Hello all!

I know I have not been around for a while and I will continue to be in and out in the near future (I swear I'm not a flake, just poor & work gets in the way of my dream) but I do want to post a little open ended discussion about starting a business as a mermaid.

As some of you may know, I started a business last year that fell apart when I ruined my tail while repainting it. I decided then that I would not start up agin until I had a full silicone tail and a solid business plan.

I am located in Southern California and one thing that we need here is a professional mermaid or mermaid team. There are not many mermaids for hire here and there is no shortage of beach and pool parties that go on.

I want to start a business as a mermaid but I want it to be unique and have many components that a wide variety of people would be interested in hiring for. I thought of doing adult parties, contracting out to hotel pools, offering a child's tail (since I can make relatively good fabric tails) that can be used or purchased at parties, having a mermaid team and hiring a strong, theatrical mertender, and even offering fitness & swim lessons similar to Kariel out in Hawaii.
So here's the question: What could you see as a unique addition to a mermaid business? What is something that children and adults alike would see in my details and be unable to pass up on?

Bear in mind, my business may not start for a year or 2 but when it does I want it to be the best of the best so that even if others have started in my area by that time, I am able to keep up with the competition.

If anyone reading this is also from Southern California, let's keep in contact! I'd love to chat with local mers interested in the same journey.

I love you all! Keep up the amazing community (:

So Cal merperson here! I hail from South OC, but tend to spend my time in North OC (grew up there & friends are still there).

I'm wanting to do the same, but I realize I need a real job in the meantime. So vet. tech. for me right now.
https://www.facebook.com/events/1488499978058843/ Here's a direct link to a monthly meet-up we do. I wasn't able to attend the last 2 due to job and life issues, but I'm hoping to make it to this one with my brand new silicone tail... I don't have it yet, but I hope to by then (getting made now).

A few of the mermaids that attend do get gigs, so they'll be able to give you some solid advice if this is something you'd like to do. I'm hoping to maybe join in on their fun just to get some experience (no pay for me, just showing up), but nothing's set in stone, so I may be on my own to figure things out. I'm of the mindset right now that whatever happens, happens. If it doesn't, then it wasn't meant to be.

I run online mermaid seminar workshops and one is specifically about starting up a mermaid business. I did it an NC merfest and online. I'll be doing it online again in September and be selling copies of it too.I think it would really help you. A few people from the forum found it helpful.

I do all kinds of a variety of things so I can live full time and we get into that in the workshop along with figuring out what is best for you

Definitely take Raina's workshops; they're a gold mine of information!

Raina's book is great too! Also I'm in Los Angeles and I'm just starting to look for events to do :)
