I don't have a mold for plain round scales, but next time I'm making a molds, I'll throw some in and we can sseeee how they turn out! :)

I will be in Stockholm for a lot of my trip, I think! My relatives live there. I'll definitely be spending Christmas with them. I was thinking of posting in the respective pod to see if any Swedish mers lived anywhere near the places I'll be staying - it'd be cool to meet new people!

Okay, so reading over this thread again, I just realized that my post looks super out of place. When reading new posts, I tend to get excited and wind up talking before I realize there's a whole other page after what I've read. So if my posts pop up really late, please forgive me! I get too eager!

I can't believe how beautiful the pearl one is. They're all beautiful, though! I think I'm the least keen on D; it's very similar to E, which I think is a nicer colour. I can't think of any colours I want to add, though :)

So I did some sketching, and...
...How many fins is too many fins? xD

http://i.imgur.com/GWTPTfZ.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/BSpMeGa.jpg

Just testing placement out, really. I don't want to be all fin. I do quite like the fins on the second one; the first is a bit too "faerie" for how I want this tail to look (though maybe it wouldn't be, with all the opal colours? Or just with fewer fins!)

I drew some massive heel fins and thought "ahaha these are too big" "no wait, these are okay..." "ahh man these are rockin~"

http://i.imgur.com/pksxQDc.jpg

I don't know how well they'd translate to real-life/swimming ability but I think they look pretty :3

I'm blocking in the clay for your fluke to get an idea of what it will look like in 3D...how do you feel about the four diamond shapes being faceted like gemstones?

Mermaid Kelda

I feel very strongly. Yes, ja, hai, si, oui.

Here's an unlisted video of the layout of your tail, Kelda, just to get an idea of the direction...it's not set in stone and can be changed any way you like. You let me know if you like it,

Also, I have more I am pinning on tonight. I would have sent it earlier, but I had to fix the laser cutter at work and it took all day!

This is in the dark room light of my living room, I will get daylight shots on the weekend. Photos to come under separate cover!

What do you think? (The dorsal side is really dark in the video, but there are a lot of colors... you'll see in the photos shortly!

Mermaid Kelda
01-30-2015, 03:39 PM
I'm not sure... I do like red in opals, but I just can't see it blending very well I suppose. Although, opals themselves don't blend well either! Could I see an example?

I adore people who just have so much patience it's unbelievable. And it's so clearly visible how that effort you have put on your own tail and on this one has been worth of everything, I mean.. It has gain the worth (sorry my english, finnish gal here.. ) even more. You know when someone has so much talent and then they push it to the limits they just make magic happen...

I've laid out the fluke in clay and I'm molding the gems separately...the flat areas of the fluke are pretty smooth and plain...did you want some texture/veining in those areas? :D

PearlieMae is the clay you use easier to work with compared to monster makers? I rarely do anything with clay, but when I do I have a bear of a time getting it to smoothen out. In fact, it doesn't smoothen out for me. :(

PearlieMae

Yes, the plastilina is wonderful! I know some people are concerned that the resin heating up will destroy the detail but I've never had a problem with it.

It's a little longer than my sketch, but I like it! Would the shorter/wider fluke in my sketch create issues with the design of the monofin? I'm not hugely fussed either way - I do want my tail to work, as well as look pretty ;)

JamesGunnels
03-11-2015, 03:17 AM
I really like Plastilina clay. My only problem with it, is that I am actually having difficulty sculpting with it. I haven't had any problems with resin effecting any of the details in my sculptures.

Remember that a portion of the top is covered by the end of the tail, and it won't affect the monofin functionality. It's going to work great! I doubt that it's anywhere near as long as the tail you currently have. :D

Okay, here's where I'm at right now.

