Hi everyone,
While I'm a complete novice when it comes to mermaiding, I'm certainly no stranger to mermaid art. Ever since I was a kid I was captivated by mythical, fantasy and alien creatures. About a few years back I did a few mermaid pics, and then I began to realize that merfolk were more fun to depict than most creatures and that there are thousands of different ways merpeople can look.
Now, a lot of my pieces are photo manipulations but based upon my own photos. For some pictures I have utilized a 3D program called Poser 3 and its human and animal models. Some are hand drawings and paintings that I have improved digitally, while others I have left without enhancements. Some images represent so-called 'traditional' merfolk while others kinda fall into the 'alternative' category.
Now, there is one thing I would like people to take into consideration: Please do not repost these images elsewhere (outside this thread). If you would like to do so, then please send me a request via the messaging system. (It's OK to duplicate my images within this thread if you use "reply with quote".)
But if you have any thoughts, questions, comments about my art then please don't hesitate to post them here. I would love to hear from my fellow mer enthusiasts. :)
Without further ado, here is my first art post of the thread:
"The Embrace" (aka "Visiting Grandma"):

You did this on a computer? :o that's neat! Before I read it, I thought this was an actual picture of a model

That's right. :) Would you believe that those two are actually based on the same default 3D models? The upper halves are based on Poser 3's default human female models, while their lower halves are based on the program's dolphin model. But I've tweaked the figures so much that they don't look like each other.... or very much like the original models either. I was a bit taken aback by the result myself when I had the program render the image. I never thought two oddly- colored mermaids could end up so hauntingly realistic-looking.

I strongly recommend looking at the images in this thread on a computer rather than via Tapatalk on a phone. Tapatalk makes the pictures really, really blurry.

Thank you, both Miyu and QueenZero. I've been pouring all my heart and imagination into my artworks. They're windows into my mind... well, the artistic side of my mind. (The scientist side can be annyoingly crass and snarky sometimes.)
Miyu, you can't imagine how much fiddling it took to get the skin of grandma and granddaughter mermaids to look metallic. I got the idea from an advertisement I saw on a ferry. There was a woman with golden skin so I thought a golden mermaid would look great. But at first, I only managed to make figures look stale like statues. Then I just got the parameters right by accident when I was editing another figure.
QueenZero, that gorgon was also inspired by the Echidna (who is snake waist-down). But the result didn't look all that frightening, so I took some impressions from the Zerg in Starcraft and added some extra limbs with claws.

How could I miss this thread?
I've worked with a poser-like program in the past to make animations and poses for SL.
It's pretty hard!
I like the Sea Gorgon especially :D

Thanks for commenting, Echidna. I kinda suspected that a snake-lady would be to your liking. :)
I have Poser 3 and I've found it very easy to use, but I can't comment on other similar programs. What's SL? (Sign language? Second Life? I suck at abbreviations).

Very nice, all of these new pieces! I especially love "Beneath Crystal Falls." The colors are lovely, and the movement so dancerly. And your gorgon rocks!

I was starting to feel a bit restless while waiting for a new version of Poser, so I decided to revisit one of my earlier pictures. I didn't get the dramatic lighting conditions that I had originally envisioned to work when I did the first version. This new version is closer to what I had in mind to begin with, but I kinda like both versions though.

These past months I've been familiarizing myself with a new version of Poser, namely Poser 11. All I can say is that it's an ongoing process and there are so many new functions to learn! Here's a picture that I pieced together a while back. It consists mostly of pre-made models that came with the program itself. I did the artistic composition. I made the water itself with the help of an old tutorial I found on the web.
At this stage I still feel a bit like I'm just rearraging stuff that other people have made, but as I continue to learn how to use this new piece of software I'm positive that I'll be able to add more of a personal touch to my Poser pics of mers and their surroundings.

This is an oldie from a few years back that I did with Paint Shop Pro and Poser 3. The figure in the lower right corner didn't come out right, but otherwise I'm quite satisfied with it. :)
