I recently purchased a custom fabric tail. When I got it, I tried it on and it seemed a bit large in the hip area. Is this how they are supposed to fit or should it be snug tight against the body? I haven't swam in it yet because I want to take it up if I have to first before I get it wet.

Mine is also a bit baggy in the hips. I think it has to do with basic measurements not accounting for body shape. I'll be taking mine in too, but I already swam in it. It doesn't stay up well.

Taking it in is a good idea, also, if your tail doesn't have an elastic waist I would suggest adding one.

A fabric tail should fit nice and snug, but not be tight so that when you swim you rip it. There is a happy middle ground we strive for :)
