View Full Version : Finding A Nude-Colored Bikini Top?

My pod enjoys making tops for our mermaids out of primarily netting, but we have yet to find any nude-colored bikini tops to make our creations waterproof. Does anyone know a good company who makes swimsuit tops in nude or flesh tones? Or perhaps a good nude-colored bra top that works in the water without breaking down? We like using Tilly's nude bandeau tops though we don't know how they will do in the water since they aren't made for swimming, and don't want to ruin our work by testing them out.

Most tops are made with nude colored bras. I've seen all sorts of bras work great. Some have issues with silicone curing but if you're not using silicone I'm sure there are a wide variety of bras that would work. Some of my tops are made from Victoria's Secret, Target, and Kohl's bras and they have held up great.

I haven't made any tops so I'm sure a more experienced mermaid could give you more detail on which brands are the best.

Thank you! We may just try out our current ones to see, then. I believe one of us has a Target bra for a base so that is reassuring. c:

I read somewhere that all bras, even the ones with cotton coverings, are made of swimsuit material. Even the underwire ones too, now have industrial plastic as the boning, (the hard, curved part of the bra that holds the cups) instead of stainless steel ones.

Mine are wires... :( But I also think mine are an extreme case, lol.

You can actually make a bathing suit top base fairly easily if you're not looking for super-shaping support. It's just three layers of fabric, the fashion spandex, the lining spandex, and the power mesh cut into a leaf-shape and attached to a band, then you put halter straps onto the tips of the "leaves" so to speak.

Mine are metal too but I SWIM IN IT ANYWAYS I DO WHAT I WANT but yeah 34DD Or 32E so maybe smaller sizes are plastic.

Thank you everyone! Someone had warned me not to use standard bra tops or bandeau tops in the pool because they wouldn't last. Glad to know this isn't necessarily the case. c: Definitely going to finish up my current top and attempt a swim to see how it holds up!

Underwire? What's that? ;)

I bought these today from my local KMart, cos I was having trouble with my underwire bras...

They're seamless and the cups are removable. And they have wide straps. There is something about having skinny straps on swimsuits that I just don't like.

Just check that the bra is a Nylon/Spandex mix and you should be fine!

...But seriously, there are tons of mer-bras - even pro-mers' bras - that have a standard bra as the base. You just have to wash/rinse them well after swimming, just like the rest of your costume :3
