Have you hear of Uber? It's a pretty nifty transportation service; they can locate you by GPS via your phone and you can request one via an app. I usually use their 'UberX' which is an economy car and it's really reasonably priced. I've use Uber in many cities and multiple states & it's awesome!

As far as the monthly meetups go I can't commit to anything on a regular basis as my schedule changes so much but generally Sundays in early afternoon are best.

I just got a second job so I am unsure what my availability will be, but for locations I know of a few indoor pools with public swimming hours:

1. Heritage Senior Center in Irving http://www.cityofirving.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/Heritage-Aquatic-Center-61
At it's deepest the pool is only 5 ft deep, but it has a wheel chair ramp that is very mermaid friendly and it's only $1.50 to get in.

2. North Lake College in Irving http://www.northlakecollege.edu/services-and-resources/health-and-wellness/Pages/pool.aspx
More than twice the size of the Heritage pool and much deeper at the diving end. Also $1.50 to swim.

3. Bachman Indoor Pool in Dallas http://www.dallasaquatics.org/100/Bachman-Indoor-Pool
Haven't swam here, but it looks very nice! Downside is you have to buy a City of Dallas Recreation Pass to use the pool ($15 for residents, $25 for non residents, good for a year) PLUS the $3 day pass.

All of these locations have crazy hours because they have classes and other things going on.

There is a state wide meet up planned for June 6 and 7 in the Corpus Christi area. That is in a thread entitled Coastal Mermaid meet up. I'd still love to host a meet up in Arlington, maybe March? How does Arlington work for you guys? Indoor pool. Cost would be $5/mer and I could rent the pool fairly cheap so we'd have it to ourselves on a weekend evening (Friday, Saturday or Sunday after 5.)

And I really want to come to the swim so whichever date the swim is then I'll go to Sherwood the other weekend. But since sherwood will be on Saturday and Sunday I have to ask off work. So kinda need to know more than just a week in advance so I can get my shift covered.

Ok so I had to make a decision and I'm going to be in Austin at Sherwood Forest Faire on March 7 and 8.
So my only date to make it to the swim meet up is now Sunday March 15th......fingers crossed.....I really wanna come.
My tail needs another outing in deeper water.

I just called. The head lifeguard is going to call me back, but the guy I spoke to said he'd seen some people "do the mermaid thing" before, so it would probably be okay. I was sure to stress that we have swam in tails before and know how to do it safely. :) If everything is good to go, I'd be up for March 20th!

I just got off the phone with the head lifeguard and tail swimming is allowed! Now we just need to decide when to go.

It looks like Fridays are family night, so we probably don't want to go then because we will be mobbed by children. Saturday they are open 1-5pm and Sunday from 3-5pm. Admission is $6.00 unless you have a facility card.

Did we want to try for the weekend of the 21st/22nd or is that too soon? For me the sooner the better, I have literally been dreaming about tail swimming with other mers!

Mercademy sounds so fun. I could never afford such a thing. I'll have to learn as I go. I can't really do underwater swimming anyways since I have to keep my glasses on in order to able to see. And Sundays are terrible for me right now until my schedule changes back to 3 days off anyways.

The pool was nice and warm and not too crowded, though can I say Enora's fluke is even bigger in person?! Seriously, she wins the biggest fluke contest. And AmbrGlows' new FinFun monofin is much better than the old polycarbonate ones that were so floppy. So awesome swimming with my mer-sisters! :group hug:

Anyway, I wanted to suggest the pool at North Lake College in Irving as the location of our April meet. The pool is VERY large with a nice deep end and not crowded, plus admission is only $1.50. Seahorse Mystery and I have swam there so they are mer friendly. Anyone else have location suggestions?

I won't have access to the pool in Plano until May. If we do May 31, 5:30-8:30pm, my students will be wrapping up their first round of classes, and I am having a professional photographer take publicity photos of them. You guys could join in! $25 gets you pool time with the students (you'll just join our class activities and/or swim around as we work and individual photography sessions happen poolside) plus 1 edited digital image and the option to buy more photos if you want them.

My April just got swamped, but I can def offer and participate Sunday May 31 in Plano.

Gosh darn it, I am determined to get the April meet up and swimming somehow. Unless anyone has other pools to suggest, the 3 mer-friendly pools I know of are Hugh Smith in Arlington, North Lake College in north Irving, and the Heritage Aquatic Center in south Irving.

Here's a new idea to kinda combine with monthly meets...for those in DFW and surrounding areas, who can't make it to the yearly meet up down south for whatever reason, how interested are you in a weekend long, local meet this summer? I don't think there's any clear water around here, but I have no prob whatsoever having a massive mermaid meet at Joe Pool, Eagle Mountain, or whatever places you have in mind (no pools! somewhere natural and outside!). Any takers? I know it's kinda late to start this, but maybe we can plan something! Otherwise, I guess we can stick to a monthly meet thing.

With that in mind, where does everyone like to swim in the summer? I think we should start pre-planning a few months ahead of time if we want to make this a reoccurring event.

Tbh the appeal off your lake house beats out Clear Springs. It's up to you. If we do, we will have to do a reservation-style thing for those who plan to go, and cap it at 10 or whatever number you are most comfortable with. I love the idea of having all that space to ourselves. I grew up on a lake and miss that freedom.

Idk what costs would be involved if we go that route. I will bring my own food since I'm vegan and won't touch anything other people cook, probably.

I also suggest meeting everyone who will be at your house. That way you know you can trust them. Mary Marine can assure you I am safe. We went to last year's pod meet together. :P

In the mean time we will need to watch the water levels.

