hello everyone,
so idk how to really start this post off
for a long time sense i was a young child ive always had he fasination of being a professional mermaid model
currently im 16 years old and ive realized that i really do want to make this a reality
not sure if its the anxiety of trying to find photographers or trying to find the confidence to feel alright with promoting myself
i dont know where to start and i know im supoosed to just go with the flow and practice practice and PRACTICE
but thats what ive done for years sense the age of 7

my worries are:
the expenses of finding underwater photographers and filmers
as of currently ive been able to use a waterproof camera but sticking with a pool and having someone with no experiance and a shaking hand try to film me is rather impossible, and that goes the same with photographs too

another worry is people wont take me seriously or find me too unprofessional, as of currently i only have a fabric tail, its going to be over a month possibly untill i get my first silicone neoprene tail, but sometimes i still feel like im not gonna look flashy enough to be an interesting mermaid

any tips to someone young and new ?

In Australia, you need a police check and a working with children check done. It's to make sure you don't have a criminal history and are not a pedophile.

I'm sure we're all nice mermaids and mermen, we don't do nasty things to kids. It is a way to keep the kids safe from harm and predators.

You fill out a bunch of forms, the police do the checking, if you pass they give you a number that people/organisations can ask the police about if they have doubts about you. It is a regulation they have here, if you don't have it done, you can't work with children.
You can be imprisoned if you are found working with kids and you haven't or don't have your set of receipt numbers that the police give you.

Do you have something like it in the USA or other countries?

Nothing like that in the US. But if someone is convicted as a sex offender it's public record, and I believe they have to register every time they move, so anyone who checks their area will see that person listed, as well as anyone else who is a register offender.

as a mermaid model, you normally don't work with children.

depending on whether you're hired by an agency or just working freelance, you get "normal" model jobs & shootings, some of which will take place costumed and in/under water.

there are of course other opportunities to work as a mermaid model, but paying model jobs rarely involve children unless it's for a commercial or something.

I've done a write up specifically about photography:

And finally, if you *are* thinking of working with children, most countries (including US) require at least criminal background checks on file (most jobs require that actually) which can be obtained from www.mybackcheck.com (http://www.mybackcheck.com) and many places require a child abuse background check which is often done through it's own government agency. In the US it goes by state (here's an example: http://www.dfps.state.tx.us/child_care/other_child_care_information/abuse_registry.asp )

Most places requests you just have one done within a year of your booking, and usually only high profile/paying gigs qigs will specifically ask for these two things, but the assumption is often made that you have them on file. Just good to have for a year. All our mermaids do.

I also am running a workshop specifically on working with kids and it's hosted online you can check out here: https://www.facebook.com/events/237936396403941/?ref=22

You couldn't have a best answer if not from Raina!

Anyway try to do what I did, in my city there is an high school where lots of people learn how to film and take photos professionally, for them is quite hard to get out and start their own job because they don't have experience so in this way you can find a professional hand for pics and videos and also many friends.
If you can try in this way ;)