I found this picture, and I love it:

http://i.imgur.com/Qh1IYBq.jpg?1

So I put it on my tail:

http://i.imgur.com/V3prN8k.jpg?1

I love these scale colours and I think they work as a more teal version of the above image:
http://i.imgur.com/XF3B3YQ.jpg
But I also love all of these colours:
http://i.imgur.com/ZZUBrW1.jpg?1
So I tried to isolate just the ones that would fit for the image (blues, some purple tones):
http://i.imgur.com/hnwWW2v.jpg?1
But that leaves out all of these (including the teal ones which are my favourites):
http://i.imgur.com/px0WXR9.jpg?1
Which are super beautiful and look like a galaxy on their own! I mean, look at the top 8 - they're all sparkly and fabulous and crystalline. I love them to death.

HOW DO I CHOOOOSSSEEEEE

PearlieMae

So, which ones did you eliminate completely?

Mermaid Kelda
03-17-2015, 01:05 AM
These ones circled here (not because they're not beautiful, mind you!):

28299

The yellow one with the arrow pointing to it I changed to a more beige colour in my scale layouts, because I thought I saw similar colours here, unless it's just the light (I'd really rather you don't have to pour more colours than you already have!):

Hey! Do you want me to work those teal-related scales in the back of the tail?

Mermaid Kelda
03-17-2015, 11:42 PM
If you think it will work! Honestly I'd be happy if they were included anywhere at all :) I don't mind if some scales only appear a few times - they can be like galaxies in the distance ;)
Just place them however looks best!

PearlieMae

More scales are curing, waiting to be pulled, finished and pinned, to make the transitions smoother... this is the front:

28653

If they are too purple-y, I can go more teal, instead.

The back has a few in their general areas, just to get an idea of where the colors are going to go.

28654

The colors are more intense in real life - it was early and cloudy when I shot these.

We are on the right track, then? :yay:

I was thinking about your fluke...I could do it dark, like your comp, and blend colors and glitters to look like a galaxy, with a sweeping swirl of holographic glittering stars (not literally star shaped) across it.

What do you think?
:thinks:

Wow...a lot of new scales poured and now that these are pinned into place, I am making some more to make the transitions smoother.

I grabbed a couple of shots with my phone this morning, but it was raining and the light was crap. You have to see it in the sunlight! I will post better shots in full sun, with the good camera as soon as the weather breaks!

29124

I'm going to make the fluke mold this week, the four gems on the bottom of the fluke are being cast separately and will be added, rather than cast the whole thing at once, in case they turn out to be problematic. Fins and top to follow!

Edits? Changes? Do you want the tail to be darker overall, like the galaxy shot in the comp?

Pearlie, you're fantastic. You're basically pulling off the silicone equivalent of sequin tails and you're innovative and just great. After goofing around with caulking in one of my spare molds, it's hitting me how many hours of work these art pieces take and I'm just so impressed with you. AND YOURE DOING TWO RIGHT NOW! Just wow. She's got five orders, but she isn't working on them all at the same time. There has to be an order to the orders, or I wouldn't get my tail till next year ;)

Pearlie, it looks absolutely stunning, even in the shade! I really love the pastel look, so I'm not fussed that it's lighter on the top, since the fluke will be dark also. And, since my FF tail has zero glitter, do you think I could add some to the top slime coat? :D

Next up, me figuring out what the heck I want to do about fins... And exactly what I want my top to look like xD

04-20-2015, 09:34 PM
Yes!

You wouldn't believe how much glitter is in this...I'll send closeups as soon as I get some decent light!

I have to say, I really like the direction this took, and I'm sorry it's taken so long. But if you like this colorway, the rest is going to go quickly! :yay:

I'll sculpt some fins - hip, pectoral, heel...and we can move ahead from there. I can also add rainbow holographic glitter to the top coat for extra sparkle! (I'll mail a couple of sample scales with that top coat before we commit.)

I've looked through your file and I think I'm still waiting for the tracing of your feet for your custom monofin. The polycarbonate is cut and the edges finished, I just need the tracing to add the straps.

I'm so happy you like it!

(And technically, I have six tails after yours! :fallover: )

Thanks gang!

I've been busting my tail, and mundane life has been elbowing its way into my mermaid life, so dealing with that, too, takes up a lot of time.

Fortunately, 'Pearliemaeds' have some awesome inspirations and design ideas, and making them real is my dream come true! I LOVE tailmaking!

