I believe there is a sushi (or chinese/sushi) place in the shopping center before NRH Centre, there's also a bubble tea place we discovered that we haven't got to try yet!

I don't have a facebook to comment on the group but they charged us less last time because the deep pool was closed due to the filtration issue. It normally is $10 for nonresidents and $7 for residents.

Oh, thank you! I'll be sure to comment that for you. They've never charged us more than $7, so maybe the people working there are new. XD

OMG GUYS!!!

Soooo I was at Taco Bell and I saw a little coupon card with a MERMAID on it in a fabric tail! I pick it up and it's a "Water Circus"!! It's even held at North East Mall!

Here's a link: http://cirqueitalia.com/the-acts/

It's November 12th - 15th and it's roughly $30 for a mid area seat.

It looks really awesome and it's the PERFECT meet up!

Mermaid Lunette
11-04-2015, 01:06 AM
man, that sounds really fun :D

although to be honest, just on a personal note (note sure if anyone else has the same issue) i really can't spare the extra cash, things have been really tight financially, so if you guys go please take pictures? i would love to see it ^_^

Lotus the Mermaid

Hey, guys! Let's say that, because of the holidays coming up, our next meets will be the first weekend in December and the first weekend in January! Does that work for everyone? :)

Mermaid Lunette
11-15-2015, 03:46 PM
I'm cool with that ^^

Lotus the Mermaid
11-29-2015, 04:57 PM
Hey, sorry for the delay in posting!

Is everyone still all right with the first weekend in December for our meet? :)

Lotus the Mermaid
12-01-2015, 03:35 AM
Let's go ahead and say our next meet-up is this next Sunday! We'll do a dual-meet, if that's all right with everyone!

We'll start with lunch at 1 at Sushi Yaa in NRH, and then go to NRH Centre! If anyone has any objections or reservations, PLEASE let me know! :)

I remember you mentioning it. Probably since their chefs were new. It had just been set up, after all. I just won't order anything with shrimp in it. :)

Aysun, Lunette MAY have talked me into bringing it. I didn't want to burden anyone with helping me hoist that thing, but she said she'd be willing to help so we'll give it a shot. I certainly want to practice swimming in it! Sadly, I can't take it into the hot tub. xD

Lol! Nice. I bet it's effective. The instructions that came with my tail suggested not exposing it to extreme temperatures. It was likely as a precaution. I doubt I'll be interested in lounging in boiling water.

PearlieMae
12-02-2015, 05:32 PM
You don't have to take my word for it. It's all in the research and documentation. I doubt you'll be boiling yourself, either, I just wanted to let you know that platinum cure silicone remains stable even at high temps. A hot tub at 110˚ is well within its tolerances. But I understand being gentle with your new baby!

That being said, a painted tail might be a bit more delicate than a pigmented tail.

I hope you guys have a blast! Take lots of pix and vids!

MermaidBrandie

*pokes head in*

Products that are not 100% silicone will turn to goop at high temps, unfortunatly a lot of people who don't work with "my products" don't know this and assume anything soft and rubber like is silicone and thus cannot handle high temps. True, 100% body safe silicone (like dragonskin and eco-flex) can be boiled for sterilization or even set on fire with no harm coming to them (it's how we test the purity of silicone in the store I used to work in -- you should see customers faces when we light the display on fire only for nothing to happen!).

For more advice on how to care for silicone, in general, might I recommend Dangerous Lilly?

*goes back to reading fanfiction and lazing about in between making "my products"*

I am going to come out and admit that I am not skilled in any way at swimming in a tail.

The two times I tried to swim in the FinFolk I use for work it kept trying to drag me under because it has terrible drainage (or none, really), the monofin is cutting its way out, and... yeah.

So be prepared for wall clinging and general patheticness.

I'm starting to put together a list of contact and location information for the local merfolk. It has come to my attention that not all of us here are part of the Facebook group and not everyone on Facebook is a member here. This makes it very hard to organize any sort of meet-up. I'm hoping that this list will make it easier for all of us to contact each other. I know that Mermaid Lotus has been organizing the meet-ups and I hope this is especially helpful to her. If you will email me at mermaidsessilee@gmail.com with your name, mername, location, phone number and email. Emails are the best way to send out such things as event details and invites. Phone numbers are best for day of event communicating. This list will be made available to anyone else listed...much like a club directory. If you have questions or concerns you can email me those as well.

