Yesterday I was given a challenge from the mother of the kids I babysit, a mermaid tail for her 6 year old daughter that was done by Monday for her birthday. Since she knew I was extremely crafty (I've made the little girl tutus, custom shoes, and even matching pillowcases for us!), she proposed an idea, I'd have a $50 budget, whatever is left over I'd get to keep, and she'd pay me another $50 for making it. But completely making a tail in a day? That was categorized under 'Probably impossible' in my book, let alone two tails! Her mom already had the monofin which her daughter loves, so all she had to do was give me her measurements, and the money to make it. This morning I went to Hancock Fabrics for the first time ever (Like a kid in a candy store- I was in awe) and scoped out their swim/dance wear material, not as big of a selection as we'd all hope because most was extremely seethrough, but I still had a hard time choosing what shade of purple to pick. I found this holographic pink/purple and grabbed it immediately because it was the same color of the girl's walls. And lucky me, all spandex "Halloween" fabric was half off, and I only spent $20! I went home and started making the tiny pattern and realized I had gotten way too much, so I made a pattern of my body and decided if I finished early I'd make myself a tail also. I finished hers in 3 hours. So around 3 I traced my pattern onto the fabric, cut it out, and got prepared to sew a much larger tail. I got about 6 stitches in until my sewing machine quit on me. I decided if I wanted to make a new tail for Halloween I'd have to do it by hand. And I did. Now, with it being 10 minutes to 11pm, I spent 7 hours working on my tail. (I took an hour break because I was poking myself too much and took my dog for a walk.) The only thing I have to do before halloween is put velcro at the bottom of my fluke so I can easily remove the monofin, but that'll be easy! Here's my final product for the night, I'd post a picture of the littler one, but it's all wrapped up and outside her bedroom for her 6th birthday! It was one wild ride today, now I'm exhausted.
