Hello Mers,:)
I'm going to take the challenge of making my first silicone mermaid tail.
Anyway, I'm not sure how much dragon skin silicone I will need?
I want my fluke to be as big as Iona (http://mernetwork.com/index/member.php?2-Winged-Mermaid)'s or Mermaid Jessica (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?6373-Jessica-s-Second-Dragonskin-Tail/page5)'s flukes (for example.)
I'm 5'7 (still growing) but very slim.

Do you think 1 Gallon of dragon skin suffices?

Have a nice day :mermaid kiss:

I had the same question a while back :) I asked a couple of mers and they told me once you have your fluke and scale mold made, you can water into them, a cup at a time. Keep track of how many cups it takes to fill the mold. You can then use that information to calculate how much silicone you'll need. However, keep in mind that you might have to double the amount for your scale mold if you are going to be using 2 scale sheets for your tail.

Good luck :D

Mermaid Jessica made my tail and she said she used about 1 order of dragon skin plus a little more for painting. One order of dragon skin silicone is 2 gallons. I think a lot of it depends on your size as well. Mermaid Jessica and I are 5'5"ish so you would probably need a little more than us. I would buy two orders (four gallons) of silicone for my first tail if I were you. This way you have extra for other fins, mistakes, etc.

Thank you so much. I LOVE your tail, it's one of my inspos :swoon:
Okay, I guess I really need to buy two Gallon orders :)

Cascada, Yeah I heard of that before but I think I need to order 2 gallon orders so I don't end up having a half finished tail

Thanks! Jessica did an amazing job. You can always order one to start and another later if you want. That might be a little easier on the wallet too. Silicone is so expensive! :gah:

Yes mermaid Eva is right it's better to consider also that you may make some mistakes and you could be in need to replace all the materials.
It's better to consider everything ;)
