I was thinking about this and I think it would be super cool if everyone on Mernetwork had a universal phrase and an answer so if we see someone and we think they might know Mernetwork and about our community we can say something without completely embarrassing ourselves.

What do you think?

Cute idea, but I think that mermaids are so far and few between that it wouldn't really work out. Plus the member map lets you know who lives near you.

How about:
"hey, do you know Mernetwork?"

any non-mer will only hear "network" and think it's some FB like stuff anyway.

I just usually ask if they're on MerNetwork :)

It would be fun, but I doubt it would ever catch on. Just mentioning Mernetwork would do the trick.

I would say, mernetwork as a question. Like, "mernetwork?" But then again, I haven't met any other mers where I live or future ones.

There's also the chance whatever mer you meet hasn't been on this site, so they have no idea of the codewords or Mernetwork. At least, it happens like that in furry fandom. :P

I think mernetwork is the key word! lol but I think we have lots of universal words like mertender, merwrangler, pod, merfin etc

Coelacanth. The password should be coelacanth. There should also be a secret handshake involving slapping each others' hands together with all the fingers together, like a fin slap.

Bonus points for rendezvousing in dark alleys behind tropical fish stores.

There is always mermish (http://cynthiamermaid.blogspot.com/2012/01/mermish-101.html) to consider, as detailed in The Secret World of Mermaids (http://www.amazon.com/Secret-World-Mermaids-Francine-Rose/dp/1592233686). :)

I have that book! I haven't even removed the figurines yet. Every year I get a new book like this. My latest one was the gorgeous pop up story of the original Little Mermaid (http://www.amazon.com/The-Little-Mermaid-Pop-Up-Classics/dp/1416960805) story.

I love the idea of a merfolk language. But I'd probably never actually use it.

I'd love if we developed our own language to use ^.^ When my friends and I do DnD cosplay events for game stores we use elvan language from lord of the rings (yes it was a rather long and hard language to learn). Kids love it and it's always funw hen some one else chimes in ^.^

We could also have some vague thing we wear that would give us away to other mers (aside from tails). For example, some asexuals wear a black ring on their middle finger. I used to do this, and have asked a couple people I have ran across irl if they were asexual, but they were totally lost when I asked about that black ring on their finger. Not the best option, but a cute idea like the codewords.

I would wear seaweed in my hair or something obvious that signals a connection to the sea.

I like the mermetwork pin but you wouldn't have it on you all the time.

A Mernetwork pendant would be nice. I almost always wear necklaces :) And they could be made in different colors to match your colors

I was thinking more like a button. You can put it on a bag or your hat. But I think a braclet would do the trick

A button or a pin would be best for me. I rarely wear jewelry.

Or tumblr has this code its "I like your shoelaces" and the responds is " thanks I stole them from the president" I had used this code so as long as we do something casual and not random persay then were fine
