I'm trying to figure out a swim top to go with my tail that I'm working on but I'm coming up blank. I know a Bandeau type top would be the easiest but I don't want to show my stomach if possible. I've thought of draping netting from the top to cover my stomach but I'm not sure. Then I got this bright idea about crocheting a top.

Do you think a crocheted top would suit a mermaid?

Like this top but with additional netting added to the bottom of it... http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mermaid-scales

wow, that's really neat looking!
like scales AND netting, both crocheted!

of course it would fit a mer.
I crocheted many tops in a similar fashion and they look much like silicone.
I also did whole tails :p

I really like the scales+netting look. Wish I had seen it sooner xD

There is a pattern out there that looks more like scales. I've seen it called mermaid scales, dragon scales & crocodile scales.

yes, that's the stitch I used for my tails, tops, and leggings

Is that more of a 'fan' stitch, or is that the actual crocodile stitch? Oh, your poor hands!

a crochet top would totally work and you could still incorporate some of the netting and sew pearls and shells into the netting if you want you stomach covered!!! Best part of being a mer is no one is going to question what you are wearing b/c remember we found all this stuff in the sea!!!!

Do make sure you use cotton yarn or another yarn that is meant for swimwear. If you don't, the top will just fill up with water and sag once you actually get in the water. I just finished my crochet top a couple of days ago. I'll probably post a pic somewhere.

Does crochet cotton work or must it be a special type of cotton yarn? I also read somewhere that rayon yarn works too.

Crochet cotton works, but get very heavy when wet. ;)
