Hi everyone,
So I'm working on creating my mersona and it's a lot of fun! But I'm having a hard time choosing my name. I want to take inspiration from Greek mythology, so I looked into names of nymphs and other characters, and narrowed it down to a few that I don't believe are claimed by other mermaids.
Theia: Titan goddess of sight and clear blue skies who endowed gold, silver, and gemstones with their brilliance and value
Alexirhoe: naiad of the springs of the river Grenikos
Callithea: wife of Lydian king Atys and mother of Tyrrhenus; part of the scientific name of several butterflies
Chione: goddess of snow
Ianthe: translates to purple or violet flower; one of the 3000 oceanides
Kalliste: means fairest/prettiest; nymph of the island Kalliste in the Aegean Sea.
Kastalia/Castalia: nymph of the springs of the Delphic Oracle
What would you guys recommend? If there's any already claimed or similar to someone else's name I will gladly choose a different one. Thanks!

Why not just used your regular name? :) I'm sure it's as equally beautiful as those names you've mentioned. Or a nickname.
I've never quite understood the whole different persona thing personally. Names have the power to control you, by changing your name, you also change all of you with it when you portray said name.
I had a model friend, before she turned 18, go by Miss Panda. It was cute for a long while, but then professionally, people stopped taking her seriously as she aged. She tried to change it back to Elisabeth however since she had stuck with Panda for so long, it was a hard transition. And it didn't work out to her favor. Or anyone's favor that I've known who've gone by an alias. Except drag queens because that's another world and they're professionally known for such alias's.
I say stick with a nickname or a middle name or your actual first name. All the big professional mermaids have and it seems to do them well. Even reality show stars, after the reality show life, have had to resort to their actual names to get taken seriously.
But again, my opinion from an entertainment standpoint as a model/actress.

A lot of people want to keep their mermaid life separate from the rest of their life. They may want to be seen as professional so that a quick google search won't come up with all sorts of mermaid junk. Other times it's a persona, like twig the faerie. Idk I see both sides :)

Thanks so much for your input! It would be nice to go by my own name, but my inner actor is more excited to create a separate character, as whom I would perform. Not an alias but a role. My goal as a professional mer would be to bring magic and fantasy to the world around me (the same reason I study theatre). In life and business I would use my real name, and reserve my mermaid name for when I am in character. (:

Names drawn from mythology are good, but they have some drawbacks. First, their actual significance doesn't matter if your selecting a name for performing at parties, cause no one knows that stuff. No one will say, "Mermaid Alexirhoe? Like the naiad of the springs of the river Grenikos? Cool! You're hired!"
Second, you want your name to be easy to remember and easy to spell, which those name's aren't. People will never remember Alexirhoe or Ianthe or Chione, much less spell it correctly enough that google can find it.
Also, make sure the domain name you'll want isn't taken.
Also, I just want to point out that Mermaid Hannah uses her real name, so its not absolutely necessary to take a stage name. That said, I imagine using your real name does make it easier for creeps to stalk you, and having mermaid stuff come up in a search might be a liability when applying for non-mermaid related jobs.

That is a very good point about spelling, thank you! I just thought nymphs would be a creative place to start. Maybe I'll mess around with spelling or shorten them, or just keep looking. I know it's not necessary but I would really prefer to not use my own name