I'm not trying to take control just trying to help get us organized after the awful experience I had today when the swim meet-up fell through at the last minute.

I was there from one thirty onwards in the 9ft pool with my fin on and Moon_Lightning showed up around 3 when I had gotten out and went to the hot tub carrying my fin. Is it possible we missed each other?

That and the fact that the staff didn't care. Before I left I asked the desk staff if I could go look in the pool area or if they could go look for me to see if any mermaids were in the pools. The girl said she had not seen any inside. I was there at 2:45pm.

This communication breakdown is something we need to fix. We have menfolk on two different social medias and it's hard to coordinate the two. My tapatalk doesn't always work without WiFi. I'm gathering information from all the merfolk to help us form up some better way of communicating.

i am probably only speaking for myself here but i just wanna say that i don't even really give anyone my facebook account info unless i have met them in person so i personally don't feel comfortable giving out my email and phone number where the whole pod (whom i have not all met before) can access it?

(i mean, i am not completely sure how you plan to use the info? so maybe i am misunderstanding, but usually a directory is something most people can access? and i am just not comfortable with peeps having my info BEFORE i have met them? i am sure our pod is filled with lovely mers, but we are not immune to the occasional bad fish-egg (i have seen we have had a few, almost none have ever come to the meet ups tho) but still. that's just me though, if others wanna give their info cool, not trying to judge or convince anyone else, i just wanted to be honest and upfront that i am not comfortable doing that.

There are glitches to be worked out in all things. I can see and understand your concerns. I can and WILL make the changes so that only myself and Mermaid Lotus have access to the information. We will be working together to create an email newsletter to send out to all members of the list. This will cut down on the number of places that Lotus and others need to post things in order to get the pod together.

I know that you and Lotus are good friends so if you want she could forward the email newsletter to you so that you see was what everyone else is seeing.

You could all get the telegram app, if you have a google voice number then sign into telegram with that and make a group chat that way. No one get personal info, everyone can communicate. :)

Yeah I feel the same as Lunette on this one. This is the first meet this has happened at, right after the holidays. Maybe we should establish where at the pool we meet? Since you had never gone before you didn't know we spend most of our time in the deep pool so that's normally first place I go.

yea, I like the idea of establishing a specific place at the pool we meet and I also feel the holidays having just been around the corner might have had something to do with it. I mean, I know I have been saving money so it was difficult for me to go this time.

I'm just trying to make it easier for pod events to be organized. If there was just one list of email addresses that Lotus had to email that means she's not having to go between two networks to organize things. I've told her I would turn everything over to her so she's the only one with the information.

I'm only trying to help. Forgive me for being overzealous about this idea.

This is the first time a pod meet up didn't go as expected in the DFW area. Usually we have no issues of everyone meeting up! I think it was just to early after all the holidays for everyone to meet. That's why I was trying to shoot for the 9th/10th ( I know that I accidentally put 8th/9th here and on the poll and I'm sorry, got my days mixed up!!) I agree that we need a better way of communication because not everyone on Mernetwork is in the Facebook POD vice/versa. This is the link to the Pod of Texas Facebook group if you don't know it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/311471195561315/ I think you all have very good ideas about apps etc but I personally can't download any apps on my current phone because there isn't enough space. I am going to be getting a new phone soon! A newsletter would be SO helpful and awesome! I also know that there is a website currently being built for DFW mers. I also agree that we need to find a designated spot to all meet up at the pool and a time for everyone to be there by before swimming time, by that being said if you are going to be late just know that we usually swim in the 9ft deep pool and you can meet us there! Again, sorry that it didn't quite work out this time and for my absence! I know that future meets are going to be tons better! :)

I think it's safe to say that we're doing well enough. Anyone can feel free to text me (817-317-1066, I really don't care that it's public) so that I have your number in case anyone is confused about a meet. I think that's all that really needs to be done to improve communication. It would be great if everyone joined the Texas pod FB group, but not everyone has a FB. I hope that's helpful.

