so, ive been an aspiring Mermaid for a long time now. i made my first tail last year, but then didnt think it through and couldnt figure out how to color it (it was plain black cuz thats the only fabric i could get in the lycra/spandex). anyways, so i had to put it on hold for a while cuz i'm a college student. I'm rapidly trying to pursue this thing though cuz it's my dream!!! Here is what i have to work with though:

I have an all black mermaid tail made of lycra (like spandex). i would use this, but i dont know how to color it. wondering if i should put silicone on it, but i have to go through coloring it and all of that. so thats my first option.

I also have a tail in the making. not sure what kind of fabric its made of, just something average but sturdy. i havent tested it in the water yet. it's a pretty blue color though. i was thinking if it's good in the water, then i could sew scales on it, and use fabric paint for the fluke??

I eventually want a neoprene tail, but that will take some saving. could i recycle an old wetsuit? would that over complicate things?

and right now i'm trying to decide if i can or should cuz my finis monofin to shape it. ive never done this so i'm worried i'll ruin it, so i could use advice on that too. its just hard to get a fluke shape around a manatee shaped fin ya know?

i'd appreciate any input on any questions. i'm really trying to pursue this and really need experienced hands opinions. Thanks so much and i can't wait to hear from you all!!!

A lot of this is answered in the tailmaking index, but I wouldn't recommend cutting a wave. They can be extended with zip ties and gorilla tape (not duct tape) or with plastic sheeting and plastic rivets. There's stuff on it in tailmaking threads but I'm on my phone so I can't link it. What I did was basically lay down these monster zip ties along the edge of the fin as a skeleton and then covered both sides in a layer of gorilla tape. It's held up really well. You can see my tail in pictures on my profile to see how it turned out. :)
