View Full Version : Confusion on Silicone Fluke Molds

Okay, I am SURE this is answered somewhere on this forum but I have been searching through threads and watching YouTube videos for three hours now trying to find the answer, so I am going to admit defeat and just ask. It's one of those questions where your brain just does not want to "click" with the answer!

If you make a fluke design and use the same mold for both sides, how do you account for the space that needs to be in between? Say I sculpted my fluke on top of my monofin: Well, I'd know that it would cover the ridges and that it could fit over the foot pocket, but then wouldn't I have that extra space on the back, making the sides not fit together? Or, if I didn't sculpt it over the monofin and just sculpted on top of a flat drawing, how do I account for any part of the fluke that goes over the foot pockets? Do I just count on the silicone flexing and stretching?

I always have these kind of questions when making three dimensional stuff. It's like it just doesn't click, going from 2d to 3d... Sewing patterns make my head spin sometimes.

I found silicone moves/stretches over the monofin so its better to mold it flat; I've not done it myself, but I imagine if you molded it over the monofin you would have to fill in the 'gap' with more silicone which would make the fluke really heavy! Others might have had a different experience, though :)

Yep! You just gotta make sure there's enough room on the sides to stretch over

Cool, thanks guys! I am excited to start molding my fluke! I just need to get my dad to take a dremel to the thing. I don't dare do it myself.
