Hey guys,

I've been working at an Age 55+ community swimming pool this summer, and a lot of the members bring their grandchildren. Today, two girls arrived with their grandmother, and, while playing in the shallow end, they decided to pretend to be mermaids. Since they were the only children there and the time, and their voices carried, especially over the water, I heard almost everything, even from the lifeguard chair on the other side of the pool.

She was going to be a mermaid with a blue tail that turned into a purple bathing suit (which, coincidentally, is what she was wearing) out of the water, and her sister would have a pink tail (her voice wasn't quite so loud, so it was more difficult to hear the details).

Later on, the older (and louder) girl decided that she wanted to jump off the diving board. She curved her legs and arms back in a reverse C-shape, executing a rather loud and painful-seeming belly flop. When she climbed out, I suggested that she point her legs down with her toes pointing downward "mermaid-style" and she proceeded to confess to me her "secret": that she was a mermaid. I told her: "Really? Cool! Coincidentally, I'm a Merman!" Then she asked me what color my tail was (I described my proposed future tail) and she said that she remembered seeing me at the beach (she couldn't specify which beach) one time, swimming with a killer whale. I replied "Hmm... OH! Him! Yes, he was a really nice fellow..." Then she proceeded to tell me that she had seen me once when she was in mermaid school, also, and that she had a necklace that did something (the details are fuzzy to me now) when she rubbed it and that she liked to visit her "mer-family." She also mentioned having powers (leading me to believe that she's a fan of H2O). Then she went back to the shallow end to play with her grandmother and sister again.

It's nice to see people so involved with their imagination and mermaids, I think.

That is so adorable, it gives me warm fuzzies! I think it's great that you got to participate in her game. It's rare for a kid to find an adult that speaks their language and encourages use of their imagination! She'll probably remember you too. ^-^
