Hello Everybody!
A few years ago i bought my first mermaid tail at Magictail in Germany.
I have now decided to make a sequins tail and top.
At the moment i have 3 fabric tails: My green one i bought at Magic Tail, a blue one custom made for me and a holographic purple one custom made for me.
I live in the Netherland and sequins are pretty much impossible to find here so i wanted to order from c cartwright.
Luckily my mother in law lives in America (my boyfriend is from America) so she ordered the sequins for me and will ship it to me (this saves me money cause i won't be needing to pay customs this way)
I wanted to work on all 3 tails with sequins but since i joined this forum and read up on information i found out that i don't have nearly enough for 2 tails!
I think i ordered 13.000 sequins in total for 3 tails and 3 tops .....yeah......not gonna happen....lol
Since the total amount including shipping will already be quite a lot at the moment i have decided to just work on 1 tail and top for now.
Thinking just one tail will take a lot of my time already as it is.
Since i am not sure if i can work on my green one since it is a bit old and the fabric is getting thinner i have decided to not work with that one but work on the blue tail first.
The colors i ordered are different shades of green, blue, purple, pink. Then also gold, silver and holographic mixed colors.
I think i can design a tail with those colors. (will include a photo of the blue tail which is just a basic blue tail since it was meant to be painted and filled with sequins)
I do have questions though that i a hoping you may be able to answer:
Is it better to have a zipper in the back with a sequins tail? Even if it is spandex or lycra?
I also bought some plastic floor matting to work as fringes.
The plastic is not just a flat piece of plastic but can best be described as a corderoy pants type which i think will work great.
In my opinion sowing would be best for that, but do any of you have experience with it and prefer glueing versus sowing?
My tails are open at the bottom so you can put the monofin in and take it out afterwards.
Is this the way to do it? Or is it better to leave the monofin inside the tail?
The monofins i have are from Magictail in Germany.
And there is the question of sowing the sequins on or doing it by hand.
I will most likely do a test run with some left over blue fabric to see if sowing them will work and to compare which looks better (will off course share the results with all of you)
I saw that Hannah Mermaids tail has a belt on the inside, what would that be for? Is that needed?
I have more questions and am sure i will have even more as this journey progresses.

What do you think of the colors i chose?
I feel they will work nice together, but would love to hear some opinions :)23560

A fellow Dutch mermaid? Yay! So great to meet you! Thank you for joining me on this journey. Today i showed my mom the plan for the tail and she is going to help me as well.
I am sure we will have lots of hurdles on our way but it will be fun and rewarding at the same time:)

On one hand it is sad that there are so few mermaids in the Netherlands but hey...look on the bright side....it makes us even more special in the Netherlands :)

Yups, we are kinda special then, aren't we?
I know/knew two other dutch mermaids with homemade tails at my monovinclub.
But suddenly then didn't show up every training, haven't seen them for awhile now.
Last time I saw them they were talking with a guy who wanted to hire them for a event.
Never heard how that ended.
Wish I knew if they are still using their tail, I'd love buy one of their tails.
Do you have a design template of your tail?
I love seeing the designs other mers come up with.

@ Mermaid Chrystal Shimmer: I love that idea of meeting at a pool one day! :)
@ Claudia: Thank you for joining us on this journey! :)
@Cowgirlmermaid: I don't have a design yet just the basic fabric.
I don't know if i want to cover the entire thing in sequins or paint the part where the monofin is and cover the rest of the tail in sequins.
Also there is the question of sowing it on or using the E6000 glue i have heard others talk about.
I have soe left over fabric and will be doing some test runs on those with both sowing sequins, glueing sequins and painting on the fabric to see what works best for me and i will post the pro's and cons here off course to share it.
If all goes well and it turns out amazing then we will most likely start making them (also custom orders) for my fantasy shop/business and sell them. But that is only if i am 100% happy about the result :)

Don't worry, you didn't offend me.
Meeting up sounds fun. But I don't have tail, only a competitor-like monovin.
And Adalira, even it's not perfect, you could start selling them. Many mermaids would love to have a sequin tail.
and hey, practice makes perfect. :)

