Hey Everyone :)

I go by the name of Sia because it sounds a lot more mermaid-like than my actual name and it's a character in my very own story which is published on a website called Wattpad. I currently live in Edinburgh, Scotland but I grew up on the sunny Island that is Cyprus (although I am actually Scottish, not Cypriot). I would love to move back somewhere with warmer waters so I can finally go swimming in the sea without freezing off my behind.

For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with mermaids and I always wanted to be one, even after I passed the age where it is deemed 'acceptable' to have such ambitions. I used to dream about moving to Florida and performing as a mermaid entertainer as my family pushed me to use my brains for the greater good of modern science, hence why I am now in university for the biological sciences. Recently though, as hard as I tried to stop myself, the dreams came back and I decided to throw caution to the wind and chase after it. I figured I wouldn't be happy if I didn't at least try, right? (Life story here, first time I've admitted this to anyone, let alone the internet haha!)

So, that's my story I guess. I'm currently looking into buying a tail from Merbellas Inc. because they are just so gorgeous! Seriously, I wish I could do that with my own two hands but I would probably make something resembling flubber and not a tail. Anyway, I would love to hear from people in my area who share this unique ambition because what is a mermaid without a pod? ;)

Happy Splashing!
Sia

Welcome! It's nice to see more Scottish mermaids popping up!

Thanks!

Yeah I know. It seems weird that people from so far north would do something like this but I thought to myself, why should location get in the way of an ambition? I'm really glad that there are others from Scotland! The relief... haha!

Nearly my whole family (Girls mainly) are mers now, so we're all pretty much a pod.:swoon: So, Sia, have you done any swimming in a tail or monofin yet? Going straight into silicone tails would be a huge step. :)

Well I've pretty much been a water baby my entire life. I used to freak out the local lifeguards my jumping into the deep-end of the pool when I was still just a toddler, with no armbands! I haven't trained in a monofin yet, but I was thinking about getting a tail from magictail.de to practice in until a space opens up for my silicone/neoprene order from Raven of Merbella Studios. :)

I just recently got my monofin and I can't wait to go for a swim:)

A good idea! I was rather shocked on the weight difference between my latex and my fabric at first. Finding pools to allow you to swim in Scotland can be bothersome, monofins seem to be okay to use in lanes but if you got the full tail on you may get into a lot of trouble and then get the ever ending list of reasons from the pool not to be used. Poor Selkie got that the first time she went to try on her tail she had made a wee while ago. :(

Well I'm on florida just now so I might be able to find a pool :)

Well they shouldn't have a problem if you say it is for a business and your very experienced? I don't know what it will be like in Edinburgh. Hopefully I can blag my way into the Commonwealth Pool or something...

Welcome, Sia! I'm a cold water mermaid, too, here in the Minneapolis-St.Paul area. Special challenges, eh?

I hope some of you Scottish mermaids go swimming in Loch Ness sometime. Just to freak out the tourists.

Oh my god Galene... you just gave me an idea! Thanks and hello :)

It's been on the news here (Yes, the news!) That 'nessie' has gone missing. Maybe we should get some press back to Loch Ness!

Nessie missing! Oh, no! I have been to Loch Ness once, and though I didn't have the pleasure of viewing everyone's favorite aquatic dinosaur, the mood of the place made an impression!

*now has an urge to swim in Loch Ness in a scaly black snake tail*

welcome Sia!
I hope you find ample opportunity to swim (consider making a neoprene "tailsuit" to stay warm maybe?).

so many gorgeous places to swim, and all cold as heck :(

Hi Caltuna and Melanie,

Yeah Scotland is very scenic and beautiful, it's a shame it's cold enough to freeze you to death though! Hopefully it will be a summer like last year, because then i'll have no problem jumping into a lake or the sea. Melanie, it would be great if you did a workshop over here :) I would definitely go to it, it's been something I've wanted to do for a while haha

Welcome to the forum, Sia! :) Here in Finland we also know everything about freezing our butts off. (Considering buying a wetsuit for thermal insulation).

I'm also a biology student (currently trying to finish my master's thesis on lake plankton.... but it's a sloooooow process. There are days when I really envy the subject of my own thesis. Darn plankton, gets to bob up and down in the water all day while I'm stuck inside, in front of a computer. ).

Ah, Cyprus. I was there last summer. Great beaches, friendly people. Awesome place. :)

Hi Lucinda :) I did a full report on the dry matter and desiccation (what?!) of seaweed and by the end of it I was dying. No-one needs to research that much about the most abundant species of alga (my report was on brown seaweed). I'm going back to Cyprus in a few weeks for a well deserved holiday with my friends. Cannot wait to see the sun! :)

Ah, yes. There's nothing like a little dried up seaweed. ;)

Welcome to the community! I am an American Mermaid but my mother was born in Edinburgh and I have a lot of family in Scotland. My grandmother is a tartan hand weaver here in the states and as a family we try to stay connected to our roots back across the pond. Scotland is such a beautiful place (although harsh at times) and the legends of sea people are deep and beautiful. I can't wait to hear about your journey!
