View Full Version : Second Tail

Okay, so my first tail is great for a first tail but I've got enough material to make a second tail. I was originally gonna do a dolphin inspired gray tail but I'm thinking maybe a sequin tail. The gray spandex I have should make a great base for the use of sequins. While covering an entire tail in sequins seems a bit ambitious for a second tail and the fact that my sewing machine may act up again I was quit surprised when looking through the treads linked in the "Tailmaking Reference Index" and found this thread... http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2452-White-sequin-latex-spandex-tail I LOVE the way Ilonka's tail turned out and how she didn't completely cover the fabric. It's beautiful and inspiring!! So now I just need to find a store either locally or online where I can buy the sequins I need. I know there is a link in several threads for ordering with Vector Enterprises but I don't need that many sequins nor can I afford that many. I have found a store online that is in my local area...just down the road from where I bought my spandex actually...and they claim to sell sequins too. So this weekend I'm gonna go check them out. I'm also going to order a polycarbonate sheet from Amazon to make a bigger fluke.
I'll try to post more updates as I go along this time.

What are your thoughts about vinyl floor mat used with spandex?

Or glitter organza.

I just got shower curtains for fringe at the end of my fluke. Haven't finished yet but I sure hope it works!

Let me know. I'm having to spread out my purchases for this next tail over several checks so it will be a slow process.

Luckily I don't need much. Just sequins, lexan & something for foot pockets. The frill is just something extra and can be added later if $$ demands it.

I'm having a very hard time finding the right size sequins. To me the sequins from Vector Enterprises (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?4242-Large-Shell-Sequins-48mm-Order-Thread-(Vector-Enterprises)&highlight=Vector) are too big at 48mm. And the Cartwright sequins (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?7426-Cartwright-s-Sequins-colour-and-durability-reference&highlight=Vector) at 12mm are too small. Cartwright does have a 22mm shell but only in 2 colors.
I've searched and searched but with absolutely no luck. Everyone that have seashell sequins only has small ones and sell them in such LARGE quantities that I'd have tons left over. One site was Pandahall.com and they have them in 2 sizes... 11mm x 12mm and 14mm x 13mm and the price is quit reasonable... you get 15000 pcs of the 11x12 for $9.70 and 11250 to 11800 pcs of the 14x13 for $11.31 and the shipping isn't bad. But again it's the tiny ones like Cartwright's BUT they don't have the hole down at the bottom.
I have found flat round paillette sequins at one of my local craft stores that are 20mm...a perfect size...in my opinion...but they don't look as realistic for scales as shell sequins do.
Anyone in need of Pink, Turquoise, Purple and Silver shell sequins and wanna split the cost with me?

I had trouble finding sequins too. So I finally just went with cartwrights even though they are small.
It's definitely taking a long time to scale the whole tail.

I decided to go with flat round sequins. They are bigger than Cartwright's shells and smaller than Vector's...no one has 20-22mm shells. I think these will still work though. Here is a pic of all the colors...top L to bottom R: bubblegum, fushia, turquoise, Lt blue, white, silver, purple & a penny for size comparison. I got them at Hobby Lobby. They are pictured on the gray spandex I'll be gluing them to.

Tester glued down. Now to draw up my new tail fluke while it dries...or maybe some crocheting.