Definitely a good reminder. That's why I normally make FB events and post the times and location(s) here before each meet, no later than a week in advance most of the time! So if anyone wants to know where we are and who's going, just be sure to check either the Pod of Texas where I'll post the event on FB or this thread and you should be fine.

If you have the option to join the Pod of Texas FB group and you haven't already, please do so! It's just so much easier to organize there in a way that's also easily accessible. :)

I started a thread about meeting up with the mers at Scarbrough in May and I thought I'd post here and see if DFW Pod wanted to do that as a meet up or an extra meet up that month. The date picked out is the date of Fantasy Weekend so there's a costume contest and lots and lots of other fantasy creatures will be there. Mers could carpool if they wanted and it's far enough out people can plan/budget for it.

I'd love to swim in a lake at some point with the whole Pod! I don't know if Joe Pool is my favorite option because the water has always looked very murky in my experience. But of course, democracy rules and I'll hold a poll to see if we should have our next meet at the lake and which one everyone would prefer. This meet has already been assigned to NRH once more, but I'm always up for a change if everyone gets enough notice! <3

Trade Winds
05-26-2016, 07:57 AM
No matter what lake you go to it is going to be murky. There are no clear options unless we go to a relatively unpopulated nature area, but it'll still get muddied after everyone goes stomping around. Or we can go somewhere fairly early before human traffic gets there. But for clear bodies of water it isn't happening. Of course dark waters don't bother me...

Lotus the Mermaid
05-26-2016, 11:08 AM
Well, muddied and inherently murky are different of course. And like I said, we'll take a vote so it will be fair. You don't need to convince me of anything. :>

Hey guys! Have any of y'all been to the Dinosoar Valley State Park in Glenn Rose? I know it sounds funny but it's a park that runs along a beautiful river. There's an amazing clear water swimming hole that's perfect for mermaid-ing. The water there isn't running so fast that it'll sweep you away either, it's perfect!

I was just looking at a state park directory to try to find a few more swimming holes and I saw Dinosaur park too! I was thinking of suggesting it too! There are dinosaur tracks in the river! I was only wondering how fast the river was.

what a cool suggestion ^^

I wonder whom would volunteer though? If whoever hosts has to introduce everyone and take care of the newbies, I would imagine that would take away a good chunk of their mermaid time during the meet. Much respect for the mer willing to take all that responsibility though! ^^

A_Koi_Mermaid

Well, it could the first time but after that we will know each others names already so it would just be the newbies. As far as taking care of the newbies I more just meant making sure they are safe and if they need any help. We could obviously trade who hosts each time too if we wanted. Mers usually stop arriving about an hour into the meet so the rest of the time is free. Especially if the group as a whole knows there is a newbie and can all help them.

that makes sense ^^ again, much respect to the mers whom are outgoing enough for that, whomever volunteers to specifically do the 'host' part of what you suggested, I mean. I know on a personal not that I am a shy mer and wouldn't be up to any type of host position ^^

(maybe any mers here whom sees this and are up for it can volunteer for being a host? just thought I would mention it aloud for the mers considering it. ooh, or anyone whom would wanna do that can post in the current or next meet up facebook event if they are able?)

I volunteer as tribute~
When I'm at the meet, I have no problem introducing everyone! I know what it's like to be shy. So if everyone's comfortable with that, I really don't mind. And as for helping the newbies, if I'm just in my monofin (which I normally am), I can always help. It's only when we're in our tails that we end up getting swarmed by little ones and their parents. Haha :)

Lone Star Mer-Meet news!

We have the Hamilton Springs reserved for Saturday, July 16th from 9 am to 1 pm!

Also, if anyone wants photos from Corrinda Raine Underwater Photography, she will be developing photography packages for whoever wants their photos taken there. Keep in mind that she is one of the best underwater photographers in the state and she needs to know how many people are going to know how much she needs to charge. So please RSVP with me and let me know whether you want photos!

A mer who shall not be named brought her daughter who is 9, and a 14-year-old with her to the meet. She claimed this 14-year-old was there to learn mermaiding, but in reality she was there to babysit the 9-year-old. The mer did not watch either of them the entirety of the meet and claimed she "did not want to play mom, while mermaiding." The 14-year-old was pushy and defiant, and broke a lot of pool rules while we were there. And the mer apparently did not bring a change of clothes for her 9-year-old daughter so she was in the locker room freezing in her swimsuit while the 14-year-old tried to figure out how to help her. She told us this angrily and we suggested putting her swimsuit in the swimsuit dryer so that she at least could be dry! It was a stressful situation for everyone paying attention, which was apparently everyone other than the mer who brought these poor children. So now, children are not permitted to be brought to meets by mers. I cannot stand to see children neglected, and it's not the job of other mers to supervise them.

