View Full Version : A New Name?

While at Faerieworlds (which is amazing, btw) I have run into a minor problem: In my NW Pod there are at least two other Merlissas.
I introduced myself to someone in the pod and their reaction was, "Oh, another one. We have like two Merlissas already."
I know names will overlap, that is bound to happen, but with there being two others in my area with that same name, it makes me wonder if a name change is in order. It has been on my mind today since all three of us were in the mermaid lagoon together at one time and it makes introducing yourself a little more awkward.
I have a few names in my head, but I wanted some opinions on the matter before I started to change -everything- (websites, blogs, contacting people who have used my image to have them change my name, facebook, and so on.)
The top two names biding for my minds attention are Awena (named for my kitten who died of a brain tumor) or Muriel since I have just always like that name and it has always sounded fae/mermaid like...
Still, it would be so much work... Thoughts?

I totally sympathize with that. My husband took a job at a place where they had had another person with his name (he had left), and they kept referring to him as "not the real one". It bothered him a great deal.
In my humble opinion, you should change your name only if it makes you happy/ you want to. At the end of the day, it's your name, and it is you who have to live with it. Specially if that is already your performance name and you have to change all your advertising.
After all, how many times a year are you going to interact with the other people named Merlissa?

Aww you had it first. I do agree though in a pod situation it can be tricky

i feel ya. it always happens to me in school and because im not the solcial im always know as the other ___ or my full name so i like being called by my last name (my last name is cool, like its a name you would give to an OC). thats the reason why i dont like saying my name on the internet. my name is tooo common so i like being referred to as joker
i say a name change can be a good idea just to mix things up. try looking at names and for the next few days when you see a picture of yourself repeat the name and see if it fits you

In Greek mythology there was a mermaid in every body of water on the planet and that are connected by hidden underwater tunnels so the Merfolk could get around. Perhaps you could be "Merlissas of the River" and your short name is "Merlissas" or something like that.

I propose any of the following when introducing yourself at a pod meet:
Merlissa EXTREME
Dual Overhead Merlissa
The Artist Currently Known as Merlissa
Merlissa 2.0
MC Merlissa
Merlificent Merlissa
Maximum Merlissa
XD J/k! Seriously though, only change your name if YOU want to! I really like the name Muriel, but that's really up to you! maybe the other Merlissas went home and decided to change their names after the meet too!

Why not just make it regal? Queen Merlissa
Princess Merlissa
Or if you want to change it MERiel is a pun and Awena is a great name!

I wouldn't change a name that is already known to customers/fans.
Just add an epithet or surname; Merlissa Orca for example, there are plenty of options.

What about adding Awena or Muriel to the beginning or end of Merlissa?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
It still bothers me, but since everything is already labeled Merlissa, I am thinking I will just keep the name. I have a hard time adding "Princess" or any other title simply because it (to me) implies one is above the others and I don't consider myself above anyone (quite the opposite actually.)
A woman from a news paper did interview me and I gave her the name Merlissa to use. Who knows if anything was printed but she did take photos. Speaking of, I will have photos up soon.

Just think, if you coin the name first, get the name out there so people know it belongs to YOU, then you'll be at a conference or something and people will be all like "Hey, it's Merlissa!", and then the other ones will come over be everyone will be like "Oh, another one" and then you can sit there smugly like the awesome kick-butt mermaid you truly are. The other two will look at you with both horror and utmost respect because you have beaten them at their own game, and then change their own names just so that they do not feel shame at your very presence. You will forever be known as Mermaid Merlissa, and if anyone is willing to challenge you on that, you will have dozens of merfollowers who do believe that you are the only one worthy of that name to protect you against the faux-Merlissa, and they too will bask in the glory that is YOU. You will rise to fame, do inspirational speeches around the world, and finally be so well-known, that tail-making companies will PAY YOU for them to make you a tail. Own the name, Merlissa. OWN THE NAME.

You could just use a different name only when the other Merlissas are around too. There is no sense in you having to change your everything just because you'll be with others of the same name occasionally.
That being said if you feel a name change is order just be sure it's the right name for you. I myself haven't even decided on an official mermaid name. AmbrGlows just happens to be my email & Voxer name.

I am thinking of doing the exact same thing right now. I could never decide on a name to use so I just always used my own name but now I am feeling like I want to actually choose a name to represent my mermaid self. It is a lot of work but even so I think it will be worth it. Good luck!

I agree with everyone who suggested making a longer version of your name for when you need to differentiate, and to keep going by Merlissa the rest of the time. If you want another name go for it, but if you're just doing it to clear up confusion in that group its probably not necessary.

I ended doing a name change and just going with my real first name after I found out that there was another (more established) mer using the name Evangeline. It pained me to change it, especially because it was special to me and I already had business cards and promotional materials, but it was the right choice for my situation.

Your name is bayou? Omg...that is a wonderful name ... Everytime I hear it I think of blue bayou at Disneyland and how magical it was with the lanterns and soft music playing and ugh it was so romantic

Megan sounds pretty cool with a French Caribbean accent.
