I'm super excited to announce today Mermaid Jessica Pearl and myself started a new project we have been talking about for months - We are going to try to make our own silicon tops! Well hopefully - we will see haha.

So I've been wanting to do this for a while as I just don't have a top I like swimming in. Everything I have made so far either has a lot of drag or didn't stay together too well while swimming. I've got a couple of ideas but I manly want something that is comfortable and covers my boobs. Even tho I have quite a nice shell collection now I'm sick of them barely covering the front and leaving the sides open and needing to be filled with greenery. Since Jessica Pearl and myself are a similar size we will be working together and sharing the costs and hopefully we will get a couple of awesome tops out of it :)

So we have started off with a cast for shape. So much fun and mess. There is plaster everywhere! Monster clay has also been acquired!

So end of the day we ended up with a good body mould to work on top on to ensure we get a good moulded fithttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/29/ybubezar.jpg

Going to let the whole thing dry over night.

Thanks ladies ;) I'll just back up a tick: I covered a bra in duct tape to protect it from the plaster. Then we agreed I would be the dummy, so I put the bra on and Jess covered me in plaster cloth wrap. I love using plaster cloth, it's wonderful and so easy to use. The trick is to cut it up into little squares. This allows the cloth to go on smoothly with no wrinkles and you get more detail. Plaster also drys quite quickly and I was able to take it off about ten minuets later. The plaster then came away from the bra without any effort because the duct tape was so shinny it couldn't adhere to it. So I will keep that bra aside as I know my silicone cast with defiantly fit it. Using ordinarily clay I had lying around we used it to brace the plaster cast onto a board. We also placed clay under the boob cups so they are solid and won't collapse under pressure of the monster clay.

Ok so slow going due to the air dry clay not drying yesterday due to crappy weather. But it looked pretty good today so I have been able to paint on a clear coat of gloss sealer. The main reason why I wanted to seal the bust is so the Monster clay won't stick to the plaster/ air dry clay layer. When I'm done I want to be able to peel the monster clay off and reuse it do make a different design ( well I'll let mermaid Jessica Pearl have her play). I'm trying hard to use materials I already have in the house to keep costs down. Well nothing to do now but wait for more stuff to dry.

Woke up to this lovely lady this morning. My DD never looked so good Haha. She is all dry and ready to go. Only thing is that it's a really nice day today (considering it's winter here) and I might just have to go to the beach instead. Mermaid Jessica Pearl is visiting me today so it's a good chance to confirm design details too.

That looks awesome! How are you doing the straps?

Mermaid Amelia
08-02-2014, 12:27 PM
Haven't fully decided on the straps yet. I was going to see how the front came out and go from there. After a couple of false starts with the monster clay I finally have made some progress on the design. In fact I was on a role, before I knew it it's past midnight and I have my twin boys first birthday party tomorrow! Need sleep. Will try to remember to take a photo to post. Bed.

Haha that is a good reason to stop.... I was just wondering because in the last photo it looked like you have a bit of a strap on there, and then it just sort of stopped. I wasn't sure if you were going to take it off and leave it strapless or add more on to the end of it. :)

Mermaid Amelia
08-02-2014, 08:27 PM
Oh no straps for sure! I find strapless tops so uncomfortable and slide down all the time. My head is a little better now and I can process the whole strap question now. Yes I was going to include a parcel strap in the front design and then make separate straps to attach later. That way I can make sure I get a good fit.

Looks awesome! I want to make a turbo or nautilus top, What is the process of casting the mold and then casting with silicone? Two part or do you brush it on? :)

Mermaid Amelia
08-04-2014, 07:26 AM
My plan is to build a box around the bust and then pour plaster over the clay (to avoid using fibre glass). Then pour silicone into the plaster mould. I haven't done this before so I'm nervous/scared/excited to see how it will turn out. Also I live in Western Australia and materials aren't as easy to come by. And the ones you can fine are expensive :/

