View Full Version : H20 or Ariel?

Hi guys :)
some of you already know that I'm planning to buy a second tail from Finfolk Productions.
I currently own a blue tail from them which is my dream tail and I love it. However, tails are like tattoos and once you start having one, you are craving for more and I would like to own a second one for more diversity. The inner fan in myself would like a rendition of two classics :
"H20 Just Add Water" the australian show
"The Little Mermaid" from Walt Disney
Obviously, a custom new fluke will have to be made but I checked with Finfolk and they loved both ideas.
There is one problem though... I don't know which one to choose! One day, I want H20, the day after it's the Ariel tail. It's a nightmare!
I can see myself wearing the two of them but I'm having a tough time making a decision so I'm interested to hear your advices.
The following images are just examples but there are, in my opinion, to the best rendition of the classics. The tail from H20 is from The Mertailor and the Ariel tail is from Merbella Studios.

I'd go for the Ariel tail. (Simply because I'm a TLM fan and green looks great with redheads ;) )
I've never been fond of the H2O tails.

I'd say an H2O tail, because I think it would suit you better with your hair color and style.:mermaid kiss:

Hard decision to make... I am really not an H2O Fan, but the tails are very nice.
I grew up with the little mermaid and so I (!) would pick the Ariel tail, of course.
But: In MY opinion he H2O one is more masculine and would look awesome on you, i think ... its really a (hard!) question of taste...
( and who is saying that you can't have both tails, one day ? ;) )

Looking at the fluke shapes, I think the H2O tail might give more propulsion than the Ariel one, if that helps somehow.

I'm pulling for the Ariel tail simply because I think Finfolk could do an awesome and unique take on it. The H2O tail doesn't leave much creative room... But a little mermaid tail does.
Also, I'm a sucker for a man in green. ;)
Echidna
08-23-2014, 05:54 PM
so you want a rendition of a staple classic tail, and both are from famous females.
Maybe for recognition? ("Oh look, ARIEL-MAN!!")
I would totally get it if you simply wanted an orange tail, or a green one.
As it is, I find it a bit confusing.
I'd go for green, but definitely with a different design for a merman lol.

I think you can have a tail based on a girls tail or a boys tail or a fish's tail or idk Ursula if you wanted to. This is a
tough call.... I would go with h2o. I think you would look better in gold. But that's just from the few pics I've seen of you :) but then again I really wanna see finfolk do Ariel..... Hmmmmm this is hard!

Yeah I totally agree, personally I would go with the H2O tail purely because I love how it looks but I think the Ariel tail looks stunning as well. If you are really stuck then just watch some episodes of H2O and the little mermaid and then decide, well that normally works for me.

To be honest, it can be hard to try and do a complete copy of a female's tail, simply because the design of the tail is normally contoured to fit a different shape on a female than a male. For example, a lot of female tails want to emphasize the curves of the legs, whereas a male's tail wouldn't focus as much on that. A lady's tail might have a sort of v shape at the waistline, but that may look a bit weird on a guy.
I love green tails personally, but I don't like the fluke on the Ariel tail you had, or how the artist rendered it. The H2O tail could look more masculine, but there are a TON of tails out there that look exactly/extremely similar to them already, if you care about originality.
I think you could do a really cool Ariel tail that has been modified slightly for a guy's physique, just be careful with the fluke: Ariel's tail is probably the hardest to do because of the floppiness and translucency of it in the movie, and, unless you are a certain someone *cough* *cough*-PearlieMae-*cough*.... it is quite difficult to get the right effect on the fluke. I would LOVE to see your rendition though!

Neither one, because I think both tail types will be associated with girls and female figures. I would go for Finfolk's Poseidon fluke!

I feel like a lot of you are really be gender exclusive towards feminine tails. Stop.
Arion can have whatever type of tail he wants.
Masculine doesn't always have to equal male and feminine doesn't always have to equate to female.

I'm going to agree with Raayvhen here.
What at does it matter if the inspiration tail was originally masculine or feminine? This kind of gender-rigidity and inability for so many people commenting here to see past that is REALLY disheartening. This community is supposed to be better than that.

Thats right. Girls can wear pants men can wear skirts and makeup if they so chose and Arion can have a tail based on whatever the hell he wants because A) gender roles are absolutely optional. B) Its not really anyone else's business. C) who's actually gonna say shit to him if he has a tail based on a mermaid's tail that he doesnt already get as a merman.
why are you all trying to undermine him? he said what he wants and he asked your opinion on one or the other. dont have anything nice to say? say nothing. plain and simple.

I really appreciate your support and for that, girls, thank you very much
Indeed, it would be kind of unfair that no man would be able to wear a H20 tail or an Ariel tail under the reason that the original characters were females. I find that kind of discriminatory. Like I previously said, Zac's tail is from the show "Mako Mermaids" and it's a different show compared to the original which was called "H20 Just Add Water". I admit his tail is beautiful and the shape of the fluke looks really nice but it would be too predictable and kind of boring that I choose this tail under the reason that I'm a guy.
I like to do things differently, it's a part of my personality. If I feel like wearing a tail worn previously by females characters, why not? Besides, like some people commented here, the H20 tail could be very masculine for me. I have confidence that whether the tail I will pick, the rendition will be great and I can send very masculine vibes to the public. I don't want this to turn into drama so it's cool. I'm not offended. Everyone is entitled to share their opinions here. I asked for that, hence the poll because I find the debate interesting. I appreciate the honesty here, I prefer much that to hypocrisy :)
Edit : Remember that the poll gives you two choice. It's either H20 or the Ariel tail. I will not change my mind from these two but thanks for any different suggestion ;)

The chimaera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimaera) is related to sharks and rays. I used them as the basis for the krana, or sea orcs, in my undersea D&D game.

