I'm not sure yet, though it would be nice to see how some my homemade tails look with a digital print on them.

That'd be neat. I voted for the Northern Lights tail, but it looks like it won't have a chance, as this is basically a "who's the most popular on FB"-contest :(

I honestly don't understand why they don't take custom orders, everyone has one of the same 3 colours.

what bothers me a lot is the image they're using to promote it looks like an exact copy of my mermaid nessie's tail, and I know she would be heart broken if they mass produced her design (especially without her permission). I am hoping it's just an image they're using to advertise, and dont intend on making a bunch of tails.

They use a machine to screen print their own fabric and it's pre-programmed to the set designs. It's quite difficult to re=program a new one and would cause many issues if having to constantly program in a new one. (I asked years ago)

Raina, I can definitely see the similarities between the tails. No wonder it looked familiar. But there are a fair amount of differences in the fluke. I think they were just going for a bright and colorful tail to show off the color scheme options?

to me it's just too similar. It's one thing when someone gets a single tail that looks like someone else's original creation (Nessie didn't just design it, she made it) but this company aims to mass produce. So I certainly hope they don't do that.

In all honesty, it was rather upsetting seeing this. I've got a pretty unique looking tail, personally I think it's way too hard to "accidentally" copy something that looks so different. Definitely feeling a little ripped off right now. I'd hope that it is just a drawing and they aren't mass producing this tail.

I definitely see the differences, but at least your fluke is a LOT different from the image! I love your tail so much, and I truly believe it was probably made to use as an example. Hope for the best!

I wasn't even thinking of complicate custom designs.
Just a few more different colours maybe, as MTs are so popular, you see them all over the world.

There are no green tails (what they have as "green" is more another yellow with a slightly green tint), no red, no white, no black.

I'm not sure if they copied Nessie's tail with that logo picture.
The fluke is clearly different; it's basically a "photoshop doodle" example, using the colours of the rainbow (in the exact order) from the inside out.
I admit the tail body similarity is harder to explain.
It's not out of the question they came up with it on their own though, because- it happens that people in different part of the world who know nothing of each other come up with exact the same idea.

I think that logo is a placeholder, not an actual design.

This is the thing that has always bothered me with any art/design contest. 99% of the time, they run these things to get free designs to exploit for their own profit.

Why give away your designs? Even if you don't win, they still own your intellectual property and you gave it to them freely.

I don't think that's ok, unless they mean with "may be printed on bathing suits" that they plan to choose several designs for tail mass production.
And even so, it's a cheap way to get designs (give away 3 free tails and get dozens of designs they never need to pay anyone for).

true but it's pretty standard for design contests. I've been on DA 11 years and they partner with loads of groups for design contests and it happens all the time :(

I have to agree, I don't think they look all that much alike. The body portion is similar, the fluke not at all.

And yeah... nice way to get free designs, I hope everyone is reading all the terms and conditions of entry.

Minus that caveat, it's a neat idea. Not being able to create loads of tails myself, I think it would be kind of cool to see something I created available to everybody.

And it's not even uncommon for design or other creative contests to have that caveat. But someone always will be surprised.

While I see the differences between the tail in the contest and Nessie's tail, I don't blame Nessie for being upset. Tails are a very personal thing, especially if you both design and make them yourself. The coloring in the body is rather unique; I can see why Nessie would be upset.

There are several there that are based off pro tail makers customer designs. Is that allowed?

I don't know who owns what, so I couldn't add names to tails. After looking at all the entries, I thought most of the tails in the contest look a lot like what I've already seen here.

Unless said tail owners entered the competition to share their beloved tail designs?

I think it should be against the rules for anyone to post a design that's not made on the template that Magictail gave them. I see a lot of pictures of other people's silicone tails, random pictures from Google, and templates for other tails, such as Merbellas and Finfolk templates. It seems fairly obvious to me that a lot of these were stolen. The girl who posted the Neverland tail really upsets me--not only did she steal someone else's design, she didn't even draw it out--just posted a photo of the other person's tail, and then to make it worse she claimed that she and her friend came up with it after watching Peter Pan!

It clearly states in the rules that any tail that is based on an existing design will not be accepted. They might be able to upload their entry, because that's all automated, but they can't win.

And Idc if I get blocked too. I never heard a reply after I inquired about my very short and small size purple Magictail. They're not tails I tell curious parents about. I always tell them about the merfins and Fin Fun instead!

I don´t think so. Her clownfish tail design has also been copied. Twice. One of these designs was supposed to be drawn by an 8 year old girl. LOL! How stupid do they think people are? It´s so sad that people don´t come up with own ideas and designs :-(

This is what I take issue with. Mass producing someone else's design. A rip off of a rip off. If it was other mediums they'd have to pay a licensing fee to original creators. But this community doesn't seem to think copying matters ( according to the other thread) but I think that is only true until something like this happens to you. All well and good to be open to others having a tail like yours but I am surprised it doesn't piss people off that entries are literally being ripped from other artists and submitted for the chance of being mass produced. If mertailor did this people would be losing their minds.

Cool! I read that they're only printing 3 of her tails.

I must have misread it the first time as I thought they were going to mass produce that tail and was looking forward to buying a realistic fish tail.

All the designs are still up on the Magictail site.

They took every single entry, removed the designer's watermark, put their own watermark on it ("Copyright by Magictail"), left the tail descriptions in but removed the author's name.
Instead, they put in "Author: Magictail GmbH"

This bothers me a lot.
It's one thing to say they have all the rights to the designs now, but why remove even the names of those who sent in the designs?

It seems they are now going to sell them. "Check in February" was what she said. Whether its Feb 2015 or 2016, I don't know. That was all the info she was willing to give me.