Mermaid Leira
08-04-2014, 08:27 AM
I purchased some dragon skin online as a trial kit and there was a fair bit of product for about $60 aus, I'm in vic. I've trialled and it really travels (runs) in its 5 hour curing time when using the 10 medium one, I wasn't sure what the process was to make a hollow cast of the shell to adhere to the bra base. You could paint single layers at a time in the mold and cure in between but it would take ages! I wonder if you could use toothpicks or something to scafold the clay possitive mold a few mil above the plaster neg mold and fill the gap with dragon skin?? Good luck! I love your sculpt :)

Mermaid Amelia
08-04-2014, 08:37 AM
What I was thinking was taking the monster clay off the busy I'm moulding it on and put in on a different board. I might see how far I can flatten it. But yeah it would be awesome if I could have a boobie shape in the back suspended so it dosnt just become a solid silicone blob and leave no room for the actual breast.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Mermaid Leira
08-04-2014, 08:44 AM
Yep need room for the boobwaz and too thick would be mighty heavy, there's lots of tutorial on special effects suppliers websites but they're long-windedly and complicated, I might try some little tests and let you know what they turn out like :)

PearlieMae
08-04-2014, 08:44 AM
Maybe you could make a breast-shaped insert to press into the mold to displace the silicone up and around it...analogous to a shot glass (mold) of liquid (silicone) with an ice cube (bewbie form)? Does that make sense?

Mermaid Leira
08-04-2014, 08:47 AM
Yes pearlie, maybe the plaster bra base sealed?

Mermaid Amelia
08-04-2014, 09:01 AM
Bloody autocorrect I meant to say bust not busy above. I just had dinner with my mother in law and all I can think about is going home to work on it haha so terrible :P

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

PearlieMae
08-04-2014, 09:14 AM
Probably wouldn't even have to be sealed, dragonskin peels off of nearly everything except fabric (ruined my favorite yoga pants! sigh...), but a coat of white glue or acrylic paint would suffice.

I have painted dragonskin over a shaped form, and I use the slow set, and if you have a desk lamp with a warm bulb, it sets it pretty fast and you can brush more into your mold fairly quickly...like within 20 minutes!

Mermaid Leira
08-04-2014, 10:38 AM
It would be awesome if you could use the bra, minus the duct tape as the negative boob form and have the silicone adhere to is at the same time??? Your wisdom on that pearlie? :)

PearlieMae
08-04-2014, 11:04 AM
In theory, yes, but I would be concerned that the rubber elastic in the bra might cause cure inhibition issues (always test first!), and in doing it separate, you could better place the casting onto the bra rather than mold and hope.

Lostariel Telrunya
08-04-2014, 11:12 AM
I agree with Pearlie. And, that way you still have the bra to wear :)

So I worked a bit more on it today then after two hours of solid work time the second boob was just not sitting right. I pulled most of it off and tried a few more times but just wasn't working for me tonight. I think I made the clay to thick compared to the other side so I will mush it back up and start again. I'd rather have something I'm 100% happy with instead of rushing it and being disappointed.

I worked on the top more tonight and I'm happy with it so far. I'm almost finished moulding, now just touching up here and there and plugging and gaps in the clay. Warm monster clay is one of the most amazing things to touch and squish through your fingers, I love it. Ive been keeping a small blob of clay tucked in my bra while Ive been working, it keeps the clay at body temperature and soft, ready to be moulded. It saves me going back and forth from the microwave every time the clay gets too hard and cold. I know I've got a heat gun somewhere but alas it is lost within my labyrinth of art supplies. I've also been using different tools which I've found really helpful to get a clean line, but using the side of my finger nail also works well. I forgot to snap some photos but I can always do that in the morning, for now, bed. G'nite.

No turning back now. Used up both my normal and back up plaster. Not sure how long it's gunna take to dry as it's such a big mould. I'm just gonna leave it for a while. I found Vaseline was really good for damming small gaps. God I hope this has worked! Ok so now to wash the plaster off... Well everything! Boy, this takes me back. I've made soooo many puppets with clay sculpt and plaster mold. To hold the plaster, I used four blocks of wood held together with C clamps. Reusable, and easy to adjust the size of the wood "box." And I dammed the bottom of the box with more clay.