The fins on my design are just placeholders, really. I'm still not 100% happy with them, and I want them to look a bit more "spacey" rather than "fishy" as they are now. I'm going to sketch out a bunch :)

What if I scanned it and PMed it to you? I could include the width/height measurements so if you print it out you could be sure it's correct?

Sure! No worries, that would be fine. Actually, just take a photo with your phone of the tracing and include a ruler in the shot and email it to me. Photograph it as straight on as you can. :)

I've been testing small versions of galaxy-looking configurations for your fluke (using my side fin molds), I hope to have something to show you tonight or tomorrow!

I made a new batch of scales to replace a batch (I didn't like the transition) and will pin them into place tonight and we'll see how they blend.

Any decisions on fins, yet?

I've taken video, moving through different lights, the way the colors shift is pretty cool! I can't upload it until tomorrow when I get on the computer with s reliable connection.

I was also thinking of changing the back of the tail some so there's a matching dark streak that leads down to the fluke...opinions?

Also, I've been trying that little roll you do in your signature...My chiropractor wants to thank you for helping me pay off his car. ;) (what monofin is that?)

I'm not a huge fan of vertical lines on tails (the FF girls put subtle lines down my tail and I feel like it highlights my legs) but I'd still be keen to see what you come up with. Maybe a sort of triangular line that widens closer to my fluke, and starting near my knees so it's not the whole length of the tail?

Okay, here's what I've got. I'm not decided yet, these are just ideas, so let me know what you think! I tried a few fin designs, including a copy of the fluke shape. I played around with adding crystals to the top of the fins because it seemed cool but I don't know how feasible/annoying it'd be :)

I like both of these and I can cast the crystal part separately from the fins to see how they look without committing to them.

Like this one? I like the size, but they look a bit too floppy for my taste, though that's likely because of their shape. I feel like my fin, being attached all along its length, might be more stable.
So I guess, yeah, that big!

i am gonna go ahead and just comment real quick. just looked at your profile and see this is the very first thing you have posted since being on here. this kinda comment (especially first comment) along with no description of you in your profile except that you are male can often send off red flags to this forum. it is usually best to make an introduction thread and tell the forum about yourself first, also if you wanna buy one of pearlieks masterpieces (or any silicone tail) it is probably best you go to her website or etsy, look at her prices, decide if you can pay in full or do payments, then send an email when you are ready ^^ (advice from a mer whom will someday be owning a lovely tail from her.)

Hello! I'd suggest you look at Pearlie's Etsy shop before you start bugging her about it. Payment plans are available as far as I know. Tails are expensive and take time to make. I'd suggest you introduce yourself to the forum and look into a fabric tail. MerNetwork has information about how to make your own fabric tail if it's too expensive for you to purchase.

I believe what Pearlie meant (rather than actually doubting your age) was that it's not an excuse to get things handed to you for free/ less just because you're younger. If anything it's a perfect example why you shouldn't get a silicone tail right now, as you'll likely grow out of it very quickly and it means all the time and funds will be wasted, not to mention whatever amazing piece Pealie creates will get very little use.

The number I am most concerned with is a dollar amount. I will not reduce my prices because you are very young because I will still be doing the same amount of work and using the same amount of supplies and time and effort. You're in the UK...I'm in the US.

Doesn't matter, I saw the title and that was enough to get the gist. :D

I have just now discovered that "rave bras" are a thing and that there are a lot of mermaid ones out there are most of them are exceedingly sparkly

Aren't they gorgeous? Sorry if makes me want to cut the top off my tail so I could wear them, but...tum says "really? :no-no: "

Speaking of, what do you reckon the easiness of getting into one of your tails would be with a high waist compared to a one piece?

Probably about the same...since my tails aren't as thick as most, they are easier to get on.

I made a new top that's rave bra style. I haven't worn it yet

Nope not yet. I took it with me on a trip, but I didn't end up mermaiding.

Rave bras look a lot like Bellydance bras...probably not quite as heavy duty, but pretty darn similar.
