Okay, there's probably already a post like this out in the sea of this forum somewhere, but I couldn't find one while I was searching, but I did find some really interesting threads about goggles already. Here are some links to those threads: (I hope I'm allowed to link to other threads in a thread...Still new, still learning!)

Okay, those are all great threads, and a lot of them have some pretty neat designs for goggles and ideas for goggles, but I think we need more. The thing is, goggles are really important for some of us. Some of us don't need them at all, and some of us can't swim without them! And with a lot of us doing performances and whatnot, it's hard to wear plain goggles. It looks silly and completely not magical. So I think we should come up with some creative ways of being able to use goggles at gigs, designs for goggles, ways to personalize them, etc. Let's get crafty. :D

One of the things I noticed on the above threads that I really liked thinking about was the excuse. The excuse to allow us to wear goggles. When you're supposed to be a magical creature of the sea, it's kind of weird for a kid to see you in swimming goggles.

"Why are you wearing goggles? Can't you see underwater? You're a mermaid!"
"That's a great question! Do you know any people who wear glasses?"
"Yes."
"Well, some mermaids have to wear glasses, too. But we can't wear glasses like you do, or else they would fall off when I go really fast! We wear goggles, because they stay on our heads a lot easier!"

And there could be other variations to that, of course, but that's the basic idea I saw in those threads. Please post below any other ideas for "excuses" to wear goggles as a mermaid!:thumbs-up:

The next part of this thread I was hoping could be dedicated to decorating goggles and sharing our ideas! Some ideas are already in the threads above, such as the seaweed goggles, (in the Octogoggles thread), the Octogoggles, and the Masquerade Mask Goggles! These are a lot of really great ideas! I think it'd be an awesome idea to get together and show off our goggles creations!

When you're in a chlorine pool, you can just say your eyes aren't used to not being in sea water. Another thing which older (more smart-alec-y kids) might take as an excuse, is that when you are under water at an indoor pool, the rays of light of all of the lights are emphasized when you are in the water, and, if you are a deep sea mermaid, your eyes are not used to the amount of light in the water. The goggles help cut down on the glare :)

Yeah, those are really great ideas! I like the deep sea mermaid idea! That's a really good back story for super pale mers!

I'm not wearing goggles in pools because I cannot see without them, I wear them so my eyes don't get damaged by chlorine.
I don't do kid's parties, so I rarely have to deal with questions, but if you're looking for reasons children will accept and understand, by all means tell them the truth and educate them a bit.

Chlorine itself, in the right moderate amounts (even though it's pretty much a cheap substitute for healthier, more expensive desinfectants) doesn't hurt your body much, nor does it smell.

The toxic byproducts that develop when chlorine reacts with sweat, hair, perfume, make-up, and especially urine are another matter.
The gases from them damage the lungs, those inside the water are absorbed through the skin and damage your internal organs.
The smellier, the more urine has reacted with chlorine, and the unhealthier is swimming in such water (frequent exposure can lead to cancer).

I wish these facts, which have long been known and researched, would be brought to the attention of pool goers, many of which don't bother to shower, and even more who think it's ok to not use the toilets.

As a mermaid, I tried raising awareness regarding this, and found public pool facility managers completely unwilling to put up a few warning signs, probably because they're afraid to lose customers if more people learn about it.

Long story short:
tell the kids that it's better to wear goggles in chlorinated pools for both humans and mermaids.

(and actually, I'm pretty sure a waterdweller, magical or not, would quickly expire in the average chlorinated pool :p )

I wear prescription goggles because I have very high astigmatism, and do wear high powered glasses on land.

Yeah, I have extreme anemia, so I am most likely one of the palest mers out there! Who says you need to be a warm-water mermaid? :D

I bought some goggles that you can pop the lenses out and switch around the colors so I took the lenses and suction cupped them to my face. This way my hair still flows and I can see. I would recommend though for gigs to not where goggles because they take away from the whole realalistic mermaid affect.

I found this but I don't understand French and the English subtitles were covered by the Spanish subtitles!

It looks like an interesting concept. You could probably cosplay the Octonauts or some such shows...

I considered trying to make these lol you could attach them to clear goggles too to protect your eyes.

My eyes burn like crazy, even if I just happen to accidentally splash up some ocean water in my eyes (I'm running to the shore and patting my eyes down with the towel because it burns so bad), so I'd definetly be wearing mermaid-goggles to help myself if I ever wore my tail to the beach or something and it required me to go under the water o-o

I definitely want to make goggles because I love goggles. When I swim I wear contacts with goggles, and I definitely love seeing undersea life in HD! I like wearing big masks though, which isn't so pretty. I like doing colorful makeup, so the goggles would also hide my makeup or make it less noticeable so that wouldn't be fun. I don't want to hurt my eyes though and see everything all blurry. I will have to figure out something.

I searched mermaid goggles and found a person on Etsy, but I don't think their goggles are swimmable. At least their goggles could be used for good inspiration:

You could definitely do something like that on your own goggles! Just a case of gluing shells and beads on :)

oh, those look really nice!

I haven't found a glue though that stays on in chlorinated water.

Okay well I was cleaning my room today when I found an Amazon gift card, so I used it to get some goggles that I have been wanting for a while because I think they might look nice for mermaiding since they don't look as clunky as regular diving goggles.

I was thinking you could decorate the sides of the goggles with barnacles. I went for the clear silicone goggles. They should get here next week so I will keep you all updated. I have never worn a classic round diving mask, but I first found out about them by watching a show on TV about some native peoples using the antique masks to dive for clams and crustaceans. I figure it is worth trying and I hope I don't look stupid wearing it. I know that from the photos I looked up of people wearing this mask, you can certainly see their face a lot better vs. regular masks. Here is the link to the mask if you are interested: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001N17Y0Y/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Once upon a time Nike sold strapless goggles that had an adhesive pad that helped them stick to your face, but I can't seem to find them for sale anymore.

I wear contacts as I'm way to nervous to get eye surgery lest they screw up! ( though I really want surgery )
anyways goggles are a must to see , I was thinking maybe there's an excuse for goggles that can raise awareness about pollution in the ocean....like maybe some mermaids have very sensitive eyes due to being caught in an oil spill or something?! Though I don't want to scare them into nightmares either....
