No idea where to put this but I made a couple of scale sculpts the other day and since then made a few and quickly stuck them together. The first picture is how actual placoid scales sit (ones on many sharks and rays where one way is smooth and the other is like sandpaper) the second is how normal scales sit.

Not sure these would be used as a tail due to the pointy parts being at the waist (or they could, either way)

I was actually thinking of doing placoids for my tail... in the original sandpaper configuration. I think it would add another dimension to the tail, more texture, so to speak..

I love how unique the placoid scale pattern is to what most mermaids have today! It gives quite an edge. Either way you place them, they look fantastic. It's nice to see some scale variety!

Looks fintastic!
I prefer such scales.
They're more work though, maybe that's why we don't see them often.

Thank you ^_^ I too prefer this type to the more common rounder.
we need more plaoid mers...all the variety! !!!

the sandpaper configuration is quite a bit of work and can get messy (as seen with mine out of latex). But i think once a master mold/s are made then it could be as easy as any other individual scale tail.

The other configuration is what is found on most tails, I really just did it to see the difference :P.
I'll be making some bracers first and see how they go :D
