View Full Version : Swarovski Crystals On Tail?

Has anyone made a tail with Swarovski crystals? Did it work out for you? I have bedazzled swim suits before, and they held up--they have a surprising amount of staying power. I also know you can hotfix stones to neoprene as long as you do it carefully--I have done it to a laptop case before.
I searched the forum and the internet, but I couldn't find examples of them used for a tail. Of course, most of my internet results were showing mermaid style wedding and prom gowns instead of ACTUAL mermaid tails, so I might very well have missed them! Would love to see some pictures and get an idea of how well they hold up.

It would probably end up being super heavy.

I don't think anyone has! Pearliemae was putting sparkles in her silicone tail but I think she figured out that large glitter and rhinestones would cut through the silicone.

So beautiful!I did find a way...it's not perfect, though. I found that rhinestones, sequins, and chunky glitter will cut through and you lose them, but if you take a piece of tulle (very fine netting, think bridal veil) and cut a patch bigger than the embellished area, then smear the entire patch with a layer of silicone. I just use my finger, and enough silicone to seal everything down without bubbles. It does deaden the sparkle a little, but gems gleam and glow underwater. Coes a color of tulle that won't clash. I find nude or black works for most applications.Mermaid Jessica uses rhinestones and I think she uses Silpoxy.Always test first!

22452The entire fluke was filled with pearls and crystals. They where added with e6000 glue on the latex and it hold up pretty well. :)

@ Arion & Crystal Shimmer: Gorgeous! I will have to get some. I love crystals and I think they will make great three dimensional accents to painted scales.
@Rahyvynn: I don't plan on covering the whole thing, so weight shouldn't be a problem. But even if someone did, swarovski crystals are pretty weightless--that is usually what is covering the sparkling gowns you see Hollywood stars wear on the red carpet.
@Pearlie Mae: Luckily I am not doing silicone so it won't be a problem that way. Very good info to know in case I ever do, though!

I used rhinestones on my 4th of July tail and that sucker accidentally got slammed around against the rocks quite a few times but it held up surprisingly well! Although my tail is also fabric so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Seavanna if you'd like to use some high quality glass stones rather than the expensive Swarovski let me know; I have a great supplier from Asia who's stones are amazing. I use them on all my costumes instead of Swarovski (unless I need a special color only Swarovski does). Just tell me what size/color you need and how many gross. :)