Dude, that fish would make an awesome tail! Arion, I hope you did not take my other comment the wrong way. The point I was trying to make was that if you are doing one of these tails, make it your own tail, I wouldn't do a complete copy. I personally think if you aren't going to change much from the original design, the H2O tail would look super cool on you. The Ariel tail is always a bit difficult to render in silicone or latex because of the reasons I said previously, but if you did do the Ariel tail, I think it would also look awesome, but it all depends on how much of your own artistic flair you're going to put into it!

Funny, I don't see either tail as feminine.
And no offense to either tailmaker, I don't really care for either one. I don't like the unfinished look of the h2o tail, and I don't like the waistband of the Ariel tail. I'm sure they are well crafted, I just don't care for the looks.

Interesting opinion. An "unexplored territory"?
Iona was saying earlier that the Ariel tails had been done to death by fans and tail makers but we don't see many of the H20 tails.
To my knowledge, only Eric, Jesse and Mike Van Daal made renditions of the H20 tails. That's like.. three people.

I've seen like, the Merbella Ariel-tail that's silicone and really trying too look like the real thing.
With "homemade" tails i'd say it's probably 50/50, but personally I'm tired of all the H20 flukes everywhere.
There's a lot of green tails out there, but there's got to be more to it than just the color to be an ariel tail.
Again, it's my view on it, and since orange isn't one of my favourite colors that may alter my judgement... ;)
Though, the Loreena fluke looks a bit like the Arielfluke, an H20-Finfolk fluke might be a better add to their repetoir, so to speak.
Keiris
08-25-2014, 01:57 AM
It's interesting. I don't find either shape particularly masculine or feminine looking on their own. In TLM, all the merpeople are swimming together in silhouette and they all have the same shape to their tail regardless of their sex. The shape of the H20 tails is genderless. Both tails actually have MUCH less detail in them compared to some of the elaborate creations that Mike, Raven, Finfolk, Mertailor, Pearlie etc. have made especially with the addition of all the decorative fins. Arion has a very masculine appearance anyway. Neither of those shapes will look innately feminine on his body whether they are painted in greens OR goldens.

H2o- I had to think this one over the night.
The Little Mermaid /Spash tail is the traditional silicone style tail had emphases all the curve of it host. It also uses those curves to stay on.
The H2o style shows little to no shape of the legs of the host, instead allows for a different method of staying on the host.
I personally like the H2o for less heel appearence because the fin projects from the bottom, center of the foot and in my case it's more forgiving in building. Personally, I will use different scales, Merfamily here has expanded the possibilities far beyond either of those to shows.
If you like the Little Mermaid, just do it.
He's not looking into an extended neoprene tail, FYI. Finfolk doesn't make those. His tail is still going to be a silicone tail like what he has now. Arion is just asking about the colorscheme and fluke style, not the actual structure of it.
Also, other men wear silicone tails, they stay on because they are made to the wearers measurements, not because they're curvy. ;)
Meilyn
08-25-2014, 05:12 AM
Personally, I'm in love with the Loreena fluke if you couldn't tell lol.
I would go for an Ariel color scheme tail with the Loreena fluke. I freaking love that fluke! And I think it might work.
It has the same curves, but I really think it would go well with the Loreena.
23710
I think they would do a grand job with it. Simply using the loreena.
But again, I'm a Loreena fluke sloot LOL.
Merman Arion
08-25-2014, 05:17 AM
@Meilyn
I see your point but the Loreena fluke is way too spiky to my tastes to be used as a fluke for the Ariel tail. I would rather have a smoother fluke instead. And I find the end of the scales too pointed as well. Maybe I'm just being picky lol :p
Anahita
08-25-2014, 05:34 AM
I do think the Loreena is too spiked for it, but I see where she's going with the shape. Of all the mermaid flukes out there, the Loreena looks closest to TLM, I think. It's also why I think Finfolk could easily create a beautiful, wonderful, and unique recreation of TLM tails.
Ariel's tail, because it's from a cartoon, doesn't have a lot of detail, and as such, in recreating it, there's room for interpretation. I think Abby and Bryn could interpret it beautifully. The H2O fluke on the other hand... It kind of feels done to death and really, because it comes from a live-action TV show, really doesn't leave much to the artist's individual talents to take over.
Of course, this is all a matter of opinion. I could be 100% off and completely in the opposite direction of where you're thinking. I wouldn't put it past me, lol!
Sherielle
08-25-2014, 11:39 AM
I voted for the H2O tail because I also agree that Ariel is sort of cliché when it comes to mermaids.
Also, as far as men wearing mermaid tails? Balderdash.
I see it more like cosplay and some of my favorite cosplays are when they mix the genders. I have a Wolverine cosplay that I'm working for myself.

I was never a fan of the H2O tails. They were more realistic but I had thought the color scheme was not as pretty as I would have hoped for a show tailored to a younger generation of audience. I know that the Ariel tail can be seen as cliche but there are a plethora of orange tails similar to the H2O one and the one from Splash out there, and I see orange as an over-done color. The Ariel green also has a lot of creative potential as you can do a variety of greens, a variety of fins and additions, etc. You can even simply base the tail loosely off of Ariel. The same does go for an H2O style tail, too. I just see a lot more variety as an option with an Ariel tail (though I'm sure you can also do plenty with an H2O tail) and have already seen a lot of orange-colored mermaids.
