Hi All! Good to be here :)

I want to make my own tail H2O style, with a hinge-style kickplate and fins extending from a rod. I want to make it as efficient in the water as possible, and I figured that if I could find a (cheap) monofin that I could easliy remove the boot from it would be a more effective foundation than craft foam and safer than plexi or wood.

Do you all know of or recommend a certain brand of monofin for this? Or is what I'm looking to do impossible?

If I can get away with it I'll craft the whole bare-bones contraption and share.

Thanks everyone! Keep up the good work all :D

Hmm I would suggest maybe a competitor because of the way the feet are mounted but they are pricey. Cheap and good don't overlap much with monofins. You could try to make one from lexan.

I agree. If you are wanting to do that, you may as well get it custom made. Go to a hardware store like Home Depot or something and ask them. It might not be the easiest to remove the foot pockets from some of the higher quality monofins.

lexan works great for custom shape mono fins.

I believe that you can buy just footpockets, but they are $60-$70. Check the monofin thread, I think there was a link from there. It would be cheaper than buying a $200-$300 competitor just to tear it up.

I definitely agree with the above posters. Lexan would work for a custom fin, and you can get Finis Zoomers that work well as foot pockets: http://www.finisinc.com/equipment/technical-products/training-fins/zoomers-gold.html (also available slightly cheaper on Amazon). I have a pair and they are comfy and fit well.

I used Tyr Burner EBP fins from sports authority for foot pockets. They cost $34.
They're nice because the fin part is very short but still provides a good spot to bolt the fins to the lexan. I also bolted them twice through each heel. Using stainless steel bolts of course.

Thanks for the tips y'all! I like the idea of going for something cheap at first - that way I can practice my technique and get my hands on something to get a better feel for it, then decide from there.
