So when my Finfolk tail will be done, I'm commissioning someone to make some pretty bad-ass armor for me. It will exists out of 2 shoulder pieces, hip armor and a trident. Most of it will be made out of Worbla; a thermoplastic very populair with cosplayers. She will seal it and use a hydrophobic spray.

These are the images that are used for inspiration:

and this is the first sketch she made for my shoulder armor:

So, I'm curious to what you all think. I've never actually seen merfolk with armor like on the digital images. Maybe because it's quite expensive?
Yeah, let's talk armor :p

VERY cool! I did not know you could seal Worbla for water use. That is awesome because I have a big ass sheet lying around!

And I love armor. It's very difficult to make, however, which is probably part of the reason you don't see a lot. Also because sometimes it's not very "swim friendly" in the sense of bending well--but if you make it right it would be AWESOME!

I want some armor desperately & LOVE your design!

My favorite I've seen so far of someone do is this version:

It's the only one I've seen so far, although her design is way too big for my taste.
If anyone is interested:

is the Facebook page of the person making my armor. It's truly a skill/talent you need to have to work with that material, but how awesome would an underwater photoshoot look with badass armor? :D

I too would have probably sized it down a little bit but still love it!

I've been working on a piece myself, I wore it this last weekend during an event (and got great reception from both guys AND gals).

Currently a work in progress though. Working on getting it finished before my next order goes out so I can send it with! (they expressed great interest in having a piece like it ^_^)

Actually, that's something I want to do, as well. I met my husband foam fighting, and armor really strikes me being right for me, as a mermaid. I can't wait to see how yours turns out!

I'm really obsessed with the idea of mermaid armour, as a story I'm working on about my mersona has her as basically being a royal guard. I keep trying to come up with concept sketches to hopefully have made into actual pieces sometime in the future, but it's hard settling on a look! I'd love to see more armored mers around! <3

My book about mermaids has them wearing armor of sorts. It's made out of bits of the clothing and possessions of people they have, well, drowned and eaten. Naturally the women almost exclusively wear the armor as they are the hunters and the men don't really need protection at home with the pups. The more elaborate and detailed a mermaids armor, the more respect she earns, because it shows all of her successful hunts..... Anyways yes mer armor is cool!

So It's been a while since the last update, but I finally have something to show you guys! The artist has started working on my armor, and this image will be part of a hip piece/belt:

It's far from finished, but I like it already! It will be fully waterproof, so I hope to be able to do an awesome underwater photoshoot with it once it's all done.

That looks great, Crystal! As it happens, I recently made a blue-ringed octopus myself for a top. It's a new product coming soon to my Etsy shop...

Sorry to Necro-post...... but this is VERY MUCH my jam. *NodNodNod*

I've started working with thermoplastics myself, and I would like to eventually create an armored mer-sona. I'm very glad to hear that Worbla can be used, and I just need to remember to fix with with a waterproof top coat. I do use a clear-coat already to most of my pieces, only because I want the colour to last and resist UV damage.

If you're looking for alternative ways to get regular Worbla smooth (the brown stuff), I know that layers of wood glue and a wet sand in-between layers with a 400 grit sandpaper makes worbla really, REALLY smooth. Like epic level smooth for metallic finishes. I'll be testing out the Black Worbla on a different project soon enough, but I hear that it's really good on the smoothness scale as well.
