Hello! I've decided while I wait on saving money for my partial silicone tail from Mertailor, I've decided to make a sequin tail.
But I have no clue as to how many sequins I'll need! I've measured my tail from the tip of the monofin to the top of the waist on my pattern.
It measured out to be about 85 inches. The sequins I'm looking at are on eBay from china and they say are 13mm.
How many sequins do you think I would need?

Are you covering the fluke in sequins?

Okay what's the width on widest part of your fluke and the length? And same for the body?

Kay, I got everything calculated, do you want me to explain my numbers or just give you an estimate?

Okie dokie so what I did was figure each part of the tail (the fluke and body) as two rectangles. I then took the measurements you provided and converted them to mm

Body width: 18" = 458mm
Body length: 43" = 1093mm
Fluke width: 41" = 1763mm
Fluke length: 43" = 1093mm

Then calculated the area of each "rectangle"

Body Area: 500,594mm sq.
Fluke area: 1,138,906mm sq.(that's a lot of mm lol)

So the next step is to divide each rectangle by the approx. area of one sequin (13mmx13mm=169mm sq.) So you get...

500,594 mm sq. / 169mm sq. = 2,962 sequins
1,138,906mm sq. / 169mm sq. = 6,739 sequins

I rounded each number up, so you'd get about 3,000 + 7,000 = 10,000 sequins. This excess plus the portion of the "rectangles" not filled with fabric accounts for overlapping with the sequins.

So you would need approx 10,000 - 11,000 to cover your tail :) Hope that helps!

Edit: here's what I mean about extra to account for overlapping

I'm currently scaling a fabric/neoprene tail. I got about 15000 sequins and I'm not even close to making dent in my sequin supply and I've almost finished the front of the fluke. My fluke is about 38" across. The best thing to take into account is the time required to scale. Ive been scaling for months now and feel like I never get much done.

I would read the reviews on the mertailor before ordering a tail from him, not on topic I know but his customer reviews are just lacking.