I was pretty enormous while pregnant & breastfeeding, could hardly find anything to fit. Although that is one if the perks of making something yourself you can make it to fit your measurements. Obviously you know your size better than me but this top is designed to fit an Australian DD ;)

Wonderful work!

You know, you could save a buttload of painting by pigmenting your silicone before you pour it! ;)

Beautiful! How did you do the pour in the concave mold? :)

We had a think about it but we specifically decided not to pigment the silicone for a few reasons. 1. We weren't sure exactly what colour scheme we wanted yet. 2. We hadn't bought the pigment yet but wanted to get a start because we have had the silicone a while and it has a short shelf life and 3. Were were thinking that we wanted to have a few different light and dark colours involved so wanted quite a plain base to work from.

We just finished painting, clear coating and attaching to the bras today. Wasn't anywhere near as difficult as I thought it would be, just messy! We were going to airbrush them but our ideas were a bit complicated so we decided against it.

I started off with one plan for my coral top (Green blending to orange blending to flesh) but part way through decided it would look a bit better mostly one colour as it would look more like a piece of coral. I also realised that using a brush I could get some texture in there. So i stippled the paint as I applied it and added flecks and texture so that it looked more coral like. I had originally wanted to do this in the mould itself but didn't like how it looked when I was carving it in the monster clay so smoothed it all out. I am really glad I was able to add this in the paint layer!

And the concave mould ended up working really well. We were planning on suspending the positive breast cast above the silicone but neither of them survived the casting process very well.

So what we did is we poured several separate thin layers of silicone and spread it through the mould with a spatula. And then angled the mould on subsequent layers to get even coverage.

'We used the medium cure silicone (the only one you can get here in Australia) so this meant that we had to keep an eye of it and spread it a few times if it settled, especially on Amelia's deeper top. After about 45 minutes (and about 2 re-spreadings) it becomes tacky enough to stay put on it's own.

This sounds more annoying than it actually was! We spent a couple of hours on them checking the pours between cups of tea and baby wrangling. I am actually surprised by how easy it was. And I am surprised that we didn't have any problems with the silicone being temperamental since the weather has been a bit strange here and I tend to get impatient and was probably not as careful as I should have been!

We got our tails out to try and match colours. My baby boy thought it was all very interesting. I don't think these photos do them much justice though because the iridescent pigments just shine so amazing and the camera can't capture it. I'm very proud of our first try at silicone tops. Hopefully we can show you some pictures of us wearing them tomorrow xxx

:jawdrop: HOLY MACKEREL THOSE ARE AMAZING

I really, really love these tops, and now I'm really wanting one of each! I've been wanting a coral top for a while, and that shell top is just too beautiful... and OMG that octopus. I need multiples of that. I would make so many things, and then have one just as my little octo-buddy!

You mers are doing just such a fin-tastic job, everything's really just beautiful <3

@Melaina I think we would but we have to figure out a what we could reasonably charge. Please keep in mind our materials cost double in Australia than they would in the US :/

I'm well aware. Often, though, buying something more expensive from Australia negates the ridiculous shipping from the US, so the price difference ends up being negligible.
In any case, I'd be happy to pay more for a beautiful top that actually fits me!

I know I'm a bit late the game hear but beautiful work ladies. I have a question for you, and forgive me if this is a silly question I'm relatively new, but I was wondering how did you get the silicone attached to the bra itself

Mermaid Amelia
04-11-2015, 06:01 AM
Hey Saelyyia! The first bra I used more silicone as it will stick to fabric, however since then I've lost weight and have put this on a smaller bra and just sewed it on with fishing line, hope that helps :)

They both look fabulous ladies!! I'm planning on embarking on this adventure myself. Slightly nervous but mostly excited. Funny thing here is that in this part of Canada I can only get the slow or the fast dragon skin... Reccomendations as to which i should get? I'll be most likely trying to brush it on/do something similar to what you gals did :)

FAST get fact silicone. We spent so much time standing over it scooping it back up the sides while it cured.