Okay, this seems like a case of one bad apple. In any given situation if people aren't watching children it is a problem, however that doesn't mean everyone would behave the same way. I wasn't there, I don't know all the details but there is a lot of ways to handle this situation. I understand this is a problem, but I would hate for well behaved young mers to not be allowed because of this one incident.

It absolutely was, but I don't recommend anyone mermaiding under the age of 18 anyway for safety purposes without adult supervision. And I can't guarantee that these children will be supervised. If someone has a young mermaid that they'd like to bring and train, please let me know and maybe we can work something out but for now, this is the rule for this specific monthly meet until we can find a solution to the issue.

Of course, I'm always open to suggestions if anyone has a better easy to ensure that all children and minors will be supervised.

I agree with the new rule. Some of us are parents, and Mermaid Meet-ups are a way for us to socialize with other Mermaids. When I'm not at a meet up, I take my daughter and let her Mermaid. If another person in my Mer group brings their children, and doesn't watch them, I feel like if I don't watch them, then who will, especially if said parent makes it obvious they aren't watching. That being said, this specific Meet-Up is once a month, and there are usually 3 other weekends that kids can mermaid. I don't think asking for one kid free weekend is asking too much. Now, to add a little more detail to Lotus' post, this specific Mer brings her kids to EVERY meet up, and doesn't watch them. This is a consistent behavior. My kids know when I say I'm going to the monthly meet up, they aren't allowed, or invited. I really think unless you have witnessed said incident(s), you really don't know just how severe, or deep this situation goes. For just one Saturday a month I don't want to be responsible for kids! Strangers kids at the pool are different. Mermaids are essentially family, and that includes their kids, and I doubt you would be able to have a clear conscience if you witnessed this, and didn't say/do something. Again, this is just my opinion

I don't know why anyone would feel excluded for having to find a sitter for one day, or asking their SO for a one day break. If they cant find a sitter, and have to miss one meet up, its not gonna be the end of the world. Lotus, maybe you should make an anonymous voting system, that way people can weigh in their opinions on it, without worrying about hurting feelings?

Would we want to include someone who's openly neglecting their children for the rest of us to worry about..? Sure, we can't physically stop anyone from coming to meets, but we can ask them but to return with their children unless they have someone designated to watch said children. If they persist, then we'd ask them not to return and explain it's because it's dangerous for the children and stressful for the other mers.

I don't like leaving people out. I come from a community where everyone is included and we welcome everyone. Just because one person did a bad thing shouldn't damn everyone else.

Mainly it is the point of what happens when someone brings a child, teen, or whatever do you kick them out of a public area? Do you cause a scene? Do you risk making the pod and possibly mermaids as a whole look like dicks and unfriendly to kids and those with them?

I think a warning would be more reasonable than an absolute ban. Like if incidents with children happen again, then we should consider a ban or something. But not immediately, outright, due to one person.

Lotus the Mermaid
06-01-2016, 03:24 PM
Then, perhaps someone could let the mother of these children know that she should only get a warning after I've spoken to her and had to explain to her three times why she can't just leave her 9-year-old daughter unattended. I don't think anyone realizes how much I and many other mers had to go through this past weekend so forgive my frustration. I'm not trying to come off as unreasonable. :(

It was not rash and I had to go through the process of speaking with 4 different mers in two days because of this incident. It was a difficult decision but we'll keep the vote going. I'll privately message the other mers in the pod and ask them as well what their vote is. I appreciate you both being honest with me.

If not a warning then why not focus on that one person not being allowed to bring her children, instead of banning everyone? Altho I do sympasize with her cuz sometimes you just can't find a sitter. That's life. Granted I don't know all of what happened at the meet, what happened with one person should not destroy the chance for others with kids to lose out on fun.

