will be purchasing their very first tail so to participate in camp. We will have a morning session for adults and an afternoon session for campers age 5-15. (The adult session threatens to sell out before the kids, FYI.)
As details and logistics are nailed down, I am taking advice on what should be included in MerFolk camp. Remember: these are for swimmers who are just starting out as Mermaids/Mermen.
Things I've already put into the works:
A Tail sponsor so my campers can have their tails in hand before camp begins (taking offers now from all you tail makers!) Tails are not required but HIGHLY recommended.
A certified lifeguard hired just for MerFolk Camp will be watching the pool/lake at all times.
A swim test will be administered prior to camp beginning. Campers MUST be able to swim 100 yards continuously using either front stroke, breast stroke, or butterfly.
Our default location will be my apartment swimming pool (which does have a 20 yard 8ft deep deep-end.) I am working on finding a larger area, such as a nearby lake or large public pool.
Class size, due to space and safety, will be 10. (10 adults, 10 kids.)
We will have a "recital" of skills learned on the final day, hopefully at a local aquarium or infinity pool that allows for a side view rather than an above ground-down view.
Class topics will include- tail maintenance, mermaid safety, and basic skills such as swim strokes, flips, twists, turns, and bubble shapes. (Please feel free to add on- what do you wish you had known when you first started out?!)
So, if you have suggestions, guidelines, or your own experience to offer, please feel free to comment below, send me a private message, or email me. Thanks!
