Hi there,

I'm so sorry if this has been asked before! I'm new here, and trying to find my way around.

I've been debating on getting a monofin just to try out, though I'm not fully sure if I want to yet. I was wondering though, are monofins allowed to be used in public pools? My mom suggested they may not be, which would limit things a lot, even if I felt super shy with everyone around. (Part of the reason I'm unsure is due to anxiety with being the center of attention, so a monofin would be tough!) At least, I'd have to wait until before summer to buy one so it doesn't sit waiting all this time.

I'd guess it depends on the pool itself, but I wouldn't expect them to have a rule available about monofins, I wouldn't think it'd come up that often.

Call your local pools and ask them. That's what I did, and I'm sure other mers did too. If they say yes to a monofin, then ask them if you can bring your tail to swim in. I've only had one pool that said no to either, so if you ring around, chances are, some will say yes.

One that said no, was because they did a risk management thing and don't allow any kind of fins or flippers. I suppose that's fair because if you were a regular swimmer, you don't want to chance being hit by someone else's fins.

Thank you very much! I was unsure if it was something you could just ask, since I don't think it's really all that common they'd be asked, except for regular flippers. I'll make sure to ask around while I debate on getting one.

usually if there is a no fins rule it applies to monofins

Typically, but unusually enough it's still worth a shot...my local YMCA has a strict "fins only in the lap lane" rule but a little girl showed up with a FinFun tail and monofin one day and they had no problem with her swimming in it.

Hi there,

Did you do a search first? The search field will bring up several threads on this subject- if you search on YMCA, monofins, pools, etc.

And your answer will be different everywhere- every pool has their own rules.