Trade Winds

I am also curious about the other mer's side of the story, if we really want to be fair instead of a one sided story. But more concerned about banning children as a whole, and what kind of scene would happen if we tell off a mer with children in a public area.

Lotus the Mermaid
06-01-2016, 04:01 PM
So far, after explaining the incident to our Facebook DFW mers in the pod, we're at seven Yays and two Nays. There are only a handful of us in this pod, but I'll keep the voting up for another day or so to make sure everyone gets a say. So far, most of the mers are more than okay with the "no children" policy. In case of emergencies or in the event that another guardian is present to watch the child, exceptions can of course be made.

And I would never resolve an issue by making a scene. We're all adults here. I hope that helps with any remaining concerns. :)

If we banned one Mers kids we have to ban all of them it's only fair for everyone. Yes you can't always find a babysitter because life BUT we always hold it at the end of the month there is plenty of time to make plans about who is going to watch the kids. Its 1 day of the month we want it to be just adults. There will be other days that we will make for kids & minors that are interested in learning about mermaids and want to be mermaids but they still MUST have a parent or guardian there just in case. It's not like we are trying to just ban children forever here, just one day seems fair enough to me.

There was more than 1 person that witnessed what happened at the meet so it's not one sided at all. There have actually been a few reports that this isn't the first time that a Mermaid hasn't watched their children or whomever they bring that's not an adult. There wouldn't be any "telling off" if a Mer did bring their kids to a public pool that's not how we work or what kind of people we are. We are all adults here.

Mary Marine

Jeez I disappear for a while and miss everything!

On this issue of allowing or banning minors from meet ups:

I can see both sides of the issue. On the one hand we want everyone to feel welcome to this group, on the other we want people to be safe. So here's my compromise:

If you are in a mermaid tail, you are physically unable to watch your child. Your legs are restricted and you're spending most of the time underwater holding your breath where you can't see them. Lifeguards are not baby sitters. Therefore, if you are tail swimming and have children with you then you must bring another adult (that means 18+) to watch them for you.

Outright banning minors leaves young mermaids up crap creek with no paddle. I don't know if we currently have any teens in the group, but we might in the future. Therefore, if you are a tail swimming minor you must bring a legal guardian with you. I know a 16 year old is perfectly capable of driving themselves to the pool and swimming by themselves without supervision, but if something went wrong we need a parent there for legal reasons. This is to protect our scaly butts from a nasty news story.

Lastly, it looks like we need to establish a code of conduct for our meets to post as a sticky. If a mermaid is causing problems within the community requesting they stop attending meets is reasonable, but we need to outline what is considered a problem/offense. Would the mer be banned from the next met? All meets? How many strikes do they get before they are out?

Then we need to enforce these rules somehow. Mernetwork has rules regarding harassment, but proof must be provided such as a screen shot. We'd have to contact a moderator to ask if a member's account can be suspended/restricted/banned in response to an in person incident. We should also look into the local pool rules. It sound like the main objection against the mer in question causing problems is a safety one, in which case we may be able to have the lifeguards ask her to leave. I know this doesn't help with lakes and rivers, but it is something to consider.

TL;DR: Personally I don't have kids and don't want any for a long time, but what I don't want to see is this group become unwelcoming to teen mermaids. Ban parent mers from bringing their kids, but lets not ban minors altogether. Allow teens in tails to come as long as they have a legal guardian.

Mermaid Lunette

i think there might be something no one else is considering? or maybe people have but they just have not brought it up?

either way, i am gonna throw it out there.

everyone is open to another mer-meet being made once a month that is opened to kids. For the mers trully worried about kids and minors being left out, maybe one of you that is up for it should make another event once a month that is open for all ages?

Lotus makes the events each month, she sets up the date and location and generally she takes on the responsibility of making sure the pod is aware of the meet and even trying to make sure as many mers feel included at the event as possible, so it seems unfair to give her all this responsibility and her do all this work no one is paying her to do, and then say she can't make one simple rule?

although, she is a fair mer so upon request she is still handiling the situation democratically.

