Hi, this is my first post~ :)

So I'm making my own fabric mermaid tail this summer, and of course I'm going to buy the fabric. (Monofin I have: Finis Foil)

I know Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts have the textures that most mermaids use, and there are two locations where I live, but I don't want to have my parents drive very far to get there.

I go to Hobby Lobby occasionally, it's just the last time I walked into their fabric department was 3 years ago O__O My family and I go there for decor and craft purposes, so I was wondering if HL had the right materials for mermaid tails. And what about Michael's? There's a M-store near a market where I live, and I want to know what kind of fabric they sell, too. Thanks!

I want to know what I'm expecting so we don't just drive to a store for nothing X(

Hobby Lobby will have a veeeery minimal selection if any. The one where I live sells mainly cotton and apolstery fabrics. They sometime have spandex that is obviously meant for dance costumes (sequins, bright colors, plain black), but there have been times when they had NOTHING in spandex or nylon. Michaels I couldn't say. I only go there on Sundays, when Hobby Lobby is closed! I never buy fabric there. Jo Ann's is your best bet of the three because even Jo Ann's only has a minimal selection if "performance wear," as most of their stretch stuff is called. They will have solid colors, maybe sone silvers and golds, some sequins... But the patterns are come and go. Make sure the stuff you get is four way stretch. Jo Ann's had a scaled stretch material at Halloween, but when I pulled on it the scales stretched out and got deformed. So if you do find stretch fabric at HL or Michaels make sure you give it the tug test!

oh and welcome! I love all these Texas mers! What part if Texas are you in?

Hey, thanks for the help! ^_^ I sometimes wonder why Hobby Lobby couldn't hold more special spandex fabric just for the customers. I live around Dallas, TX :3 The only source of water accessible are the pool and Lake Lavon X3

If it doesn't pay for its shelf space, no one keeps an item in their stores.

Not enough mermaids or people looking to make swimwear to support the specialty fabric.

And don't get me started on Hobby Lobby.

I don't think so, but Joann Fabrics has a decent online selection. Otherwise I would suggest a specialty fabrics website.

I know the Michaels near my house has a little bit of fabric (although I live in Alberta, Canada). They don't have a lot though, and most of it is cotton and burlap and things like that. The U.S. has Fabricland, right? That's where I get my fabric, they have an awesome selection of fabric, and you can always buy online.

The Michael's up by us doesn't carry fabric either.

Thanks everyone! ^^ BTW, I know 1 yard is 3 feet, but how wide is it? Does the width of a yard's length of fabric vary?

It depends. 54 inches is the norm, but there are different widths. Look on the end of the bolt and it will tell you how wide it is. :) Oh, and I live around Dallas as well--Arlington!
