I'm re-vamping my orange spandex tail and I have a lot of surface area to cover and i was thinking about getting a big bottle of acrylic paint in the colors I need and mixing it with the fabric paint medium to make the fabric paint... (I might just order a small 2oz bottle and test it out first)
Has anyone used a fabric paint medium mixed with acrylic paint to make it fabric paint?
stuff like this: http://www.joann.com/martha-stewart-6oz-tintable-fabric-medium/11386695.html#q=Fabric+Paint+Medium&start=2
there are a few other brands but this one is the biggest bottle and actually say the mixing ratios in the online description.
Would it work?

I've done that when funds couldn't warrant the price of proper fabric paint. Worked completely fine for me. Fabric medium is a softener/bonding type stuff to make acrylic more flexible and adhere a little better to fabric.

I think the stuff i got was made by liquitex though.

Hopefully it works for you ^_^

from past non-tail fabric painting experience, you need to slip a stretcher into your tail (i was thinking of using cardboard) which will give you better control on the fabric, and also keep the paint from bleeding through to the other side.

(and when i say cardboard, i'll probably line it with something else non-porous because i'm paranoid.)

I just bought a couple of fabric paints that come in a spray bottle and mixed just a bit more water in them. I tried it on another tail of mine and it worked perfectly, plus those bottles are super cheap and you don't have to buy any thinners.

When I feel lazy I usually use the tulip brand fabric spray paint. If you get them one at a time you can use the 40% off coupons to make them cheaper.

Yeah, that's the brand I used. If you're careful with it, it can make some pretty cool designs!