I know i was very uncomfortable at that meet because of the kids, i worried about their safety and did not have much fun because of their unsupervised behavior which could be considered very rude.

so, it would be nice to just go to an event and be myself instead of having to worry "will this kid's situation be like the last? do i need to watch them because no one else will?" if there were two seperate events then great, i can prepare myself to be around kids (maybe even bring my step daughter) and then i can also go to a meet and just be myself.

however, someone ELSE needs to step up and make that kid friendly event. No one whom is uncomfortable should be asked to be in charge of or responsible for a event they are uncomfortable with. so, if someone wants to take the responsibility and the work of planning a once a month mer meet that is kid friendly then they by all means should, because that means that kids and minors can be encouraged and welcomed and the adult mers there prepared to be around kids, and then also at the adult meet mers can just be themselves and not subconsiously see any of the kids as their responsibility.

so whoever wants to host a minor friendly meet at a different time once a month? please do, i think everyone would welcome it.

please do not imply or suggest that someone clearly against the idea be asked to plan, host, and create the event. (not saying anyone has outright suggested it, just saying this because i know she might feel pressured to make this second said event because people keep suggesting it to her and she has said a couple times that any other mer can by all means do it themselves.)

Mary Marine
06-01-2016, 07:50 PM
Lunette, you raise some good points.

While I hate to exclude kids, that does seem to be the direction most of the pod wants. Safety has to take a priority over inclusion, although I hope if a teen mer pops up in this thread we could see about making an exception if they have a guardian with them. To be honest I don't really want kids around while I'm tail swimming, but I didn't want to discriminate against parent mers. But please please please let us consider allowing minors in tails with a legal guardian if one wants to attend a meet!

A second kid friendly meet is a good idea, though I wonder how many mers would be interested? I suppose if we get more parent mers that could become a regular thing, plus if a mer can't attend the adult met they could go to the all ages one. Or both! Double the tail time.

On a differently note, has a location been set of the June meet? Now that the weather is warming up I'm hoping for a lake meet. I'll be sure to request off from work so I can make it. I can't afford the trip to Austin in July, but local day trips I can do!

Teen mers WILL be an issue at some point. Mary, you may remember 13 or 14 yr old Loki who was going to come to the state meet in 2014? S/he never actually got to go due to timing issues, but we were all down for it.

I am ALWAYS up for creating events. In case no one was around or didn't notice, it was ol' Trade Winds who has tried NUMEROUS times after the 2014 state meet to make something happen in the area, including these monthly meets (*points to the OP of this very topic*) until certain things and mersons happened. Obviously we are more active now so organizing things hopefully wouldn't be too difficult. But before I even do a thing I wonder if anyone is even down for a kid friendly meet (instead of 'oh hey that would be cool' and never explore it) or if it would be a bust as planned meets of years ago.

I'll be the first to suggest that someone else take the mantle for a kid-friendly meet and maybe even start a different thread for them. We've had 8 Yays and 3 Nays and anyone else voting in the future doesn't seem interested in joining the meets.

Pretty sure the rule is staying in place. Just FYI.

Back to this, I bet everywhere is flooded or about to be, if we want an outdoor meet. Burger's Lake is where me and Mary hung out last yr during young days of the monthly meets. Can't say it would be suitable for a bigger meet tho as it is pretty small. Apparently Dinosaur Valley is flooded.

And if anymer is for SURE wanting a kid friendly meet so we don't have exclusion issues...let us know and I'll start whipping that to life

You are all taking this WAY too far out of context and trying to make certain people look like the bad guys and I really don't appreciate that. The whole point of this vote is for the ONCE A MONTH DFW MERMEET to be kid & minor free. It's once a month guys, I don't see anywhere that one single person has said we don't want kids & minors around for any reason all the time. We all would like and agreed ONE DAY. Yes we know there are going to be kids around us but the whole point is that we wont have to worry about any of the Pod's kids or minors that they bring and feel like we need to be babysitters and worry whether or not their parent is watching them etc.

The Mer that the situation happened with last time is completely okay with not bringing her children to this meet from now on.

This whole situation is getting a bit out of hand and we all need to take a step back here. Everyone of us here doesn't have problems with kids or being around them usually. We aren't trying to make the Pod Kid Free, We are only trying for ONE DAY. I would love to see a Kid & Teen MerMeet where specific Mers host and help out those that want to learn. I have NO ISSUE teaching young ones safety, tips, and to let them be a Mermaid for a day. I would help out in anyway that I can.
