how many of you pro mers use tips jars? I designed a cute one out of a fish bowl, and I was wondering if I should put a little sign somewhere that says "Tips"? that isn't being too forward, I don't want to sound pushy, but I also don't want us to go un-noticed????

Use 2. And sometimes it doesn't matter how fancy they are people wont see em, lol so we put one on one end of where we sit and one of the other.
That's a good idea Raina, I would never have thought about using two tip jars!
I think tip jars are a great idea and not too pushy! You are a performer, after all, and people expect to give tips to things like street performers, so why not mermaids?

When Neptune's Keep plays music at coffee shops, we put out a tip jar. It's an acrylic goldfish bowl with an Ariel doll sitting at the bottom, reaching up. On the outside is a sign that says "Please feed the mermaid!" And we always throw a fiver in there to give people the idea.

What about a simple "Like what we do?" and then put money in the jar so that they get the idea. I don't think that's pushy :)

I haven't used a tip jar as a mermaid, but I have done shows for tips in the past. One thing I've found that works we'll is making it a competition. Have two separate jars, and say that they're for two different things. If you have two performers, say that if you like performer A best, put the tip in jar A. If you like performer B best, put the tip in jar B.
Another option would be to have two jars, one for do a thing, the other for stop doing a thing. Example, put money in a jar for singing, you sing (something annoying would be best). Someone outs money in the stop singing jar, the song ends abruptly.
These options make tipping part of your performance, but in a playful way. If the tips don't happen, you can still continue the performance. The audience usually doesn't feel like they're being pestered

Someone brought up an interesting point. Is it legal to put out tip jars if you weren't booked for a location? Say, I showed up on a beach or at a fountain. Do you need a permit beforehand? I don't really want to step on toes

Kaila, I was wondering the same thing. I can't see a reason for it not to be legal but you never know. Someone brought up that street performers have tip jars and I don't think they have booked events/locations. If you want to, try it out. The worst that could happen would be someone saying that you can't ask for tips.
And if anyone tells you that mermaids arent allowed, that' their issue. :)

It all depends on the municipality you're performing in. For example, the city where I live actively encourages buskers in certain downtown locations, as it makes the city "vibrant." However, it has to be within certain hours. In other cities anyone can do any sort of performance if it's a park, but not on streets. Most cities with subway systems require auditions to busk in them. The town where I grew up there was a full on NO BUSKING! bylaw, because busking is too much like panhandling. Check with your city hall website for details.

Like GirlChris said, it depends on the area you live.
I believe in Texas it will be under Panhandler laws. They are used to control begger and the homeless, I can't see anyone penalizing a Mermaid for raising funds for Legs. :thumbs-up:

Awesome idea!

Baiting the tip jar also helps. No one will put money in an empty tip jar. Throw a couple dollars and some change in the bottom, and others will see it and add to it— especially if your tip jar is clear!
