So I have been doing an appearance at a Summer Camp, visiting the campers. They have a make believe mermaid that lives in the lake, so I am bringing her to life. I have to see them several times over the Summer, some the same kids, some different. Ages range from K-8th graders. I am starting to run out of ideas of what to do. I have 3 groups that rotate through and are with me for about 30 min. We have just talked, had them ask questions, talk about stuff, they get a treasure, and can right me a message in my 'mermaid journal'. I am trying to think of if there is a game or something we could do to help pass the time and make it more interesting. I wont have access to alot of craft stuff, ( I dont think). That could be a possibility for a future one. anyone have any ideas?

How about a quiz about some fresh-water creatures?

Mermaid folklore if always a good one. Also, at the end of one session, you could give them an assignment to find things in nature they find fascinating and then make natural journals.then for next time, If you have access to some paper and yarn/staples, just have them make little books and then glue/tape their findings inside and write what they are. (: You capsule also play mermaid says, or tell stories about your life in the lake. Hope this helps a little!

I am doing the same thing right now but it's on the ocean! I've been documenting what I do with them over on my full time mermaid thread, feel free to try anything. I see them again on Wednesday and I'll be posting what I do too :) I hope you have as much fun as I am!

This is gonna sound cheesy, but make up a song and teach it to them. something water related. ask them about 'the human world' (little kids love that in my experience).