My mom is all excited in helping me and she came up with a bunch of ideas. So great to see her all excited about the project.
The sequins will be send to me most likely next week and after that it can take 2 to 3 weeks before the sequins arrive here.
I do have some sequins at home already so hopefully next week or this weekend i can start testing it out on some fabric (the sowing)
Also discussed the use of the E6000 glue for glueing them on with my mom and we will try that out as well, just have to buy some next week and test it out on fabric.
Can't wait to get started and share some results on here.
I will share a photo with you of me a few years ago when i had worked as a mermaid on an event.
As you can see i added just a few sequins here and there and some star fish on the tail.
The top i added some pearls and other decorations, oh and i made a decorated silver belt around it.
Nothing special or fancy and not really happy with it.
The once i will make now have to have that WOW factor and look fenomenal and be my own design.23633

Oooh, that's a magictail isn't it? Looks awesome with all the added sequins and belt.
I almost bought one 2 years ago. Don't know why I didn't, I think it had something to do with not enough money.
What are the colors of your sequins? Wich color would go where on your tail?
Maybe I can draw a design you like, if you want?
I have around 53 fluke shapes , and 20 color designs at home, I love drawing mermaid tails

The colors of the sequins i bought is different shades of blue, green and purple. Then some pink, gold and silver to highlight some parts.
I have never been good with designing.
Even when i have new ideas for fantasy art i don't design it first, i see it in my head and make it.
Don't know why designing something on paper isn't working for me.
The fluke shape will be the same as you see in the photo above of the green tail. I will however try to make a nice color design on the fluke, maybe ad some texture and off course fringes at the bottom and side of the tails.
Thank you for your offer to help with the design. For now i have several designs in my head that i think will be beautiful.
If i however feel at some point that they will not work out the way i wanted it too i will definitly take you up on your offer :)

But as said, that tail was made years ago when i just got started with being a mermaid and i had no idea what the possibilities are.
When you look at the tails of Hannah mermaid and mermaid Kariel you just see how amazing a mermaid tail and top can really be. That's why i want to make those kind of tails now cause their tails look like pure magic to me :)

I know their tails and they ARE magic! :) But i always wonder how solid and comfortable such a tail (complete maid of sequins) would be. My tail will have also sequins, but not that many and not on the bottom ._. (but my tail is just a "test").
Anyway, i am very interested in your projekt!
And by the way: the belt in hannahs tail is ,as far as i know, a lead belt. This is what divers have , so it is easier to stay under water (meeeh... my english is not good enough for that, i am sorry -.- i just hope you know what i mean!)

I am with you there, not sure if a tail completly made from sequins is too comfortable. So that's why i will paint the fluke and add some texture to the fluke (maybe with silicone) and just start trying it.

Depending on the fabric, sewing on will make it very uncomfortable. Thick fabric that will tug the knots in deeper/away from the skin, like neoprene, is fine. Same for glue, it's better with thick fabric. If your fabric is not thick, glue on with e6000. If you do full sequins, make sure to keep the fabric separated when drying, I had to tug mine apart a few times. Full sequin isn't uncomfortable for me, but you most defiantly need a zipper. I didn't put one in mine and it took me 15 minutes to get it on the first time. Oh, and expect a few little cuts and scrapes.

I agree with Meara, thick fabric is best with full sequins. I made one fully sequined bra, and it's very comfortable largely because the foam cushioning in the bra keeps sequins from poking through the fabric into my skin. I did have to trim the edges of some sequins around the armhole, because those hard edges were digging into my skin. On a tail, I think you wouldn't want the sequin edges at the waist to be above the edge of the fabric. Leave 1/4" of fabric at the top so it sits comfortably on your skin.

Thank you for the advices you guys! it is very very helpful.
I was thinking of maybe making an extra layer of fabric on the inside (if i decide to sow it on) to make it more comfortable.
The zipper is something i have been thinking about for a while now. And i think it is needed in a sequins tail.
I am still thinking of a way to sequins it completly to the top of the tail (the waist) and still having it feel comfortable. I have some ideas and it is all about testing them out :)

Remember that an extra layer of fabric will trap water and balloon up.

Thank you Raayvhen! Great tip!
Question: Has anyone of you used the E6000 glue to glue the sequins on? And if so, were you happy with the results? Any pro's and con's you can share with us?
A woman i know owns a big fabric store nearby and i will got here this week to see if she has any large zippers.
I will also bring the tails with me and see if she has any great tips and advice that could be of help :)

