Found these whilst looking for something else. They're transparent, thick and looks like it can be spray painted. Kinda reminds me of the scales they made for the H2O and Mako Mermaids tails.

And these... Not polycarbonate scales. I wish I could change the title to Mermaid Scales.

You can buy these ones by weight.

Oooo nice, thanks for the find. the only thing ive found with plastics as you need to find a glue that is waterproof and will adhere to what ever material your gluing them to. But you could use these to make a silicone scale patten instead of the foam circles. i wonder if they send international?

Or you could sew them on ;)

For the polycarbonate ones I believe those are TOO see-thru, there was a test thread somewhere around here with examples so you could see through them and it looked kinda funny. If you could get them to be more foggy, they'd be awesome. They'd probably still be awesome as is, I'll let you know if I find the thread...

Still looks kinda neat, but I'm pretty sure that polycarbonate is very close to what she used in this thread and would look likely very close to hers.

Well one could paint the base in abstract colors or something then lay on the scales row by row, lightly paint scales in between rows etc. Just like the mako tails.

You also need time and a lot of resources I think.

This is the same stuff im working with right now, but Im going for crazy realistic. like perfect replica of a fish. Been working on it for years and the plastic is indeed polycarbonate which a lot of objects are made of it. Painting it has been very tricky and is still nowhere near good enough. =/
acrylic sucks
spray paint isn't working well enough
haven't tried anything new yet.

That's the same thing as what i do with my face scales actually. here is a pic. looks better when they blend into the hairline 23473
Its a great idea, difficult, but well worth it, I think. =)

Have you tried the Krylon for plastic paint? It has a touch of solvent in it and it etches into the plastic surface a little so the paint will adhere without scraping off.

I used plastic paint but it looked funny and felt rough. I thought it would stick well but i have a few scales chip on me. icky. maybe it was too thick?

Odette, are your face scales glued together into a sheet or placed on the skin individually? Do you use eyelash adhesive to adhere them, or something else? How are they in water?

I've been thinking for awhile of doing sequin scales on my neck.

You can use that or liquid bandage or spirit gum. Whichever is easiest to get a hold of. Blend it up to the jaw line and that will look great! color is applied first, but I stopped adding color since from far away, it looks a bit like dirt.

Liquid bandage! That's genius!

I learned that from Phoenix Mermaid. =) She is a smart cookie.

Cool! i'm going to have to try this. I can make neck scales from the same sequins I'll be using in my tail.
