So I've been stalking for a while, as I'm not very talkative even in person, but I wanted to genuinely become part of this inspiring community and thought I'd start out on the right foot.

My name is Kathryn, I'm 27, and I still want to be a singing mermaid when I grow up. My background is in teaching English and Spanish, but I'm a sucker for fashion, engineering/crafts, and anything about the sea. Unfortunately, as a result of growing up in the Midwest and going to pools only 4 ft. deep, I never really thought to actually PRACTICE swimming. After we moved to San Francisco, I didn't swim AT ALL (woe is me, I thought, I FINALLY live blocks from the ocean and it's totally cold and USELESS! I thought CA was all palm trees and sunshine!) Now I'm in LA, and now that there's a reason to go to the pool again, I've discovered I get winded halfway down an Olympic-sized lane. So ashamed...

Anywho, I'm practicing every day after work, and have played around with getting/making a tail ever since I saw Splash (best I could do in my younger years was put my feets in a hairtie ). Since I'm a firm believer that, in the creative world, "if you wan' som'ting don' right, you godda do it you'self," I think I've gotta dive () right in and try my hand at it.

While I'm currently a little short on cash (student loans:thumbdown:), I'm certainly looking forward to following all your progress - creatively and professionally - and getting to know you all better. You have no idea (well, actually, I bet you do!) how I felt when I learned a community like this existed!

All the best to everyone!

uuuhh.. welcome I guess. If you are short on cash and full of crafting talent making your own tail surely is the way to go.

Wish you good luck.

Haha (a belated) Welcome to you! This seems weird, as technically I joined mernetwork after you, and I'm the one welcoming you.... oh well :) Are you planning on making a tail, or saving up and buying one?

Nana and Kishiko - ;)

Most definitely making my own. I've got some grid-lined interfacing and craft foam still lying around to make a prototype before investing in neoprene and silicone rubber rolls/sheets. In fact, if it works like I think it will, I want to see if I can't start tailmaking for others!

Already said good luck. Seems like you already have a plan though.

side note:

uuuhh.. welcome I guess - what is the point of even posting that?

Welcome to the forum! I was a terrible swimmer before I got my tail. Actually, before I got my current tail even. The first few tails I owned just didn't do it for me, but having that competitor monofin made a huge difference and I glide around with ease! Practicing is great to build your confidence. I will say the more expensive monofins do make a difference for those of us who arent the best swimmers. I've had to cope with student loans too, I was actually able to recently pay one off totally. I've got about 15k left which isnt that much when you consider I went to university for 7 years! I worked like 3 jobs through most of it too... but my programs were expensive!

I made it work with debt, Im sure you can too. :) there's loads of resources here!!!