I used e6000 to glue on all my sequins. I am happy with how it turned out in the end. Make sure the fabric is clean and do not paint it before glueing. The glue will start to peel off. It's very time consuming and you will end up with glue hands and it takes a while to get off. When I glued I would just pore the glue out, smear it with a paint brush (this does ruin the brush) and dump the sequins on, wasn't going for a polished look and this technique most certainly does not give one. Be careful when glueing the body, if the glue seeps threw and you let it sit over night, you will spend a good hour tugging fabric apart (which luckily didn't ruin the fabric for me). I let mine sit for a week before getting it in the water. You will lose a lot of sequins no matter how much you shake them off. I went through about 25 big tubes (3 oz I think) of glue.
As as far as zippers go, try to find an industrial one for things like awnings and furniture, last longer and is more water resistant/less likely to rust. A trick they taught me in Fashion school is if you want to make it completely invisible, sew (and glue for us) the zipper in before you cut the fabric, careful not the get glue on the actual zipper part, then cut the fabric as close to the glue/seam as possible. Glue a thin strip of Velcro on the flap that will cover the zipper and the fabric piece of the zipper that is now exposed. You can decorate the flap to hide it. Once the tail is on and zipper closed, press the Velcro together to hide the zipper. This is not the same as an invisible zipper in fashion sewing or that seamstresses will know about.
If you find you have a lot of gapping in the back you can do a similar technique for a hook and eye set to close up the gap and still make it easy to get on. Make sure to test swim before you start decorating so you know you are still happy with the fit.

So, how's the tail coming along?
Ugh :( not at all. I don't think my sequins have been shipped out yet. There has been some sad family news in the US so therefor things have been posponed a bit.
Also i have been ill for a bit. I did manage to go to a store ( i know the owners) and ask if they had E6000 glue and he had no idea what i was talking about.
So i need to figure out what it is called over here. Even after i explained and showed the fabric he had no idea what i could use for that :(
So it has been on hold since then.
I am also in the middle of rehearsels to prepare the tour of our new shows so everything is very hectic and busy and the moment.
I did manage to get my Etsy shop up and running (Another thing that had to be done already months ago but due to custom orders i wanted to finish first it got posponed)
https://www.etsy.com/nl/shop/FairyMeShop
I am very thankful for all the information i got from all of you so far.
It has made me think a lot about what i want to do with the tail.
What i really wanted was a full sequins tail on the fabric but now i am not too sure about that anymore cause it may not be comfortable anymore after covering it with sequins.
The E6000 is an option but i am afraid the sequins will come off if i cover it completly with sequins and E6000 glue so that is a concern as well.
I do not want to cover the fluke with sequins but paint it.
Maybe painting the tails and covering them only half wirh sequins is an option.
So many things to consider and think about.

Lynsea: So far there hasn't been much damage even in high flex areas like ankles, heels, and knees. Of course some fall off because of the way I glued them on, some sequins are only attached by small amounts of glue, but because of the thick layer of sequins the loss isn't noticeable. But even Hannah's sewn on sequins are in constant need of repairs and replacement. I don't think you can make a sequin tail with out having loss of sequins over time.
Prince Calypso: there have been a few mer who have tried to do silicone with sequins and have found that the sequins will cut right through the silicone. I'm sure there is a way to do it but I think the risk of damage and cost of repairing it make it not worth it.

Hi Everyone, A quick update on the tails. The sequins have been shipped out from the US a few days ago. I have no idea when they will arrive here. Could be anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 weeks or even more. Hoping for sooner than later off course.
I did some online research and found several stores in the Netherlands selling E6000 glue but the problem is that the tubes with the glue are very small so i would need a lot of tubes. I am thinking of going to a specialised store and asking them for something similar but in bigger tubes/packaging.
And then something else i have been thinking about: I don't want to put sequins on the fluke but paint it and maybe add some texture on there.
Could i create texture with silicone over the fabric? Not all over the fluke but just some vertical stripes from where the fluke starts untill the bottom of the fluke.
Does anyone know if that works?
And then i want to paint it with an outdoor waterproof paint. But would i still need to iron it to seal it?

The sequins arrived today. I have made some photos of the bags.
I was a bit dissapoined though with the size. I meassured what it said on the website and thought they would be a little bit smaller than the sequins i already have at home....they are A LOT smaller though :-(
I took a photo of the sequins bags (the different colors) in daylight and with an extra light on it. And then took 1 sequins out of a bag to put next to the sequins i already have.

If you'd still like to use the sequins you got, I think scales of different sizes look very nice! There's lots of fish with scales of various sizes, and I think it makes a really neat look!

Like smaller scales at the waist and just above the fluke, to larger ones on the body of the tail. The color variation will also look realistically fishy. I love the look of tails that have the scale-shaped sequins like you have.

