I had a question, it might be a bit of an odd one but I was wondering if anyone knew if tail makers offered the option of non-painted tail commissions? Meaning like say I liked a specific tail shape by a certain company, would it be possible to get that specific tail but UN-painted so that a person could paint it the way they would like it and of course would that make commissioning cost a little bit less though I'd imagine not by a lot of course?
I've heard so many stories about how some people get an item they see online (not just tails but in general), liked the colors of it but when they get it in person they didn't care much for the colors being that colors can be different in photos vs. in hand. So this question came up in a recent conversation I had with some friends of mine and I was like..."You know, I have no idea if that is an option or not." so I thought I would ask and what better place to ask than here!
Has anyone thought of this or done it?

I've had several orders for unpainted tails, some with monofins, some without. I usually drop the price roughly $200 (depending on the monofin) because I wouldn't need to buy paint or put work/time into painting.
I'd imagine the smaller retailers (like Merbella, but probably NOT Mertailor) would be willing to sell you an unpainted tail. Personally I LOVE the look of unpainted tails and have been kicking around the idea of an albinistic mersona (red contacts, lighten my hair a little, I'm already pale enough) just so I can justify getting an unpainted tail!

It might prove to be problematic for a tailmaker in that, if a client were to paint a blank tail badly, and then be asked who they got it from, it would be a bad reflection on the tailmaker.

Thank you for the info! It's good to know that that option is available for people. I had no idea.
PearlieMae, I totally get what you're saying. I truly hope someone would be considerate enough to mention that they were responsible for the paint job. I know I would take credit for painting it regardless of how good or bad it is but yeah there are some out there that probably wouldn't. :(

I only mention it as a devil's advocate, as we all know how difficult it is to maintain a good reputation. :)

Morticia, how much would you charge for an unpainted neoprene tail without a monofin? I'm looking to do a sequin tail so I wouldn't be painting it, but I'm not sure I would be able to have the time to order and sew the neoprene before my surgery. I'm thinking of doing the sequins during my two month recovery period.

Message me and we can discuss pricing :) sequin tails are fun to make, currently working on one for myself

I love the idea of an albinistic mermaid.
My skin has very unusual markings and my tail is going to reflect the
same pattern that my skin has. I'd love to see how an albino mermaid would look.
Maybe you could just get a pearlescent shimmer paint for the tail to still keep it very pale.

I know that Jesse at Mermaid Creations has a deal going on $600.00 for a basic tail, and you choose from certain colors. One of them is a "skin tone". I'm actually wondering the opposite, what if you make a silicone tail, out of dragon skin silicone an apply the same amount of time and materials used by many of the reputable makers out there, but you love the color pigmentation design of those makers, would they paint your tail for you? I guess I'd have to ask them directly. But what do you think?

You could probably find someone, although remember a lot of cool paint jobs would be with pigment already in silicone or something like that. I'm not quite aure if they would paint someone else's tail.

You cant repaint a tail from Jesse he puts a latex perma wet coating over top of the silicone. It's one of the biggest flaws I think. People like the "wet" look but it never properly cures and peels off taking the color with it, and makes it so you can't repaint it.
I think most tail makers shy away from working on someone else's mermaid tails because it causes drama. I know I was going to get raven to repaint our mermaid creations tail when she did mine last year (because of the colour issues) but she wasnt comfortable with that and as we tested, realized it wouldn't work anyway. I think of the few scenarios I have heard of other tail makers taking on a different tail maker's tail, they've all ended badly. People think someone's going to be able to fix another's paint job or issue and it just doesn't seem to work because of all the variable involved. There is a specific time window with dragonskin as well where it'll accept colour. Cured past that state can be much more difficult.
