Swim Meet Up

Any merfolk in Ca who might be interested in organizing a meet up? I keep looking up conventions, paloozas, gatherings, and I've seen them in quite a few states, but none in California. I'd be happy to get something in the works, but first would like to see if anyone is interested.

I think theres a monthly meet up but its up in long beach or someplace near LA. Try looking it up on facebook, I dont have one but I remember someone posting the page a while ago.

Honestly Ive been thinking about asking if anyone in or near San Diego where I am felt like doing anything. Ive been a little intimidated by the idea because Im a relatively new member, but Ive found a nice ymca (there are two pools One indoor and a deeper one outside) that let me swim in my tail so potentially other people could probably come too.

I'm in OC. My tail should be here in a few weeks so I've been holding back about meeting up until it's here...but I do know that some other mers have a meet in OC regularly. (:

The monthly mermaid meetup has usually been at the first of the month in OC by Newport beach. There are some other mers from San Diego, including Spotted Catfish, that I know of. There was no October meetup because the mer who ususally hosts/organizes it on Facebook, Kailani, is working the Halloween nights at an amusement park. We should be back up and meeting again Novemberish.

Wow! Had no idea there were so many of us. My silicone tail won't be finished until March, but I've got a neoprene one I'd love to break out with some other Mers!

There are lots of Cali (especially So Cal) mermaids (and mermen). We have semi-regular meet ups. Also, in June there was the Pacific Coast Mermaid Festival coinciding with the Belmont Shores Pirate Invasion. There is nothing big scheduled for 2015 yet, but I suspect there will be another smaller meetup or 2 before the end of the year.

I hear ya. I'm thinking, since most of you guys are SoCal local, and I plan on being in that area near the end of December, maybe we can find an indoor pool and throw an end of the year get together, if one isn't already planned??

That would be really cool. Unfortunately, I don't know of any indoor pools. Well there are the gyms around me but I'm not a member and I don't know their rules on monofins

Since I am car-less, it's hard for me to get anywhere out of the San Diego area unless I carpool with someone. I would love to get a meet together in SD though, Cerulean! I'm not sure if it's starting to get too cold to swim in the ocean, but I just ordered my first tail and I'm going to want to get some use out of it!

Phaylenn- unfortunately I am pretty far from the bay area (i'm in SD) but I'm sure there are some mers up in norcal so you should try to coordinate a meet with them!

I know it sounds ridiculous and silly to other people but I dont have a facebook and Im really uncomfortable with the idea of having one. If I found the correct page the 'socal mermaid club' hasnt posted an event for over a year now anyhow. I just assumed I guess that anyone interested in mermaid stuff could get by being a part of this website. Its cool, Im sure there will eventually be a small meet up in SD that I can attend.

I was the one willing to organize the San Diego one. I'm thinking, though, that if we go to the Y, don't we all need to be YMCA members? Or would we be paying to rent it? Anyone here have experience with hosting meets at YMCA locations?

I read something saying that a non-member can enter the pool as long as they're accompanied by an adult member. Not sure how accurate that is.

Congrats Sirenia! I go to college here in CA too, but I'm in the SD area as mentioned. The tail in your picture is gorgeous btw!
As for the swim meet up, I found that there's a "public pool" in La Jolla so I just shot them an email and see what their policy would be on tails. It looks like you don't have to be a member-- you could just pay per visit and it's pretty reasonable ($8 for adults age 19 and up). Is La Jolla feasible for anyone?
I am also looking into SD-area city-owned pools. It says that you may rent these out for private events or birthday parties, so maybe we could all go in on renting for a few hours if need be.

Hey everyone! After some emails to the director of the Coggan Aquatic Center I found out that they WILL let mermaids swim in the pool! I'm so excited! Haha. I assumed everyone would say no because people think it's a liability.

When is everyone free to meet up in La Jolla?

Well I need to be able to request it off of work (2 weeks notice) or ask someone to switch with me but no guarantees if it's shorter notice than that. Weekends are better for me at the moment, but in 3 or so weeks I'll be on winter break and I'll be freer.

Ok. I am doing some traveling around the end of November/early December, and then after that I have exams and then going to the east coast for Christmas. So if we can't get it in before Thanksgiving then we might have to wait til January.

Ok, so over on FB we decided on December 13th (Saturday) from 10am-whenever. (The pool closes at 3pm, so we can stay until they close, or we can just leave when everyone feels like it. Then we can go get food if people want to. There's lots of restaurants nearby in downtown La Jolla and there are some that are reasonably priced.) I will be making a FB event so if you are part of the CA pod on Facebook please join that. It will be at the Coggan Aquatic Center.

La jolla restaus as you mentioned in general are too rich for my blood so I might just head back into pacific beach area for dollar tacos at a place I like but otherwise sounds like a fun enough time. Unless Im busy that day Ill probably show up to hang out for a little while.

Its kinda funny its near the middle of the month, I was half hoping that the idea of a pre-holiday meet would get tossed around.

There are some that are pretty cheap like Puesto (mexican food with prices similar to Chipotle) but it's up to whoever attends to decide if they want to get food together or separately. :)
