This is the first thread I've started, and I've been here since 2012!
I'm a late bloomer.
I recently made a mermaid tail key ring/chain out of resin, just for fun or to make multiple to sell or give away.
Here is the process I took ... I hope it's interesting and maybe inspiring to those who are nervous to work with clay/silicone/resins ... it's a small project but it was a lot of fun!
First, I made a simple tail sculpt out of Monster Clay ...
25262
Then I secured it in a McDonalds cup and marked where I would later cut into the cup (the middle part of the tail, not the edge).....
25265
Then I poured in MoldStar30 silicone from Smooth On .....
25266
Once it was set, removed the cup and cut in a wavy pattern carefully until I could remove the clay tail (my daughter pulling it apart for the photo) ...
25267
Then I mixed up some inexpensive polyester casting resin, and tinted it purple and poured it in ...
25268
After the recommended curing time it came out like this ...
25269
I made another one, this time putting in a keychain while the resin was still wet, and then painted it :-) ....
25271
I've been experimenting with getting scale texture and better fluke painting ... I wish I put more detail into the original sculpt, but over all I'm happy with how it turned out!
