I want to share with you a story and a lesson that I believe all merfolk should be aware of. Created by request and with permission of Brianna L.
Brianna was 16 years old. She was a mermaid enthusiast who owned a Foxmoon tail and decided to turn her hobby into a job doing events and parties such as her role model Hannah Frasier. One day she decided go to the beach and busk for money as a mermaid. There happened to be a news crew trolling the beach searching for stories- they approached her and asked if they could do a human interest piece on her. She was so exited thinking that she'd be just like Hannah- on the news being respected for her mermaid hobby/career- that she signed the release without reading it fully, and they began filming. Brianna had kept her cellphone in the chest of her costume and it fell out while she was getting off of the rock she had been sitting on- she asked them to cut that part out since it was embarrasing. The crew pressured her to sing- she wasn't prepared to but she caved and did anyway. They seemed nice enough about the whole thing, and assured her they'd cut the parts out that she requested. Then the piece aired.
As you can see, instead of respecting her wishes for the cuts, the takes were left in. The news report presented the story as showing her as some kind of sideshow/freak/nutjob instead of in a respected way as she thought. Even the newscasters at the end made fun of her. After it aired everything hit the fan.
Kids from her high school saw the story and put it up on YouTube for further ridicule. It circulated, and she was teased mercilessly at school, often sending her home in tears. Even the teachers made fun of her at times. To them it was all, "Ok, becuase the news casters laughed at the end" and people told her she should, "have a sense of humor" because, "it was clearly meant to be a joke"- which it wasn't. All she had wanted was to do what she saw other respected people doing, and instead she was completely ridiculed. The teasing eventually got so bad she decided to move to another school. However, the reception from the teachers was the same. She was met with comments like, "Oh my gosh, I saw you on Global. That was hilarious!" and, "Oh my God, you're mermaid girl, haha". Since it was her 2nd school she decided to stick it out the best she could, but the teasing never really ended.
Recently she has moved from her home in Canada to Orlando, FL to go to work for Disney. Before she even arrived one of her co workers had googled her name and found the video, then proceeded to post it to his profile for all her future co workers to see. She was judged and ridiculed before she even arrived for the job. Because of that video her job is now endangered- most of her coworkers won't be associated with her becuase they think she's a "freak".
Brianna now taking legal counsel to sue Global TV for psychological damage- 4+ years of endless ridicule and job endangerment. Since she was a minor at the time it was illegal for Global TV to enter a legally binding contract with her.
I hope this teaches a lesson to all the merfolk out there, young and old. Don't expect respect from the media- they can skew a story to any angle they want, and you never know what the consequences may be. Be careful, be mindful- especially with the press/media!

Good, I hope the lawsuit works out and she gets compensated. The media really sucks these days and not just because they're jerks. I mean come on. More coverage on Charlie Sheen than the tsunami? What is this?

Saw the video, realized I know her, feel really really bad for the shit she's been through. Brianna's an awesome girl. I'm stunned that this happened to her and sad that she still has to deal with the reprecussions of it. :(

That is such bad karma, taking advantage of a teenage girl for the sake of "news"...I also find it weird that they felt this was interesting enough to broadcast rather than, say, actual news.

God, she's just a teenager! This is absolutely disgusting!
My outrage for this doesn't even have to do with the whole mermaid thing. What the fuck made them think that taking time out of a news broadcast to tease a random kid was a good idea? If they wanted to just bully a teenager they could have saved time by doing a story at the local high school on who sits by themselves.

Wow - I really hope she has a good lawyer because they can get that scumbag news channel for alot of damage! She definitely wasn't old enough for them to be able to use her image at all without parental consent - which is a HUGE deal! I mean photographers have to get waivers signed for all minors who appear in their photos.... Kids have their faces blanked out on news casts all the time because their parents don't approve. Man - that is just disgusting....

Actually, Global BC does one human interest story a night, so this wasn't really out of the ordinary. This piece just happened to be far more condescending and "silly" than the others =/

We are in the process of getting everything together. The fact that they still haven't taken down the video after a "Cease and Desist" letter was sent is more than enough ammo.

Problem is, I believe the official consent thing for Canada is age 16, which was how old I was.
Doesn't make it right, but still =/
Anyways, I'm probably self terming myself at Disney. The environment is just not healthy =(

This was one of the first videos I saw when I first joined the mermaid community. I cried because I was the same age as her. Brianna, I am so sorry for everything that has happened to you and I pray to god that those bastards gets what's coming. Though I'm sure that there's not enough money to compensate what they've done to you. My heart goes out to you. You are a strong woman.

The person is arguing that he has her permission, so she needs to take that permission back and ask him to remove it. That way he doesn't have that excuse anymore.

I like Brianna so much because she is a really a great mermaid and she is cute, but the problem is with video I watch couple of times of this video and this video sucks and it has bad interview, so I really want to delete this video, but someone has really control of it and it cannot delete it. As a teacher I am VERY paranoid about media slants etc. The woman who interviewed me used to be a teacher and was very respectful when we ventured into certain areas I was not allowed to comment on. The pieces have yet to air because I'm still working with them back and forth and haven't signed anything.
It certainly is a hard lesson to learn and my heart breaks for her. I couldnt even watch the whole thing, the anchors condescending voice drives me.
I have found for my own sanity you really need to create your philosophy of mermaiding and know it off your heart. It helps you answer difficult questions, decide what activities to take part in, and just generally grow as a person. You also have to seriously control how you present things and context. I really hope she does sue them, it's difficult to go up against a cooperation like that but if she took her story to other broadcasters they'd leap at the chance to undermine their competition.
We are in the process of getting everything together. The fact that they still haven't taken down the video after a "Cease and Desist" letter was sent is more than enough ammo.
and I do have a good lawyer.

This was one of the first videos I saw when I first joined the mermaid community. I cried because I was the same age as her. Brianna, I am so sorry for everything that has happened to you and I pray to god that those bastards gets what's coming. Though I'm sure that there's not enough money to compensate what they've done to you. My heart goes out to you. You are a strong woman.

I'm so sorry that was one of the first videos you saw. I think without this hoopla, I might have been able to get this business up and running.
But the bad news is is that I don't think we can sue because it happened more than 2 years ago..

Perhaps Briana can claim copyright on it. If she can successfully do so YouTube will take it down- http://www.youtube.com/t/copyright_owners . The person is arguing that he has her permission, so she needs to take that permission back and ask him to remove it. That way he doesn't have that excuse anymore.

I like Brianna so much because she is a really a great mermaid and she is cute, but the problem is with video I watch couple of times of this video and this video sucks and it has bad interview, so I really want to delete this video, but someone has really control of it and it cannot delete it. I hope that the youtube or FB developers will delete this video. Oh by the way Winged Mermaid you wrote becuase wrong, so it be the right word is because.
