View Full Version : Suggestions on what to add to top for more coverage?

Hey everyone,

So the matching top from Finfolk for my tail is too small for me. I thought it was being re-sculpted to my specific size but that wasn't the case and the options I was offered (2 days before I needed to wear it for a photoshoot) for more coverage were not aesthetically appealing to me so had to go with what was there. I ended up having to cut the top of the bra down to where the silicone started for the photoshoot. We lost a lot of otherwise good pics where I popped out & there is no way I can wear this for public events due to how low cut it is.

Here is one of the shots we did get that will give you an idea of the shape & issue; my nipples are riiiight below the edge of the bra and I shoved them back in right before this pic:

Ideas? I don't want to put seaweed or shells there as I don't think it would look good at all.

How about adding some lace?

How about adding some lace?

I thought about adding fabric or sheer ruffly bits but I'm not sure it will look right. I don't think lace would look right at all since the top & tail looks so 'organic'.

What about a thin red/orange material or mix at the top edge? Like a chiffon to look like flames?

That was my initial thought (& what I was talking about in my reply to Crystal) but while it will look good wet I don't know about dry (floppy).

Hm! That is a dilemma. And it's such a pretty top & matches your tail so nicely, it'd be a shame not to get to use it.

Maybe if you added a nude-colored bra insert/nude material along the top edge, and then covered it with netting to hide it better/made netting shoulder straps/halter strap? Would give you more coverage, and maybe help the top from sliding down as you swim. Like, sew more material onto the bra inside so that it covers you a bit more (assuming there is a bra inside this, if there's not, then maybe you could wear a thin bra/swimsuit top below it), then netting over that & past it over the straps you already have on it. I'm not sure if that's a clear picture or not, words are hard.

Netting isn't as flashy as seaweed/shells and a nice tan/brown color wouldn't clash with your tail while still being pretty mermaid-y.

(Also I just gotta say again that I ADORE your tail :) )

the chiffon that was used on my fabric tail for the dorsal and fluke fringe looks good dry.

Ah I understand. :) Hard one.. It has indeed need to look good in the water as well on land.

Or maybe a nude colored fabric strip with some fire colored jewels on it?

I think some chiffon-type fabric might actually work if you sewed it right - I used a stretchy/floppy sheer for the sides/back of waist on my tail, ruffled/gently pleated it, and it stands out just fine! Perhaps a stiffer sheer fabric would do if you were worried about it being too floppy, like whatever is on the fluke of my tail (I don't know what it's called, I get really confused with the names of sheer fabrics since so many people use them interchangeably).

I wish I lived near you so I could just show you the random collection of firey fabrics I have, somehow I got a stash of awesome red and gold fabrics and I'm sure one (or two) would work beautifully for this if sewn right...

You could glue in some red and yellow aquarium plants.

Would you want to add seaweed maybe to the top to fill in some of the risqué parts??? I ended up sewing more netting on mine and adding seaweed!! It came out pretty cool

The Siren Tide girls use netting on the tops that Mertailor sent us (which were much too big) with pearl accents and some faux seaweed. You can also add colorful shells to the netting, but it works very well and you get quite a lot of options for how you want it to look!

Or what about nude/sheer fabric attached and used like a halter top to help to keep the top up? Again, embellished with jewels/pearls. The way your top has points lends to a natural line of a halter top.

How about some red and orange tulle, gathered, facing upward, just on the inside of the top of your decolletage? It would flow while covering nips in the water, and stand up and give coverage out of the water, too. Does that make sense?

Oooh, I think I know what you're talking about, PearlieMae! I think if you added a few sharp pleats in there, it could help it stand up more (like my side "fins")... or possibly even an extremely light iron-on interfacing, maybe? I haven't worked too much with interfacing yet.

I'm going to have to take some closer pics of the top; it's pretty 'thick' at the edges so just laying fabric behind it will be weird. Also sheer tulle and chiffon won't be enough to keep the nips in nor completely cover, need to combat that too. Will have to experiment too.

what about taking a skin colored tank top and cutting it down so its like a bandeau top and wearing it under the silicone bra top?

I bet someone who works with silicone could alter it a bit to fit better. I would actually offer to do it if I had any idea what I'm doing. I prefer not to gamble with other people's stuff.
