View Full Version : What to do at an ADULT Halloween party?

Blaze

So I've been booked for a gig on Halloween night. At first I was told that I would be decoration in the pool (an outside heated pool on top of a skyscraper, no glass sides) for the party which was no problem, I could do that. We were just trying to decide what accessories I would wear & how long I would actually be in the pool.

Now the question has come up if I can do some sort of performance, maybe even to music? I would have ideas if it was a tank I was in but a pool where you can only see me from above?

Thoughts? Ideas?

I'm still working out the getting IN and OUT of the pool nevermind what fancy stuff to do in it! lol!

Find some spooky music, like the orchestra version of "this is halloween", maybe get orange glowing LED water balls. Wear some spooky things :D

I'm thinking syncronized swimming stuff. I'm not too sure though

Fangs and claws are good.
Performance More money $$
Then skeleton on the bottom of the pool, bodies floating. Add strobes to the roof shooting at the pool 2 or 4 speakers hidden under towels behind you and when you stretch your arms up from the water they fire the strobes with thunder.

They just have to fund the ideas. Don't be afraid to ask for at least half up front for the stuff.

You could make it look like your chained such you can't quite reach them.

bring a toy skull and knaw on it :P

For music, might I recommend "Fresh Blood" by the band Eels. You could embody a shark hunting prey.

pirates of the Caribbean 4, on stranger tides. Mermaids. soundtrack. GO!!

^Holy carp, yes. Pirate theme. Pilfer some gold coins from a skeleton at the bottom and give them to people.

If youre thinking about different types of music, Id recommend "Danse Macabre" its a really beautiful classical piece that I think would work well for a Halloween themed party.

Other than that I think everyone else had good ideas with the skeletons or having a bone nest at the bottom. Id say toss some dry ice in the pool but I dont know how good that would be for you or anyone else swimming in it.

Ah, so many great songs for a mermaid to use at an adult Halloween party come to mind. I love Genevieve's mention of Fresh Blood by The Eels. Cerulean mentioned Danse Macabre- I was also thinking 1875's Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Also, 'Something in the Water' by Legendary Shack Shakers. Which is actually about environmental crimes, but could work here. The style is considered "unique brand of Southern Gothic that is all-at-once irreverent, soulful, dangerous, and fun.'

Hmm you could interact with the guests while lip singing to a song... I'm thinking of PoTC jolly sailor bold scene. Then do some underwater tricks, maybe have a skit with a mertender dressed as a pirate fighting it out as he tries to steal you away, then underwater tricks and splash him or something.

There are tons of great ideas here.
Personally, I do a spooky act on Halloween in a black tail with fangs and claws.
If you have props like others suggested, the better!

I'd not recommend that unless you've trained it for quite a while.

It may not look like much, not even the olympic routines ("just hold up arms and legs, easy" yep I've been told that many times), but even the most basic moves take a lot of getting used to and special muscles you don't normally have.
It's a lot like ballet actually.

And I can tell you from experience, even if you are an accomplished synchro swimmer already, doing it in a tail is still very different and a LOT more exhausting and difficult.
You can even hurt yourself trying it out of the blue.

Oh I know. I was a swimmer next to the synchro practice for years. It's intense. I meant something synchro-esc nothing crazy

Well, my fall back plan is always to splash people and swim away. Maybe throw glitter at them. Glitter covers a multitude of sins.

To get a Halloween-y feel, maybe wrap some of those fake cobwebs in your hair or like a sash around your waist? You can put spiders or you can do like little crabs (like spider crabs lol). If the client wants more spooky, you can always try the zombie mer thing...fake barnacles are pretty rad.

Do you have an assistant/ merwrangler? If that's the case, I have a pretty cool idea if he doesn't mind getting wet. For a more spooky feel, you can go the route of mermaids luring sailors to their deaths. You can get some eerie singing (no words, just a tune), and have your wrangler dress like a sailor get lured to the edge of the pool. He sees you, you're gorgeous and he falls in love or whatever. he hangs by the edge of the pool, the singing goes on, and you start to swim towards the other edge of the pool. He jumps in to follow, swims up to you and then you smile maniacally and push him under. End scene.

Keep in mind I'm just spit balling here. I find that if someone suggests something you hate, it helps you find what you want. Also I love this stuff. And congrats on a cool gig!

How can you synchro-swim with only one person? You need someone to synchronize with. Otherwise, it's water ballet, correct?

In any case, I hope Blaze will let us all know what she ended up doing at the party.

Waterballet is just another word for synchro swimming, which was more used decades back during the time of the aquatic musicals.
There are solo synchro routines, although there are not an olympic discipline.
When solo, it means you are synchronized with the music rather than other swimmers.

