View Full Version : How to get into "Mermaid" w/o kids seeing?

I have been contemplating different ideas on how to get into "Mermaid" per say without kids seeing when there isn't a room or of the like available. Like say the beach, besides changing before you reach the sand (hotel room etc.), and stuff like that. And also getting away from them. Of course I could have my big, strong, personal trainer, model brother (haha) carry me. But if not, I definitely need help.
What I have so far:
~ Changing in hotel room, using a luggage trolley to bring me down, be carried out to the pools/beach.
~Taking a super large beach towel down (covering tail with it on the way), laying on one put covered up tail on lap, unfold towel, still hiding tail, change underneath and mermaid scooch/be carried down to the water.
And now I'm drawing a blank... any other suggestions? And all other beach/hotel pool tips loved! ;D

in theory, you could change in the back of a car and be carried in or wheeled in at a private residence.

Hmmmm, that's awesome. But, I don't know if we can get one of those. If we can, great! Hahaha
Something more subtle? Lol
(p.s. really quick reply! Haha)

@MermaidWesley Yeah, but this is public. I know what I can do at private places. ;) It's the masses that trouble me. Hahaha

Ya... I may look into the canopies, or partial tents and we can cover the rest with towels or something. I'll check now. Hahaha

Also, it's not the end of the world if people see you. Sometimes Sean and I just go off somewhere where less people are. So long as it's not the clients. We always tell clients not to come to the location until the exact time or they may see a mermaid pulling up her tail. Today I changed in a storage shed for one gig, and for another I went to the neighbor's property to change, and swam over to the clients

Yeah, it's not as much the adults, but I just don't want the kids to see. And this isn't a gig, it's just a vacation. But practice for a gig. ;) I just want to minimize the eyes that lay upon the not-so-pretty-metamorphosis... lol

It has even a floor mat, which will keep the sand away when changing.
I hope i was helpful

I actually find tents more trouble than their worth personally. And usually arent big enough. It takes a lot to set up a little one even if they're "pop up" tents, and the fabric of the tent will often stick to tails. Then you gotta allot time for putting it up.
If you're on vacation, scope out the area first, and the easiest thing may just to be to put it on out of site. Or if you've got a strong person you can put it on somewhere out of sight away from the beach and have someone carry you down.
There's really no one answer, you wont know what's right for you til you scope out the area and get a sense.

Yeah... I'll have to look into that one a bit more. But, that me be the ultimate solution. I positive my brother can, and maybe dad, I just hope one will want to for me. And the trolley would take care of the long way down the building. I may just go with the towel cover thing. Hahaha
@JohnSavar I saw that exact one looking them up... it's a bit expensive. The one I found was cheaper. ;) But thanks for your input. :)

I bought a trolley from Northern Freight for about $50.00 for my jewelry business when I do shows. I totally plan on utilizing it for mermaiding. It folds up for easy transport.

We have a popup changing booth that we used for puppetry. It literally takes seconds to put up and take down. The base is not very wide, though, it would be hard to maneuver your tail in there. Also not windproof, but if you have a mertender, he/she could hold it down while you change. One of these days I plan to try it out changing into my tail. I suspect I would do fine with my fabric tails, but probably it won't work when I get my silicone tail.

If you have to do everything yourself and want to keep some of the magic, maybe this?
I think if you were alone and didn't have any help to get in or out of a wheel chair or some way to get to the pool, how about a large nylon sleeve "Similar to a large pillow case." No one could see the tail until the reveal. Start at the pool edge or even in the water if you had to. It would be small enough rolled up to be next to your towel when your not using it. Also if your swimsuit bottom was slipping it would give a little privacy.

my favorite beaches are rocky beaches and coves because i would change behind a rock or change in a cove with little people and swim to a cove next to it.
on open beaches if its low tide i go find a sand bar and change under the water (not fully submerged though) it gives you some coverage. somthimes i just move to a place with little kids. like whoever here siad: it really isnt the end of the world if people see you changing.

Thanks for all of the replies. I may just combine a few ideas. Like cover the tail on the way down get into the ocean have someone bring it over and drop it in change swim back up. Or just change in room and be carried down. Or the towel method. Lol

Those kids tents that can be folded up in one swift movement might work.

I love the pop up tent idea that is great I might have to add that to my gear, here is what I use to get around, it is a garden cart cost me about $99 and I put a thick exercise mat on it for comfort. My husband helps me get on and then he wheels me around!! Works perfect, I love the really thick all terrain wheels so I can get through anyones back yard

Maybe a super long maxi dress? XD Put the tail underneath you and spread the skirt over it and then wiggle into it?
I dunno, I usually have to change in my car in between princess gigs (and as a result I can now change OUT of a ballgown, wig and hoopskirt into an entirely DIFFERENT ballgown, wig and hoopskirt, without ever leaving the driver seat).
But I can still walk around once I'm done, so yeah. Some princesses use the pop up changing pods, but again, not room to but the tail on. Hmm! I've been agonizing over this too! :(

Since my tail is fabric and I spend most of my time at the beach, I swim away from the crowds, crawl up onto the sand and have someone hand me a towel. I just take it off under the towel, then wrap it up.

Idk if there's another thread for this, but how do you think you could get out of "Mermaid" without kids seeing without a mertender?
I'm more worried about getting in and out of the pool with my tail on, sans mertender, than not being seen changing. I figure, with a cloth tail, minimal obscuring is necessary, but if I don't do it right at the water's edge, getting around is going to be super tricky. How I ever let myself get talked into this event this weekend is so beyond me, especially with a cold snap coming through as I type.
I flop my feet up over my head anf old a towell on my skateboard, in a way it will not tangle the wheels and i roll myself in from outside, or a restroom stall.

It was a struggle the first time I swam, to leap up from the pool onto the side of it to sit there dragging all the wet fabric and monofin and at the same time, not embarrassing myself by my fail attempts!:$
That I've gotten used to just taking off the fabric tail whilst still in the pool. Its not like people are watching underwater anyways.

1: Little red wagon
2: Sit on a skateboard
3: Wheel Chair tactics... Put a towel over your tail, they are easy to fold up, and you can operate it yourself!
4: Maybe a Segway might work?