I have not been well the past weeks. The cold i got was worse than i thought and is still not gone.
Its about the 10th time i have been sick this year so it shows that my body is not doing well.
I am still dubbing over the size of the sequins because i really feel they are too small. I am afraid they will look like regular sequins (the round ones) in stead of giving the scale affect you get when you use the regular size ones i already have.
I don't have nearly enough of the regular size to mix it in with the small ones.
It is sad to have a picture in your mind of how it should look only to not be able to get there due to the wrong size sequins.
In total i spend over $100 on them plus shipping so i can't simply go order the right size somewhere else, even if i could find the right size.
There is also a lot going on in my personal life that is anything but fun so that is also holding me back right now.
So sorry you guys, this is not going how i wanted it to go at all.:(

Adalira, I know you had your heart set on larger sequins, but I think the ones you ordered are beautiful anyway! I plan on using the same ones when I make a sequin tail :) small scales take longer to glue on, but personally I like them better than larger ones! Maybe try gluing some on just to see how you like the look. And, even if you decide you don't want to use them on your tail, you could use them on a top instead, or some accessories, or even re-sell them to someone else here on the site.
Don't lose heart! There are always options, and like Cowgirl said, things will always work out in the end! :)

I have never simply given up on things and i am not about to start now.
I will have to start looking into the E6000 glue cause all i see in the Netherlands are small tubes and they are not cheap :thinks:

E6000 is an industrial strength adhesive. The manufacturer's website is offline right now, but I found a cached version of their technical data sheet. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:QOIIsE8uVtYJ:www.eclecticproducts.c om/_tds/e6000_tds.pdf+&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
Maybe you can find a European equivalent. (It smells very much like the hobby glue used on plastic car models.) Try a hardware store for bigger tubes.
Good luck!

I asked if they could not simply put the zipper in an enveloppe and their answer was:' Yes it will be shipped in an enveloppe and not as a package but we still charge the same amount." i mean...really??!! so i am not ordering from them.
Now i need to try and find another website that sells them.
I did find a manufacturer of them and i will share the link on here in case it can help others :-)
They have multiple kinds of aqua zippers for various uses:

Why don't you go to the nearest craftshop? Maybe they can help you?

It needs to be an industrial zipper that can be used in the water.
Regular zippers are not good enough for that, they may rust or just damage from the water.
Industrial zippers like that, the special kind, are not sold by craft stores.
We barely have craft stores in the area as it is. I went to 1 fabric store today and they said that they only have regular zippers in all colors and regular sizes.
No industrial zippers.
I am now writing an email to the people from the link i just shared to see if they have a list of stores they sell to.

I use normal, plastic zippers in my flukes to close it after I put my monofin it ;) No problems with them. ;)

Do industrial zipper is not for the fluke though. It is for the back of the tail to get in it.
Would normal plastic zippers work on that as well you think?
Anyone have any experience with that?

Then use the thick ones, for winter-coats ;) but not the ones that split in 2 ;)

I probably have a dumb question lol ....but donīt all zippers split in 2 when you open them? That is the whole point of a zipper right?

Zippers for coats are two separate pieces, while zippers for pants, skirts, dresses and the like actually have a small piece at the bottom connecting the two sides.

I found a "heavy duty" 18" plastic zipper at Joann Fabrics. That's working well so far in the neoprene/sequin tail I'm making. But they only came in white, black, or ivory - no colors. If anyone knows an online source for industrial plastic zippers in multiple colors, I'd love to have that info!

I did not receive an email back yet from the company about the industrial zippers :-(
No idea why, they were very quick in responding the first time.
I will probably email them again to see if they have not received my other email.
Sigh.....barely any progress in all these weeks!

One day you have weeks time and finish this tail in no time for sure!
I have the same progressproblem, first I need to find two new 6mm thick plastic sheets, and help and tiefrom my dad.
And I have an examweek with hard tests, so barely time.
But some day we both have perfect finished tails!

So i got a reply from the zipper manufacturers who told me that all i need is a zipper you can buy in any store.
So just a basic zipper, as long as i rinse it after every swim.
Does anyone have experience with regular zippers?
He called them 6 to 8 mm spiral zippers.

trust me you want a zipper that is STRONG and plastic. or it will break. you want the same zippers used in wetsuits and scuba gear. a generic zipper cannot withstand the work and pressure we as mermaids put on them.

Water polo suits have zippers! They still break though after a while. But you might be able to use a zipper off of an old waterpolo suit if you have any friends who used to play