I don't like the terminology much either.
I think instead of synchro swimming, it should be water ballet, which can be done solo or in numbers.
Just like normal ballet isn't called "synchro dancing", when the corps de ballet performs everything in unison :p

Hey everyone,

Just to update a bit. This party is *really* fancy rather than 'spooky' or funny, think masquerade ball in Labyrinth (not so much the costumes but more the atmosphere, well who knows what people will show up in! Think also about Labyrinth of Jareth or FairieCon balls). Going to have some music (I'm currently hooked on 'Sarah's Theme' from Hocus pocus as I just watched it again, it's my fav halloween movie and its a pretty, flowy & short song) and swim a little bit and 'lure' the other pretty girls (working with me, there is a LOT of 'set decoration' for this event) into the pool with me. :)

Still working on getting in and out of the pool, the organizer missed the (multiple) email(s) I sent in regards to me not being able to move lol.

what about wearing a string of pearls and surrounding yourself with fake oysters? you could also wear a mask yourself but take it off when swimming.

If you are exquisite "set decoration", then baby, just swim around and be gorgeous! (Lots of floating and backstroke ;) )

Swim up and sit on the steps in the shallow end (assuming) and give patrons fake palm readings, all the while tugging them gently towards the water. Dunk the ones who deserve it.

:D

Not looking for ideas on props & that sort of thing, that all is already decided at this point. :) Was looking for things to physically do in the water that would look good when viewed from people standing around the pool. ;)

Lol!

could also do a quick read-up on hand lines and do real palm readings, btw.

Otherwise, just stay near the surface.
Underwater tricks won't be seen unless someone jumps in the water.

LOL, that was my whole point of asking ideas on what to do. :D Ideas on stuff that look good from above. :) Just need a few minutes of that then will be set decoration and just swimming & being pretty the rest of the time. :)

The client wants me in the pool being a mermaid to music for at least a few minutes; that's what they want to pay for so that is what they will get. The already have other elegant and lovely 'set decorations' to serve. :)

Do you know what music/song?
It will be difficult to plan something otherwise.

If you know the music number, make a small, easy swimming choreography matching the upbeats, tempo, style and so on.
Add in some gestures, acting, and pointed glances.
It's helpful to practice that at least once before the actual event.

Good luck! :)

I'd go for something flowy, that's pace is manageable in the water.
A Whole New World, Peabo Bryson

Though it was used in Aladdin it lyrics and melody would be nice and upscale.
Halloween? Maybe not. What's the inner mermaid telling you?

We did something simliar to this a few weeks ago at a party at a pool, some guests could see into the water, and so underwater twists or coming up and twisting back down got some smiles, swimming on your side so they can get full glances of your fins. Leisurely swim, fin slaps, and a breach or two are always fun.

Blaze
10-27-2014, 05:07 PM
Update with more info from the coordinator; my 'performance' will be at midnight so they want something fun & upbeat for music. :p I see lots of fin slaps and splashes in my future (they want me to encourage people to get in the pool with me which is why the other girls will be getting in as well).

Fin slap the water with your fluke, swim sideways so only your side fins are showing, if you are strong enough or the pool is medium depth, jump out of the water and land on your back like whale breach.

LOL I'd rather them not think of whales while I am in the water. ;)

10-28-2014, 10:38 AM
^^also, this move can lead to
a) broken monofin
b) hurt lower back

and most pools aren't deep enough for a serious try either.

Well who else taught whales and dolphins to leap out of the water and do tricks?

Miyu
10-29-2014, 04:08 AM
I think a few quick twists thrown in here and there in the routine would be lovely - most people can't even think of swimming in a monofin, so that quick twist from facing-down to facing-up and vice-versa looks really impressive to most, from any angle!

I would also love some footage of this epic party if possible, it sounds freaking amazing! You go, mer-girl!

Lurk in the water, grab their ankles and go "RAAAWWRRR!"

Do the last two at the same time.

I have noticed that my Loreena fluke can do some really gorgeous things when I am in the shallower end of the pool. I can sort of flick the very tips of the fluke out of the water and it is really quite nice. And when I sort of turn my body over in the water the fluke looks really lovely at i flicks over with me. So they are a couple of things that look really nice from above.
Also maybe some hair primping and disney arms and hands.
Have you got the competitor fin in your tail? It makes it really hard to move around in small spaces and do tricks in smaller pools doesn't it!
Oh and I was sat in some really shallow water the other day swishing my fluke from side to side from the ankles instead of my knees (so like a pendulum almost). Looked kinda cool too.

Blaze
10-29-2014, 08:43 AM
I have the trainer in mine & I as well have played with the tip flicks and flips. :D It's a large hotel pool so space won't be an issue at all.

The party organizer sent over a few songs she suggested for me to swim to that fit the rest of the music for the party and this is the one I went with:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNLK_4i6Cu4

Completely different that what I was thinking but at least it's a waltz so I will be able to work it. :)

Blaze
10-30-2014, 05:01 PM
Welp. After all that I'm not going to even be getting in the water. lol! Apparently temps have dropped and the forecast is for flurries and rain tomorrow night at a balmy 37 degrees. O_o

So I'm going to be going a few burlesque bits (swing prettily from a glitter ceiling swing, splash in a bathtub near a gin bar, dance with a band) and then eventually be brought out in my tail and hang out in a oversize bathtub full of lily blooms.

Well, at least I won't have to re-color my hair again after now. ;)