There's a state wide meetup in the Corpus Christi area June 6 and 7. There is Mercademy in the DFW area August 3-8 (www.TheMercademy.com), and a Texas Convention is in the planning stage in far west Texas for September.

If we prefer a deep pool, we could always come to my outdoor pool in Arlington. IT'S FREE! :-) It is a chlorine pool. Deep and shallow ends. We can do anytime we want. The address is 2430 Henderson Dr. Arlington 76010. Edit: Pool side photo shoot is also available here for $25/person for a 30 minute session.

End time would be 9pm. And the outdoor pool temp is COLD but my tail keeps me warm, especially if I keep moving. I don't have a thermometer, but I'm guessing that water temp is in the 60s, maybe low 70s.

So mers, unless you own (or want to rent) a mask and snorkel, don't go to Clear Springs. I'm going to dig up my mask/snorkel and plan to be there on the 20th with my dad. Though which a reply like that, I half wonder if I'll be told to take off my tail anyway. :doh:

Finally got a reply back from Clear Springs:

I think we need to try calling them again, constantly until they answer they phone. I am not okay with this email response. That said, I do have a mask, but I have to see if I have a snorkel around somewhere. I don't mind wearing it the whole time since my vision is so poor anyway.

Monofins are fins, and tails are just a distraction from the fact we're wearing a fin. Call it a part of the swimsuit. Who knows. Buuuut I think we should all just try calling constantly.

If Clear Springs doesn't allow tails, doesn't give us a clear response, or never answers the phone, I vote for not going there at all. If they can't do their job, they aren't gonna get my business. I wouldn't mind heading to Joe Pool or some other lake instead.

Honestly? This place makes their money from people who scuba dive. It's a scuba park. Aside from the divers' family who come along to snorkel, they probably don't give a crap about anyone who isn't diving and don't want their water cluttered up with people who aren't diving. Now, there must be people who go there just to snorkel or freedive, but there is ZERO mention of that on their website. I'm really getting the impression that anyone other than divers are grudgingly admitted. Now, maybe if I got a person on the phone they'd turn out to be really welcoming once I explained what exactly mermaiding is, but who can say? I'll keep calling, but at this point I'd almost rather just go to a closer lake, forget the mask and snorkel, and not care of about water visibility.

That's pretty much how I feel. If they don't reply, Enora can be our mer-guinea pig when she goes. Then we can go from there. Anyone else wanna give input? If not I'd say just hit Joe Pool next weekend if we can't get an answer. I went there last year around this time before the pod meet and had no prob swimming and whatnot...plus it's closer and only $5 per car or person- don't recall which. I don't really care about visibility. I just wanna swim.

I finally found their facebook page. Idk how I missed it all this time. It's on the front page of their antique website. Altho I am not sure exactly how to phrase 'do you allow beautiful women to swim as mermaids lol' (j/k). Sometimes Facebook pages are better to use.

Apparently my dad used to dive at Clear Springs. He went back after his certification expired because he wanted to snorkel and the lady who worked there grudgingly admitted snorkling was allowed, but he could tell that anyone not diving is unwelcome. He also mentioned that the visibility is only that clear at lower depths, so where we would be swimming would still be kinda green and murky. Better than other lakes, but not the clear water I was hoping for.

So yeah, no Clear Springs for me. Seahorse Mystery and I was muddy lake mermaids anyway! :p What do you say, good ol' murky Joe Pool Lake on the 20th or 21st?

I am down for Joe Pool, obviously. I changed the meet info to there. Same day. Open at 6am, apparently. I vote for getting there super early to avoid looooooooooooong, out-to-the-highway lines and decent parking. They have a nice beach in the Lynn Creek area, and a good deep end near the wavebreakers where there won't be many people in the way. So you will find me (and Mary too I hope) at Lynn Creek.

July 12 won't work for me. The 5th is probly a bad idea too since it's the day after the 4th o' July (I imagine it'd be hella busy like everywhere else).

July 18th, anyone? Clear Springs, maybe, if things go well for Enora if/when she goes Sunday. Otherwise I think another trip to Joe Pool or some other lake would work. I've always wanted to hit up Eagle Mountain but I still haven't after two years of living here. *shrug*

Anyway, as for this month, attached is a pic where you will find me and Mary Marine at Joe Pool/Lynn Creek! There is a beach protected by a wave breaker circled in red/to the left. Parking is right behind it. There's also a non-sandy beach that I think lacks a wave breaker, to the right. I prefer rough water and high waves, so I wanna be over there. Not sure how well others can swim in turbulent water tho, so mostly we'll have to decide when we all get there. I swam on the other side of the beach's wavebreaker last year, so if the weaker swimmers want to hang there we can chill on either side of the wavebreaker. Obviously don't go too far out from the wavebreaker unless you want to get shredded by a boat.

Bad news, both Loyd park and Lynn park are not allowing swimming right now due to flooding. I'm hunting for another location right now, will post what options I find.

Where are you finding this information? According to http://www.lake-grapevine.com/murrell-park/ all the parks are still closed due to high waters. My cousin lives just 3 blocks from the lake off. It's been pretty hard to find current information on the parks, the city websites have incomplete information on exactly which parks are closed/open. Some are open for boating but not swimming. I also can't find a straight answer on if swimming is only allowed in designated areas or if you can still swim in the lake, the park is just closed.

My cousin said the city of Grapevine has blocked all lake access roads near her and made some catastrophe declaration about the lake and creeks.
