I posted this somewhere else on the forum, but I had my first (worksafe) mermaid photoshoot recently (hooray) and am quite pleased with the results. I'm already eager to upgrade my tail though (I have about half of the supplies I need to make a latex one). My previous mermaid shots were with Alberich, and are too naked to use for my mer website. ;p

There is definitely a time & a place for everything. I like arty nudity but I find that I am often in the minority. <:D

I love being nude I think I must be a naturist or nudist or something. lol I have done a LOT of nude modelling. I did one mermaid topless shoot before I was a performer- I really like the shots and I think they look more natural- but the photographer edited scales over my boobs so I could still show them on my Raina page. But I do 1-3 big Nude shoots a year with famous fine art nude photographers. Im very proud of my work, and before anyone asks, yes Im allowed to do it and be a teacher :) I just can't walk into a grade 2 classroom and announce "Im a nude model!" haha. But I sat down with the union and made sure I would be okay :)

U know i always wanted to do a few nude shots but i havent brought myself to..lol I want to find a photographer im comfortable with, I guess ever since i had that lung surgery and have those scars on my back and side ive been alittle self consious. Oo nice photos! Out of curiosity, I've been wanting to model for a while (photographer dad...look at the effects :D) so would joining MM be a good place to start? I'm avoiding agencies at the moment, because of my dance conflicts.

I only allow nudity on my shoots is if you're in a tail, over 21, and paying me. I do stagework for various high school theatres, and have to undergo background checks, so I rather not shoot nude work. Also I don't want to be the Government's unpaid secretary for the 2257 forms.

They're really neat done with old med/large format film. I think they look kinda retro and they actually make my tail look more realistic because without the colours you cant see the imprefections

The top I am wearing was one I made when I had my practice tail. I rarely wear it. It's too heavy and doesn't stay up!

Thank you!!! Well I always dye it turquoise but it changes a lot, I'm never really sure what color to call it anymore. Sometimes it's really blue, then it's green then it's teal... I think it's mostly teal right now ^_^ Yeah I've been dying my hair for a couple years now, though I only stared doing all my hair about a year ago.

Another photo from my shoot with Mark Anthony Ramsay this fall. I dont normally like images where my tail is flipped down, but I like this one above because it looks like a heart.

None of the photos have any photoshop which is something im really proud of. The two images Mark edited do have their levels adjusted etc, but no air brushing or anything like that. We just had a great light outside and I worked my fish butt off on the makeup.

Fun little out take above. The neoprene my tail is made out of isnt the best quality. When I sent it to Raven she took it in to fit me better, but in that year it's STILL stretching. it'll never stop! Just stretch until it rips which is what it's doing in some places

Also, that rock looks like a really great place for posing. Was the water deep enough to jump in from where you were sitting?

He's an amateur photographer, but he does a great job! He has the ability to make me look less-monstrous-than-usual, which is quite an achievement really. Neither Aradia or I felt game to dive off the rock - the water was a bit shallow and it was quite an ordeal getting up there in the first place!

Hehehe, he isn't a professional photographer although perhaps I can encourage him to be one.. The pictures were just taken with my point and shoot Fuji camera in a waterproof case (we lost part of the photos from the case fogging up grrr) and he just played around with vibrancy in Photoshop.
We were REALLY lucky to get such a beautiful day (after I thought it looked cold and rainy at home) otherwise the pictures aren't really modded at all so I don't know what Nerissa is talking about :p
Also for the record the water was shin deep and the rock was high enough/surrounded by little rocks so we couldn't jump in without serious injury.

It's the new one. :D I haven't trimmed the top edges yet to the shape I want and I'm considering painting a fade in but I had to do the shoot very quickly for promotional purposes for a show in March. :p

Iv been modeling since 2008, I started with cosplay and then began trying swimsuit and alternative modeling. Now I do it as a regular hobbie thanks to all the photographers iv met over the years. Next month I have my first underwater shoot, no tail though. I did find a sponsor to fund me to make my mermaid tail so it should be done for summer <3

It depends on what area of modeling you want to go for. Alternative modeling is becoming increasingly popular and the models range from curvy, short, tall, thin, it doesent matter as long as you know how to work it.
High fashion runway modeling is the type with high demands for taller, thinner models and even they are making allot of changes.
Im not that tall either, im 5'6.
You should look for local photographers who are looking for models to do projects, they usually do shoots for free or for moderate prices. You can find them at art schools and institutes and most are students anyways.

XD yush i am, my dad would throw m into the water when i was 2! And i grew up in a sailboat, so i was always in the water.

Mermaid loreli, its a pain cuz you have to try to stay still for 5-10 secs without floating upwards, having hair in your face, and not letting any bubbles out of your nose! There are so many things you have to think of when doing it that its a challenge, but its fun nevertheless! I had so many photos of my butt floating upwards LOL

Haha I wish I knew how to model. I get so awkward and stiff in front of the camera. I'm not used to having attention on me I guess.
And I don't want it to look like I'm just making a Derek Zoolander face or glaring/zoning out at the photographer.
I needed a headshot done a while back for a pageant and I couldn't get in my comfort zone even when the photographer was a close friend.
Kept on feeling like he was judging me, or that I was wasting his time. >.>

Any chance of a "modelling tips" thread specifically for mermaiding?

Anyway: I think it depends if you are hiring the photographer to do your own shoot or if the photographer is looking for a models (their shoot). Usually you can tell the difference because if you are hiring the photographer they normally don't put their name/logo on the print (unless it's like someone starting out or something or just isn't professional). If they are hiring you then they do, if it's going to be in their portfolio or something. That's how someone I know who photographs professionally explained it to me.

I don't think you need an agent, unless you need someone to scout out jobs for you - that's what they do, right?
I have no idea though - so you can disregard my post since I'm just making up as answers as I go lol.

What I would personally try to do is to hire a photographer you can really get along with for your very first shoot - explain the situation before hiring them, have them teach you some of the ropes (what photographers expect, lighting, your best angles/features to emphasize, how to come up with poses, etc) and let you work out problems you come across. Then you have some shots that demonstrate your ability as well as some insight on how the "industry" works. And then you can advertise! Wheeee.

I've almost got my MM profile completed. I'm doing a shoot Monday and I'll be using those photos for both my MM application as well as for my Suicide Girls application.

For those new to modeling:

First thing you need to do is get a friend to take a few good photos of you with their cellphone or digital camera
with those photos seek photographers in your area (its best to search online) and ask them if they are interested in doing an exchange, pics for pics. Many photographers who are beginers work this way and will do shoots for free. DONT go to a professional photographer at a studio, they charge waaaay too much and some can be very cocky.

If you need help on poses:

At agencies they do give modeling classes for beginers or just look up modeling classes in your area, some can be very expensive so if you cant find any, then learn from youtube!
practice your faces and poses in the mirror, look for your good and bad sides.

If you want to go pro its a MUST to have an agency, freelancing models like me dont get very far unless they have connections. Im struggling right now as a model because im not part of an agency and many poeple wont hire you just because of that, which i find really stupid.
